Countries and bosses

Or, well, not exactly.

What I'm wondering, because I had I brilliant and mildly weird idea, and it's in the middle of the night, and I got kind of caught up in it, IS: ... or wait, no. Not a question because I'm too tired to get my brain around that.

Example instead: Prussia obsesses over Frederick the Great, and then there's France and Jeanne d'Arc, and aha, I knew my mind would catch up: do any of the other nations have bosses or just someone of their people that they can't forget, or are really obsessed with, or have conflicted feelings about? Like Russia and the Romanovs.

Who do you think they are? It doesn't have to be one person, can be many, and it doesn't have too be a person that the nation has only positive memories of, right? Just someone they remember and can't forget about.

That being said, I can't help but feel that Sweden is a massive Gustav Adolf fanboy. Of course he is.

But what do you think?

Speaking about Ita-chan, I suppose he could be negatively obsessed by both Mussolini and the idiot who now rules the Country.

[identity profile] jjblue1.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We've had so many idiots or worse ruling the country I don't really feel this one sign out in particular so as to become Ita-chan's obsession. I'll bet Ita-chan would act the same with all the bosses he had.
But I've a hard time picturing Italy as obsessed with a boss. We're too prone criticizing our bosses to be obsessed by them.
Even Mussolini had a large bunch of people who didn't like him but he was the boss and everyone had to bow to him or face consequences.

In my headcanon I picture him as fond of the fathers of the fatherland just because they can be considered his dads of some sort but even them weren't that loved.

We're just no boss-fanboys.

No, you definitely aren't the only one who sees England's and Elizabeth I's relationship that way - she even proclaimed that she was married to the Kingdom of England once, so it'd be historically accurate too.

- China: Torn about Mao. Hated Cixi. Liked Pu Yi at first, but NEVER forgave him for what he did in Manchukuo.
- Japan: Doubtful about Meiji at first, but grew to respect him. He also coined the "Rozen Asou" nickname for Taro Asou as soon as he found out he was a Rozen Maiden fan.
- Hungary: Absolute BFF's with Sissi, St. Istvan fangirl.
- England: Loved Elizabeth I a lot, of course. Also very devoted to Queen Victoria. Snarks about the actual Prince of Wales.
- France: Richelieu's favorite counselor. Also quite tight with Louis XIV.
- Spain: Will NEVER forgive Franco. Totally adores Juan Carlos.
- Germany: Ludwig Erhard is probably one of his favorite bosses. Also fond of Helmut Kohl.
- Egypt: Still mourns over Anwar El Sadat.

America hero worships Washington. He had a really baaaad crush on JFK, and was understandably heartbroken when he died. FDR was like a father to him, but he was kind of in love with Teddy.

Poland/Kościuszko FTW. Those brave, noble, patriotic types are totally fab, right?

My head canon says Russia lost his virginity to Catherine the Great. He actually did love her, even if she wasn't very nice to the peasants. Some times he'd try to talk to her seriously about, and she's invite into into her bedroom for a 'meeting'...and he'd forget what he wanted to say to her.

What else...I think France loved Robespierre until he realized that he was crazy fucker.

I'd like to think that Poland has a tragic thing for Emilia Plater, but I'm not 100% sold on this.

Heine for Germany, as some sort of childhood idol. Or maybe Börne (Börne is not so well known now, but he was important when Germany first tried becoming a nation in a not-fucked-up way).

Nowait, Ryti and Mannerheim. And we have a soft spot for Alexander II Nikolaevich who probably counts because at that time Finland was still a Grand Duchy instead of an independent country.

I would think Russia's insanity came from when he saw Ivan the Terrible kill his son and the only logical heir to the throne and with an instrument usually found in fireplaces haha. http://tars.rollins.edu/Foreign_Lang/Russian/repin2.jpg A painter's idea of what Ivan the terrible must have felt. I forget her name and I truly regret it because she is an amazing artist. Although they aren't bosses I also believe Alexei Romanov would have been a friend to Russia and I believe he feared Rasputin. XD

Like most Americans who I find to be blinded by many politicians, I think America would have loved everyone of his bosses good or bad. He probably was blind to them.

Maybe Austria and Hungary are still saddened by Franz Ferdinand's assassination.

Not a character with a face in APH yet, but:

The Netherlands (Holland-kun?) is still obsessed by Willem van Oranje, the guy who saved 'us' from Spain (only to claim the country for him and his descendants, who are still ruling the country, lol). Our national anthem is about him, so whenever some important (sports-) event happens, we are reminded of him. During special days or to cheer our national teams up, we wear the colour orange.

[identity profile] sexyhorny.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Russia seems definitely affected by all the lunatic Tzarz they had, especially Ivan the terrible. But, to be honest, he is very Communist influenced looking too. Probably Lenin and Stalin affected him just as much as Ivan the Terrible did. In Hetalia a country is an Immortal(or almost that) person representing a nation, considering Russia lived for over 1000 years in a very troubled environment you can't blame him for being a little "strange". Despite all what has befallen Russia, his face looks surprisingly calm and kind(most of the time ;D).

[identity profile] whitesin.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Looking sane has nothing to do with acting sane... sometimes it means you've already gone all the way around the bend.

[identity profile] whitesin.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think Spain was absolutely in love with Isabella I. He liked Ferdinand well enough but he loved Isabella the most (but never acted on his love for her save for almost terrifying devotion). So he's always been superbly pissed off at Austria and England for not treating his beloved Isabella's children right (Juana la Loca and Katherine of Aragon, who were married off to the respective kings).

Russia probably had whirlwind romances and relationships in general starting from Peter the Great, his daughter Empress Elizabeth and ending with Empress Catherine the Great. Let's not talk about psychotic Empress Anne... x.x

Korea was probably very, very fond of King Sejong the Great and his mother (the kingdom of Silla) probably had a lot of affection for Queen Sondok (A fascinating figure in history and one of the earliest female monarchs to rule in her own right in Eas Asia).

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree on Isabel I. She was hardcore.

Since you asked, I'll repost what I posted in the latest headcanon thread:

Finland
- was totally bros with John III back when he was the duke of Finland (John was only 18 when he first came to Finland, and they did all kinds of boy stuff together)
- had a distant crush on Catherine Jagiellon
- felt like an honorary uncle to Sigismund (son of the two above people btw.), even after he was dethroned - cue conflicted feelings
- had a mutually tsundere relationship with Per Brahe, but deep down they cared a lot for each other
- fanboyed Alexander II so much it was like an infatuation (and borderline embarrassing for Alexander)
- was somewhat scared of Urho Kekkonen, but also completely emotionally dependent on him

Sweden
- thought Gustav Vasa was one scary guy, but he also made Sweden feel strong, so he clinged to him
- was slowly going nuts even himself when ruled by the crazy king Eric XIV
- had such a boycrush on Gustav II Adolf it's not even funny except it is. And never got over it.
- hated Gustav III's fashion sense. With passion. (Because Gustav forced him to follow it.) And felt iffy about the guy's dictatorial rule as well, up until the Anjala conspiracy, when he felt Finland was going simply too far and took Gustav's side.
- saw Per Albin Hansson as a kind father figure
- won't be quite over Olof Palme's death for a long time

Russia
- was scared shitless of Ivan the Terrible, but also thought Ivan was his only guarantee of safety, and tried to be tough to make him happy. Ivan's reign was the point when he seriously started going insane. He still sometimes hears Ivan's voice talking to him, or thinks he does.
- a bit like that with Stalin, too
- admired Peter the Great a lot but wished he didn't make him cosplay Holland and move his capital around... (but he didn't dare to do anything oppose him, though Peter's new ideas drove him nuts sometimes, in that less scary way)

It's like everybody has someone in their history who scared them but kept them safe from outer enemies... and they had a screwed up relationship to that person.

as for they bosses -

I guess Germany should like Otto von Bismarck since he united him and actually made him a country...

and I think Japan would like emperor Meiji since he kind of stopped him being a hikikomori...(and maybe Matthew Perry on that matter?)

as for Czech, we still weren't in the manga but who cares XD
I'm sure he'd be all over Charles IV(lol, english wiki says he was the second bohemian king, but he was actually the eleventh XD), together with Austria he'd reminiscent over Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II and last but not least our very first president Tomáš(Thomas) Garrigue Masaryk

on everyone else I more or less agree with what the others wrote

as for other important people, like scientists, I'm not in the mood to write a long comment right now ^^"
besides I think the most imporant to the countries would always be kings, emperors, presidents, soldiers and revolutionaries and others like that...maybe some saints, too

Not A boss, but surely, /surely/ Alfred would have adored the Wright Brothers? And Thomas Edison, for that matter...

And who could also forget Amelia Earhart? First woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. I imagine America having quite the crush on her.. And was probably devastated at her going missing.

For England, you can't really forget a more recent royalty, which would be Princess Diana. Being a Brit, we absolutely adored her (she had a reputation for being known as the 'people's princess' compared to what the Queen is like, she was very hands on and involved with the public, which we all adored) and the country went into pretty bad grief when she died. I mean, I have been told by some non-brits about how weird it was to see us openly crying, so I assume that Arthur did at /least/ cry at Diana dying and had very strong feelings for her. He probably has quiet the attatchment to any of his monarchy, I'd imagine. (I always thought that he called the Queen 'Mum', for some reason. ft. xD)

Ooooh, And Margo Thatcher. Milk Snatcher. Whatever your preference of name. Arthur would have had QUITE the few thoughts and what have you with her. :P

[identity profile] yamikisara.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I could imagine most of the countries(at least the european ones + America and Canada) going into grief after princess' Diana's death, she was well known and loved all over the world

- Back in WWII, Germany would have been really obsessed with Hitler. Today, he's wondering how he couldn't see the madness. I'd say Germany was out of his mind as well.

- Adenauer as the post WWII boss has an important role in my opinion, too (even though he installed this stupid pension system).

- Kohl as the Kanzler of the German Unity may be one of Germany's favourites.

- The one Germany isn't sure what to think about would be Merkel. She's the first female boss and even though her first period of office wasn't bad... well, Germany is critical.

Well, that was about the bosses.

Other people Germany admires...
Pretty much all of his intellectual people. Beethoven, Schiller, Goethe - talking about the nation of poets and philosophers.

[identity profile] chibi-spork.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure England is still bitter about William the Conqueror. I bet every time the Hastings Direct advert comes on the TV, it puts him in a bad mood for the rest of the day XD

Also, I'm sure he'll never forget Oliver Cromwell, since he's the only person to rule England who wasn't a royal. I reckon Arthur was outraged by the whole affair - he seems like a big supporter of the monarchy to me.

Henry VIII is another memorable one. And Bloody Mary. The Tudors were all pretty memorable, in fact, for various reasons. (I didn't mention Elizabeth because she's obvious, and other people have already mentioned her).

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I imagine Cromwell is also a source of pride for Arthur, seeing as he formed the first republic in the western world in modern times

As far as I'm involved N. Italy is fond of his 4 dads, Garibaldi, Mazzini, Vittorio Emanuele and Cavour and is sad they aren't loved as they were previously by his own people.

S. Italy instead has no simpathy for Vittorio Emanuele or Cavour and he's more fond of the Borboni's kings.

Also I guess the both of them still has nightmares about WW2 and the people connected to it.

[identity profile] wayra90.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they still have nightmares, italian people tend to forget easily about their past -.- or just be melancholic and think better of the past. This would explain why there are still so many fascist idiots around here.
