Confirmation of Petition

Apparently the rumors about a petition in Korea to cancel the Hetalia anime are true:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-01-13/korean-protests-call-for-hetalia-anime-cancellation

No plans to cancel it as of yet. Interestingly enough, there were never plans for Korea to be in the anime.

[identity profile] arashiyukawa.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, "A Korean character does not appear in the anime version"? But isn't Korea has already been designed?

I hope the petition won't work... ;_; blocking the anime from Korea, maybe, but to actually cancel it, I doubt it.

[identity profile] atlikarinca.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not gonna say anything about the touchy protest business. But.

No Korea in the anime? Really? My icon begs to differ 8)

Well...fine I suppose. Though I highly doubt the lack of Korea and they can't possibly get the anime canceled.

Guess we'll just have to see how everything goes.

[identity profile] monoboo.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
But... yeah. Korea's in the characters section on the website, and I can't imagine they'd put up characters who aren't going to be in it. Unless they've changed their mind.

I'm more surprised Lithuania isn't there.

Oh, that is unfortunate.

To be honest, I kind of think Korea is the most AWESOME of the Asian nations portrayed in the comic, but yeah. Definitely not my call to dictate what people may and may not find offensive in this case. Hopefully it'll work out in the end.

I think it *is* likely that Korea isn't in the anime. Sure, there may be a character design, but there's no seiyuu listed, and by this point, someone would've been cast. Unless Korea's going to be voiceless, probably no Korea. (Similarly, Belarus and Greece have designs, but no listed seiyuu....)

Conversely, Lithuania *is* in the anime and has been cast, even though there's no character design.

[identity profile] lynn-pryderi.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, they could've done concepts planning to put him and Belarus and Greece in but it's lying on the cutting room floor by now. That's not hard to imagine, it happens a lot in production.

Liet IS there? Yey! ((clumsy joy-jumping))

If they said that Korea is not going to be included in the anime, it probably means he would just make a brief appearance during the Meeting of the World and then stop. He has just a line, in the coloured version of the Meeting, so they probably turned him into a silent character like Belgium, who appear but does not talk.

[identity profile] tsumibatsu.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just assumed the first episode's gonna cover the meeting of the world chapter and Korea does appear there. Why bother doing a character design if he hadn't been included in the cast at some point?
So, they're either back-pedalling now or what they really mean is "there were never plans to cover the Korea strips in the anime". Or something.

[Meh. I like Korea, I'll be sorry if he doesn't show up at that meeting. :( ]

NO LINK, NO REF

THAT GOES FOR YOU TOO, YOMIURI SHIMBUN.

I would like to grumpily note that ANN, geniuses that they are, also posted the EDITED comic strip by Hidekaz that seems to be a favourite to be bandied around by the right-wing 'petitioners' (read: noisy whiners). It lacks the fifth major punchline panel, which is sort of the point of the gag. You can see the original here (http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/k_r.htm).

God I am so sick of 'news' sites not checking their goddamn sources. IT IS THE INTERNET, ANN, YOU'RE NERDS, YOU SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO THIS.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe someone should drop them a mail... I mean, really, as much as Hetalia is controversial, this makes it seem worse than it is and a Misinformed Public Outrage is not something anyone needs at this point. =_=

Are the moderators watching these entries? Because people seem to find them just as annoying and useless as the "request" entries here. Being respectful to another country is one thing, but spreading baseless rumors and fear-mongering about this issue isn't helping anyone either.

In that article ANN presents the same doctored comic we saw before and lacks really any specifics in their story. How does any of that equate to the truth? It's about as believable as the youtube comments. Unfortunately there are still people who will eat these things up- and some of whom are on this community.

This is not a legitimate cause for alarm- it's still not even news. Seriously, what needs to be done to stop these idiotic posts?

[identity profile] xue.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)

Hi everyone,
[livejournal.com profile] youkofujima asked me to keep tabs on these topics and keeps things under control. Though so far things have been civil (for which I am proud of), I think there need to be a few small rules set for this conversation in particular.

First and foremost, two threads about it is MORE than enough. Let's try to keep every future comment or newsflash within them, this to avoid flooding the community.

Second, and really the one other thing, is that we should try to continue to be polite. Any disagreement and question we have on the matter is valid, but (while so far I haven't found any) let's avoid hateful or racist comments. Should they show up, they will be deleted and whoever made them will be warned. Relapsing on such behavior will bring forth a ban. How do you avoid this? Temper your vocabulary, consider if what you're going to say is based on an intelligent argument, and if you still have doubts, take five minutes off the computer to think about something else, come back to it, and go over your words with a cool head.

Also, don't forget, this may all be a rumor. Even if it isn't, regardless of what credited sources, don't forget there's always a petition against everything in the world, and they don't necessarily add up to any actual results.

Update: The Yomiuri Shimbun paper posted the full, seven-paragraph article (http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/world/news/20090113-OYT1T00441.htm) on its website. The Yahoo! Japan News website re-distributed a shorter version (http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20090113-00000034-yom-int) of the Yomiuri Shimbun article that does not include the last three paragraphs. Those last three paragraphs include the statement about one portal site that has collected 10,000 names and KIDS STATION's statement that the anime does not have the Korean character.

The image above comes directly from Himaruya's website (http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/k_r2.gif). It is the second of three GIF files for a particular comic strip. The full comic strip, with all three GIF files, is as follows:
