Question About Anime

I'm really sorry to be asking about this really unconfirmed thing, but it kind of got me confused.

I saw a comment on this drama CD at YouTube that said:

皆さん、アニメ化に妨害が入りました。公式サイト、原作者様に抗 議が入るとの情報です。今現在「我が国、我が民族、我が文化、そ して我が伝統を軽んじることは容認できない」とアニメ化に伴い韓 国で抗議活動と署名活動が行われてます。

Long story short, this person is saying that there is a disruption in the anime making process. According to this, Korea is protesting that they will not accept the "degradation" of their culture, country, people, etc., and is starting petitions.

Would this be legit? I would think it's too late to start something like that, but then again, it kind of sounds plausible.

I just thought I'd ask for other people's opinion, since this comm's members are much more well versed in this than I.

Here, too.
I would understand about the petitions in S.Korea, but would it be plausible to stop the animation just for that?

Whaaat? Wouldn't the animation be completed (or at least in its final stages) at this point?

I don't actually think the petition would really stop the production of the anime.
Afterall there is only a week and five days to the airing of the first episode.

And I always thought petitions in general are useless :\

Ooh! Really? Huh! Weird. o.o I highly doubt they can stop the animation. In fact I don't believe they can at all. It's plausible that they could ban the anime in Korea, but beyond that, it's kind of up to the laws in the country that it's being produced in, right? Is the anime being produced in Japan? Because if so Korea really can't tell them to stop, it's not their call. Just like it's not up to them if someone in another country starts spreading propaganda against them, which Hetalia is definitely not doing, but all the same.

I think they ought to include S. Korea anyways. I mean, every Hetalia character has their faults, S. Korea's aren't any worse than any of the other characters'. If France will be all right with Francis dashing about with a rose over his privates, and if Russia's not complaining about Ivan being a maniac, then I don't think Korea really has a right to complain...

If push comes to shove I'm sure the anime could get licensed under American copyright laws or something. Because we will produce anything here. That's not even a good thing. But it's true. :D

Ouch, no good.
I think that the power of this petition would actually depend from who is leading it. I mean, if it's just some online petition or is moved by a small group, then they probably won't be able to do enough pressure to stop the anime. However, if it's lead by some internal main group in Korea, then maybe their request won't go completly unheard. Did you know something more about this petition?

Even if this is true (I haven't seen anything about this anywhere, and I'm not going to check 2chan), petitions are only petitions. If there was more about this than disgruntled patriots protesting then there would be official announcements and whatnot.

[identity profile] shincaru.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I'd be wary of anything that just pops up from an internet comment on YouTube.

Much as the Korean internet populace tends to be super-nationalist yobs with too much time and misplaced self-indignation with anything involving Japan (LOL, and it does not stop them from eating up J pop culture, go figure), Japan's own douchery-inclined internet denizens often like to bait other Japanese users. There's a lot of cross-trolling/self-made propoganda going on to make one side or the other look bad, so I wouldn't take anything seriously until a news item shows up somewhere on a reputed site. :)

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. One of the reasons I stopped reading 2chan (except for a few neutral topics) was the rampant racism and general anti-Korean sentiments there, and I've seen similar comments on YouTube as well.

I expected something like this would come up, but I didn't expect it'd be this quick! The anime isn't even out yet!

I think a petition won't work, though. They can ban it in Korea (which I doubt, I even doubt Hetalia would be going overseas at all :P) but even it'll need more than just a petition.

[identity profile] faye-naruse.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh noez! I'd be depressed if the anime gets petitioned down :(

[identity profile] atiko.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think some petitions are going to have any effect on the anime as such... but if there really ARE large-scale protests, it probably won't air in Korea anytime soon.

Lighten up, Korea... D= do you have no political cartoons/harmless satire whatsoever over there?

[identity profile] shincaru.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Public domain Korean satire is actually pretty new - until around the late 1990s, you could be arrested for doing that sort of thing (LOL MILITARY DICTATORSHIPS DISGUISED AS DEMOCRACY). :3

And while Koreans can be dumb about protests (KOREA-WIDE CANDLELIGHT PROTEST ABOUT ... BEEF IMPORTS), not to denigrate Hetalia, most Koreans could care less about some Japanese anime. Korean internet dumbasses =/= Korean protest population. Koreans are even tired of the Dokdo/Takeshima/Liancourt Rocks thing, and that was a big button-pusher earlier in 2008 too.

Oh dear. *scratches head* I'm normally not the sort to say it, but this sounds to me like a case of someone's Delicate Sensibilities being offended.
If it is truth, that there is a petition I mean, well, I doubt that anything will really come from it.
But, I doubt 'struth, and until we find something more reputable, I'm not about to get worried.

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
A quick search on Moonphase tells me there's no Hetalia-related news of this sort. Until it shows up there, I don't see any cause for alarm.

[identity profile] shadow-piper.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a case where I'm going to have to roll my eyes. Hetalia makes fun of everyone, so its very butthurt to think that Korea is being degraded. If you can't laugh at yourself, your sense of humor sucks, ja? :/
Honestly, I doubt that the anime will remain unfinished if Korea protests.

[identity profile] kimitora.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
xD Protests from another country isn't going to stop Hetaliaaaa~

Legit or not, it's protests against a parody anime. That's like... arresting someone for making fun of their president because the president got offended. Or something. Did I make any sense?

Anywho, all that does it make people wish the protestors could not be so serious about a houmor-related issue.

Korea is not "lucky" to be included, and those offended shouldn't have to explain why they don't find Hetalia funny. Anyone on this community acting like a citizen of Korea (or China, for that matter) "has no right" to be upset about how their country is portrayed obviously knows nothing about their relationship with Japan. Do everybody a favor and read some history other than the one that includes moe nations touching each other.

Hetalia's main story is coming up on actual events of World War II which is still very real and very painful for many people around the world. Until another country has a true public outcry against Hetalia (internet petitions are NOT valid legal complaints, and youtube comments are not truth), I really don't want to see this kind of stuff on the community.

Someone posted the same thing on an audition video for a Hetalia manga project I put up on Youtube:

Hello, everyone.
Now, in Korea, Hetalia have banned movement of the animated TV ...
6,000 more signatures are gathered.
The reason is that South Korea is laughs.
Is a national disgrace.
Distorting history
Too bad joke
What fits this fray?
Does not affect?
I'm worried what should I do good?

Then, it turned into a debate thread. Something tells me that someone's going around just posting this all over the place either out of paranoia that this petition will actually stop the anime or to cause controversy of some sort.

First of all, I don't think S. Korea can cause a full on stop of production. If they really are protesting the anime - as in, if YouTube comments ever had any merit to them at all - then maybe it'd be banned in their country.

Secondly, "get a sense of humor"? Any parody of anything can be potentially offensive to someone. Especially over subjects like, uh, war. Telling them to "get a sense of humor" is not going to suddenly make them see the light. Just respect their opinion and walk away if it's bugging you so much.

[identity profile] fullmetalkatu.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Theoretically, it would mean something like, "There will only be so many episodes" or "no season two". There are probably (if the release is really so close) five to ten episodes done. In the US, with television, the pilot will be filmed and then when the network approves it they'll go ahead and film a few more episodes before the pilot airs, so, even if they cancel it, there are still a few episodes that exist.
