Are you proud of the character of your country?

Please, write what kind of nationality you are, and why you are proud of him/her. I am curious about your opinion. :)

I am Hungarian and really proud of Hungary's character. She was created very well. And because she was the very first female character in the Hetalia. And when she was little she thought she was a boy and really used to act like a boy! xD And a what kind of superb fighter proved to be in the battle against the Prussians.
It is I like in her as she used to take care of the little Italians. It is interesting for me she is yaoi fan. For a long time I did not know about there were so many Hungarians who like boy-boy things; only me. :D

I'm British myself, and I love the way way they depicted him, although Britannia long ago was originally depicted as a female.
I did always think he would of been tsundere anyway because I think that is how some British people act anyway and it just makes him so cute in my eyes XD.
I can't cook either and I do like to believe in the supernatural too, we have that in common.
Yes I am very happy how they depicted England :) he's cute, stubborn, adorable and kind, I really am proud :)

I'm Britsh (English, to be specific), and I don't know that I'd say I'm "proud" of England. He can be pretty dickish sometimes, and I think Hima once described him as being probably the most pitiful nation in the series. Despite all that though, I do still love his character! He can be strangely adorable at times, and he used to be a pirate and can perform magic (which is pretty awesome!). His cooking sucks but so does mine, so we have that in common!

I guess I'd just say that I like England's character a lot, and even if his tsundere behaviour isn't neccessarilly something to be proud of I wouldn't want him to ever change! XD

I'm Canadian and, yeah, I love Matthew. Despite all the typical Canadian stereotypes he's pretty adorable. Love that he has a pet polar bear and purple eyes. Love, too, that he's unassuming and often overlooked, but get him riled up and he'll stand up for himself. He represents Canada well. Go, Matthew.

but my parents are from the Philippines and Puerto Rico (technically a commonwealth but whatevs) and I don't think they've appeared in Hetalia yet

Mexico's not canon, so America it is:

I absolutely love America's characterization; he's silly, loud, a bit obnoxious but loveable overall. He's also pretty smart, he can be silly but he can be logical. We definitely do have some obsession with heroes, justice and saving the day. I also didn't realize how ridiculous and common our florescent desserts were until I studied abroad and the Italians asked me a lot about crazy colored sweets.

What bothers me, however, is how sometimes the fandom exaggerates America's incapability to read the atmosphere and makes him stupid beyond reason. Then again, I'm sure most of us don't like it when other characters get reduced to one trope. I can't even begin to tell you how much I hated the idea of Mexico being "the Belarus of Latin America" back in the early days, it's not as prevalent as it is today the thing now is adding tacos to everything.

I'm from America, & he's one of my least favorite characters. Sadly, he just irritates the hell out of me. ^^; He's loud, obnoxious, pushy, thinks he's hot sh*t (which I suppose could describes Prussia as well, but I find it much more appealing in Prussia than America). I don't even like his character songs. I'm probably in the minority though, & will get attacked by rabid fangirls, but hey, it's my opinion & I'm entitled to it. ;p

I am Italian-Dominican born in America. I am more South Italian than North.. although I have blood from both sides through my grand parents on my mother's side.

So Romano... I think he is too much of a coward at times and puts up too much of a front, but I am proud of him. He tries to be strong and shows gratitude in his own way when he wants to.
The Sicilian stereotypes are pretty accurate too. Of course, they are just stereotypes and nothing more.

Feliciano...Also too much of a coward but I LOVE his personality otherwise. I relate more to him which is why I cosplay him sometimes. The North Italian stereotypes are too accurate with him. lol He does have a serious side though, and I wish that was explored more is all. I am definitely proud of him.

Alfred...I hate him. I am sorry. I can never bring myself to like his character. However, the stereotypes are VERY accurate. This is probably WHY I can't stand him. lol I..am not proud of him. :( (If he were a little like Romano.. I would be though. lol)

There is no Dominican Republic character so can't really say anything about that.

Ukraine: I am not Ukrainian...but I've traveled there and lived there. My friends there consider me honorary Ukrainian which I think is cute. My input probably doesn't matter much regarding her though but I have a strong connection to the country so just for my sake I will state this. I am not proud of her character in Hetalia. Too focused on breast jokes. And too many people make jokes on her. I just can't take that. I am however so glad that Himaruya never made Chernobyl jokes with her. That part I hope NEVER happens because it wasn't a joking matter and it pisses me off whenever people joke about it. I lived through that time so it's very fresh in my memory and out of respect I would never joke about it. Same thing about the Holocaust jokes (only I didn't live through that..but still pisses me off). This is why I hate the english version of Hetalia anime. I am happier just watching the japanese version where they don't make direct jokes about it. Ukraine is a lot stronger than Hetalia portrays her. I wish Himaruya explored Ukraine's history more too... There is so much more to her than "large tracts of land" and Russia's sister. She has really strong connections with Poland (love-hate kind too like Russia) and Canada in particular. Hoping this gets explored in the future for her.

I liked this question. Thank you for bringing it up! <3

I'm from America, but both of my parents are from Vietnam, and I associate myself more to that then the former, but I'll talk about both

For Vietnam, I absolutely love her. Even though she barely appeared in the comic (as far as I know), I just love her. According to my father, Vietnam is first created by two women (sisters maybe? I can't recall), and that there are multiple of strong women in our country that shapes it's history, so I love how she is portrayed as headstrong. As for looks (like this year's Hetaween and the strip with Taiwan), that is so like me. Whenever a camera is around, I just run away, like half of my family lol.

For America, I have mixed feelings for him. I think it's alright that he loves the concept of freedom and that we are a "free" country, but I don't know anyone who is American and screams about freedom a lot (Sure, My father has a total of... 7 American flags in our house, but that doesn't scream freedom, right?). As for the stereotypes, I just find that annoying. Sure, we have a problem with obesity due to fast food like McDonald, but I just like don't like how it is portrayed with Alfred (even though I don't know any other way to point that out). America is also kinda... too loud and obnoxious for my liking too. Sorry dude ^^"

[identity profile] the9thstone.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
America makes me cringe sometimes, but it's in the sense that //yes, he's so spot-on//. Otherwise, he's adorable, and you can tell that he really wants to right wrongs, so I like him. Taiwan is just adorbs, and her sunshine personality is also spot-on.

[identity profile] theacidqueen.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I live in America and am not particularly proud of that, but I think America's character represents the northeast USA fairly well. USA is a hugely diverse country, though, and there should probably be at least 4 America characters, but that would be confusing lol.

my father is from Budapest and I'm very proud of my Hungarian heritage. I've been there and wish to live there. Hungary is one of my favorite characters from anything and I really love how weirdness is a big part of her character. Hungarians are proud to be weird!

my maternal grandmother is Swedish, and I grew up with more Swedish customs than any other nationality so I'm also very proud of that. I think Sweden is a lovable character and I'm proud of Sweden's strength and progressiveness, plus his appreciation for quietude.

I'm from the USA(sorry for being another comment from the U.S.). I love the character of Alfred, but not necessarily "proud" of him in the patriotic sense. He is an adorable doofus, but is really smart when he put his mind to it. Though the stereotypes can make me feel second-hand embarrassment at times, but I still love the character, I can't help but laugh and smile most of the time. He has a good heart, even though at times his arrogance gets the best of him.

Australia is okay. He's about what you'd expect. China's okay, he's about what you'd expect. Japan's okay, he's totally boring though. All in all, they're all okay. Nothing to write home about. 8U

As a result, I'm a boring mix of all three.

I'm Welsh, so the closest thing I have to relate to is England. While I do love him, as most people know the relationships between England and the other UK countries is a sore point and it really, REALY pisses me off when he's referred to as the UK instead of just England. I can't remember if it happens in the original text (I know he has the union jack next to him but I think he's still referred to as England?), and I think in the dub is was explained away - though whether by the studio or the fans I can't remember - by the rest of us ones ~not being bothered~ about going to meetings, and making England go in our stead. Like, I know we go as the UK to united nation meetings and the like, but it just rubs me the wrong way in Hetalia. I already deal with England domineering over my culture every day, and it's repeatedly pushed back in my face every time England is referred to as the UK in hetalia. 8|

I also wouldn't say I'm "proud" of him, either. While, again, I do love him, sometimes some of his character traits piss me off, like him being drunk, his tsundere-ness, and for lack of a better term, his 'Britishness' - or what other people perceive it to be. Because I can tell you it is what most of us call posh English, and it's not very representative of the entire country. I know it's asking too much of Hima since he probably has no idea of other accents, but it would be at least humorous if the dub team throw in a random cockney accent or something lol

Also my dad told me years ago that my great great great grandfather was from Prussia, but when I asked again recently he told me he was German/half German... so I'm confused on that part. 8| BUT EITHER WAY I looooooove both of them <33333 And I'm really glad that Germany's anger has toned down a bit recently. One of the things that was tiring me out about his character was his short temper towards Italy in particular.

I'm born, raised, and now back in Hong Kong. I'm very fond of his character, although if I were to create an anthropomorphic representation of my city, I'd probably be more harsh about it...Himaruya honestly made HK far more cool and likable than I would have (as much as I DO love my city) :3 there have been comic arcs that displayed current situations in Hong Kong pretty well, as in it was done tactfully not to offend either side and was able to show it in a lighthearted way, which I appreciate.

Now to be unique and controversial, I'm that one Hong Konger who actually considers herself as Chinese too. In general, I really really like how he's done in canon: shrewd and practical, blunt and with little to no sugarcoating filter (which is so true in reality, honestly), a well-meaning but out of the loop and overly nagging mother type. There are some fandom portrayals I'm not too crazy about, but in the end characterisation can be pretty complicated and the thing about Hetalia is that it's taken from all sorts of angles and POVs. Mine follows how I know Chinese people to be: hearty, diligent, straightforward and ambitious like hell.

Though I lived in Canada for 4 years, I'm not overly attached to the character as a citizen so as long as he's funny and cute, I'm all for it =P

I'm also 1/32 Portuguese but come on, that hardly counts anymore (just makes for interesting family history).

I'm Swedish, and I can honestly say that I adore Hetalia's Sweden - he's definitely one of my favourite characters. I really like his overall personality, how he comes off as intimidating but is actually really sweet and lovable, and I can personally relate to his being quiet and awkward so. ^^; He's definitely in my top three of favourite characters.

I'm Dutch, and the Netherlands is a little bit too cool to be Dutch XD I like his character though even though he's so stereotypical stingy.
His appearance is spot on though, my brother looks exactly like him! (except the green eyes, my brother's are blue...) It's just his behaviour which is off.

I was born and raised in Rome, so I guess my nation is Italy Romano, or South Italy.. Don't misunderstand, I love him. I really, really do. But sometimes I don't feel he's the "right" one. I mean, we Italians ourselves consider our country in three parts: North, Middle, and finally South. Being born in Rome, our capital, makes me feel belonging to the Middle part, not the South one. For us, South Italy is that part that comprehends Campania, Calabria, Basilicata, Sicily and Sardinia.

It's a simple fact of culture and past history: South Italy was generally under the control of Spain, as you know it. Middle Italy belonged (and yes, BELONGED) to Vatican city, and together they made the Papal States, or Stato Pontificio, in italian. Rome is also located precisely in the centre of the country, and this strenghtens my feeling. But I understand why Hima chose not to represent Italy with three characters: it would have been too complicated to explain. Italian history is really messy, believe me.

Anyway, I love both Romano and Veneziano, even if they don't exactly give the right image, in my opinion. It's true that we're quite dumb in war matters, but we're not that idiotic as it seems. I mean, we gave birth to a lot of amazing characters who revolutioned world history, we're not that stupid or uncultered. However, we're chaotic, inconclusive and superficial, especially now that our political class is so amazingly inept. Sad, but true. We have a lot of flaws, but also a lot of good points: and, if I might say, the most open and friendly Italians are the South and Middle ones, not the North. And not only with girls.

I really can't decide if we've become inefficient because we've been kind of unlucky in our past, or if we are now unlucky because we have been inefficient. These two concepts are deeply entangled in our way of being. The problem of Italians is that we have been separated for the longest time in our home, and we couldn't develop a coherent political and social strategy. Even now that we are united, our differences are palpable and persistent. And because of that, there are a lot of different traditions, dialects and even stereotypes. Even among us. Remeber the different Republics, Reigns, Principalities and Comuni? Different "countries", different people.

Even for me it's difficult speaking about my own country, because there are a lot of things that I still can't understand about our history. I don't want to justify our current problems with the past, but it has a major part in our present situation. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make such a long speech XD
In a nutshell, I do love my country (both parts), and I'm proud of being Italian... yet I'm not. I would like us to be more.. I don't know, able to live the present without dragging the weight of our past failures. We can do it, we have the intelligence and the instruments, and yet.. we just can't. It's like our fate consists in being supervisioned by someone else, and I simply can't accept that.

I can't undestand if I just love or hate my country XD

[identity profile] jjblue1.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, it'll be of no help to hate it, so you might as well to try and love it. It'll help make easier to try and improve it to your liking. It's really hard to do sacrifices for something you hate...

If it can help if you want to have fun studying the history of Italian unification you'll discover people back then tried to make the best they could but they were facing problems that were bigger than they were and ended up making many mistakes that, of course, ended up making matters worse.

Now that we know the consequences of those mistakes we can sit down and say: no, really, how could you think it would work? but back then, with the limited knowledge they have, dealing all of sudden with a kingdom that was that large and with the mentality that people had back then, they really didn't know any better. Sadly one will pay for each mistake he does. Many 'apparently right' choices were horrible mistakes and we're still paying for them.

As you said now it's only a matter of managing to let go of the past and walk toward the future, without forgetting the past mistakes but without allowing them to drag us down.

[identity profile] jjblue1.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Italian and I'm not proud of either Veneziano or Romano. Mind you the characters are lovable and I love them but to me they don't feel Italians or representations of north and south, both in present and past Italy. They lack some fundamental Italian knowledge and characteristics and really seem nothing more than the result of someone who'd only heard stereotypes about Italy but had no idea how Italians work. Sometimes I'm appalled when they lack of the basic knowledge and feelings an actual Italian or a past Italian should have, of how they represent the wrong part of Italy (Romano should be central Italy yet he's south, north Italy was split in many states with different histories yet we've one single character, the friendly southerns had been turned into a guy perpetually angry and insecure than's not proud of himself at all and that's very rude with people, the not so sociable and always busy northerns have been turned into an overly friendly, overly clingy guy who spends most of his time sleeping).

It's true it wouldn't have been easy to represent faithfully Italy as Italy had been cut in many parts and therefore each of this parts developed a different history and character. People from Lombardy aren't the same from people from Emilia or from Piedmont or from Veneto or from Trentino, even if they're all northerns, still Veneziano came out as a characters that suffers of the fact he's supposed to represent too many things while his author has only vague knowledge of them (and I've the feelings in the original plans Veneziano was supposed to represent all Italy, ence why he's called Italy, differently from his brother and why he has the friendly nature that many associate with italy but that's actually more southern than northern).

So I fear it's more a problem of being impossible to represent Italy with just Veneziano and Romano and the little knowledge Himaruya had at the time he created them than anything else that causes me to feel very distant from the way those 2 acts.

I'm from Taiwan~ I'm not sure how accurate her portrayal is but... you know, it's Himapapa, a guy in Japan~ ^^;
His idea of what countries are like and other people's view will differ of course...
I kinda wish she could appear more~ she's more than just "cute", I think.
She's also cheerful and stubborn, and headstrong~
But whenever I see her I'm like *w* <333

Ah America. Yep~
I think he's accurate :'D but at least Hima didn't make him like, a jerk
He can be kind and funny, I like him too~

I like Taiwan's character but I don't really know enough to really judge her character. I've only been there a few times and I've never lived in Taiwan so I've really only seen the food (yuuuuuuusssssssssss º w º) and things like that. I truthfully do not think that she's a VERY accurate representation, but with what I have seen, I guess that It could work :D

As for America... I'm kind of on both sides for now. Yes, he is funny and all but I see him as a bit obnoxious at times. I guess that It's just how more people beiw America now so I guess that in their eyes it might be accurate, who knows ^ ^ I'm kind of bothered by how a lot of people think that way though, I mean some Americans may be annoying but we all (probably) know someone like that and they might not even be American. Oh well.

As for both, I'm fine with their representations and wouldn't like it any other way :)
On a side note, I think that the countries are actually people themselves and that they don't exactly completely change due to their people changing. What their personality is like is based on stereotypes, but at the same time, the things that they went through make who they are, not only how their people are judged. I don't know, I just wanted to get that out there.... I digress ''OTL

I currently live in China (..~<3) so I'll just write some things about him. In my opinion, China is represented fairly well, but for some reasons, it could be seen that he's not. I like the idea of China being reminiscent of the past because there is a good reason for him to e like that, and I also like how he is depicted in other ways such as being, the asian older brother (PARENT/TEACHER OAO), and how he is trying to be "chic and cool" in his own way because it's just funny... Mostly because of the Asian parent stereotype...and the fact that my parents are like that so I can connect to his ways of ... teaching...? :P China is modernizing quickly so I see why he wants to be "chic and cool" (PFFt. Oh China you.) Otherwise, I feel as if the whole picture has not been portrayed just yet because there is more to China than that. Well, maybe I'm just bias, he is my favorite character after all..... and BTW the food here is awesome.. :3

Chào mọi người, I'm from Vietnam nè~
Vietnam-chan still has not so much appearance in the manga so I can't tell her portrayal of my country's right or not~
But I can tell that her personality's typical of the traditional generation: humble, shy, not so confident of her appearance but surprisingly skilful~
Vietnam's design might be not as detailed as other female countries but I'm totally into this simplicity - it shows her modesty!
By the way, I kinda look like Vietnam-chan, except the golden eyes though, and sometimes I feel sympathetic with her inability to read the atmosphere~
That's why I love Ecchan besides the reason that she represents my country =D

I'm Chinese and I love China's character!! He's so adorable and loves cute things like me. Well I'm not adorable, just the loving cute things is just so similar. I always had a long haired Chinese boy complex... Pretty ponytail, at one time my hair looked really similar to China's hair, when it was on a ponytail. This wasn't even on purpose, MDR.
Although I was born in Canada.... I'm just glad they included Canada... If they didn't, that would be really sad...

Born and rised in Italy, as what I think of them, well I don't have a clear idea because they're so different and I don't know well the northern part to judge it.
I love my country, but I can't say the same for its rapresentations, like my fellow compatriots said, the way Himaruya stereotyped them lacked of information about the country itself, but I can't also criticize Himaruya since he just used information he found or heard about our country and made two guys which should portray the nortern and the southern part of a country which is much more complicated than what it shows.

Italy has always been a divided country, and through the years this heterogeneity deacresed, but didn't completely disappear.

Truth to be told, I don't really like them, their characterization is kind of messed and like I said it'd be really hard to rapresent Italy whit just one or two characters because it's just impossible to portray a so fragmented land, separated for years through history. Though I'm really fond of them as well, because I can't just turn my back at supposedly human rapresentations of my country.

Anyway I quote as much as the other Italians said. Just I'd like to add we're talking about stereotyped rapresentation of countries and that most of them are just rumors "you can't judge a book from its cover", right? I think the only way to really potray a country's live it. You understand really what it's like to be an "Italian" or "American" and so on only if you live like one, and I hope people wouldn't think less of any country because thay make it appear as a place full of criminals or fat people etc.

I'm italian and I love both the brothers <3 But as someone stated before me, there are many lacks in their characterization as italians. I wish Hetalia was more politically incorrect with ALL the nations. Sometimes I grew tired of other fans tipying PASTA1!!!11 or maybe insults. Also during the series, when their negative qualities were over-emphasized. That's why I love the english dub! I think it's funnier and actually makes fun of every country.

[identity profile] misty-rain.livejournal.com 2013-11-28 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably no secret that I'm very fond of America's character. I hesitate to use the word proud, because I think that it is a blinding emotion (where someone doesn't see flaws in something and thinks they have no flaws), but I don't feel any sense of shame or disappointment that he is what my nation is portrayed as.
If anything, I think we got lucky having someone like America portray our nation.
It could have been so much worse.
I think America is human, combined with stereotypes. He is loud, too sure of himself, plays the 'hero' role to an extreme, and manipulates situations for his favor (often times by acting oblivious to anyone else's opinion). Yet, while these are stereotypes of America as a nation, who doesn't know someone with some of these traits? And these are not the ONLY traits America has. It really strikes a nerve when people say they don't like him for the before mentioned qualities I mentioned. They're overlooking/ignoring the fact that he is often kind, highly principled, silly, cheerful, lovable, and when he DOES feel he's crossed a line or hurt someone, he is quick to want to fix it (in a reluctant but undeniable way). He is so human; he is such a blend of flaws and good qualities that he really feels like a living representation of my nation. His good qualities outweigh his negatives ones by far for me, so much so that I'm dismayed when people view him negatively.
I'm grateful to Himaruya for giving us such a wonderfully human representation of my country. I honestly have a hard time seeing how someone could dislike America, let alone hate him, with the huge heart given to him.

[identity profile] awesomeness01.livejournal.com 2013-11-29 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm from the Netherlands. I can't say I'm proud of my character for the country but I don't dislike him either. It probably helps that he's not so often in the spotlight and when he does, he seems to be accompanied by Belgium or Spain. Therefore you can have more input of imagining character traits than if someone else would. I don't know, one could feel less insulted that way? But for what Himuraya came up with I think it's pretty good, like the stinginess with money and sort of emotionless expressions. But the Netherlands being more of a quit person is not really quit right. (At least that is how he comes across to me in the comics) I personally experience other Dutch people generally to be rather loud, arrogant, insensitive and superficial. In stead of being quit in the presence of other people, they love to express there opinion(mostly negative) on everything just to appear more important and interesting than they really are. (I've got issues -_-) Something, I think, Belgians would think the same. But maybe for the better that it has not really being translated into the character.

Also I like his relationship with Belgium although maybe not perfectly accurate. Belgium doesn't really seem to represent Belgians themselves to me. Don't take me wrong but it just seems she is way more enthusiastic and outgoing than I consider most Belgians are. Instead Belgians tend to be more reserved I think.

Well. that's about it I think. I might have missed new stuff that has come out about the Netherlands but it's how I remembered it from some months ago. Wonder though how Luxembourg will turn out, it would be awesome to see Benelux together.

Well, I'm American. I'm so mixed as far as nationality goes, and I'm one of those Americans that basically doesn't focus nor care about nationality in the first place because lets face it if you are born and raised in America you are American regardless of race. XD

Anyways, yeah, I'm proud of Alfred. I love the humor they put into his character because there is some truth to it, but there is also a true kindness under his gigantic ego, and intelligence under all his random acts of stupidity I think that suits Americans, since we can come off as egotistical idiots at first without even meaning too, but when you get know a person (from any country) a little, that's just a fake persona they put up, and I think that's what Alfred has for protection. What I like most about him though is that he is a really nice person to the few friends he has (Kiku , Arthur [I think their arguments are just part of their relationship;not true arguments, since they obviously care for one another a lot in the anime], and I loved how Alfred treated LIt./Torris). I think his kindness under the surface really showed in Paint it White.

I'm a American but sometimes I'd find my own country (APH America) annoying but other than that, he's a okay personification.

To be honest, when I first time saw Finland, I was kinda disappointed. I expected him to be like Sweden or something. :D But I still like how cheerful, optimistic and adorable he is. And his naming skills are pure awesomeness, seriously. So yes, I'm proud of him. ^^

I'm born and raised in Vienna and I still live there. Austria is one of my fav characters, but he represents only Vienna (the whole other part of Austria, especially the Alps, have a completely different culture - it's very similar to Switzerland's) and I think that's kinda sad. Plus, today Austria isn't a very musican country; It's only famous for music because we had some well known composers in the 18.century.

Well, but I love Austria because he is so ... elegant..? :D I can't describe it.
And I TOTALLY love AusHun (♥OTP♥) and It's funny... Every Austrian Hetalian hates PruHun (me included) - I don't know why.

Ah, yes, and I must say I totally hate the fact that in every freakin' fanfiction Austria and Germany and Prussia (well, let's say all the Germans) speak in such an creepy accent. You know, so instead of "I like this cake" they say "I like zhis cake". If you go to Vienna one day, you will see that no one speaks here like that. Austrians speak generally a very good English (because English and German are related languages).

Ok, then...
