I'm born, raised, and now back in Hong Kong. I'm very fond of his character, although if I were to create an anthropomorphic representation of my city, I'd probably be more harsh about it...Himaruya honestly made HK far more cool and likable than I would have (as much as I DO love my city) :3 there have been comic arcs that displayed current situations in Hong Kong pretty well, as in it was done tactfully not to offend either side and was able to show it in a lighthearted way, which I appreciate.
Now to be unique and controversial, I'm that one Hong Konger who actually considers herself as Chinese too. In general, I really really like how he's done in canon: shrewd and practical, blunt and with little to no sugarcoating filter (which is so true in reality, honestly), a well-meaning but out of the loop and overly nagging mother type. There are some fandom portrayals I'm not too crazy about, but in the end characterisation can be pretty complicated and the thing about Hetalia is that it's taken from all sorts of angles and POVs. Mine follows how I know Chinese people to be: hearty, diligent, straightforward and ambitious like hell.
Though I lived in Canada for 4 years, I'm not overly attached to the character as a citizen so as long as he's funny and cute, I'm all for it =P
I'm also 1/32 Portuguese but come on, that hardly counts anymore (just makes for interesting family history).
