Hetalia Day Fundraiser Result!
While I still have time, happy Hetalia Day! Hope everyone had an awesome celebration this weekend (or will next weekend)!
Just a quick message here: the New York City Hetalia Day group sponsored a fundraiser for UNICEF for Hetalia Day (you might remember we did this last year, too). We've had about twenty people collecting donations since August, and we counted and donated the entire amount today.
So just how much did we raise in the name of Hetalia?

$1,128.40, more than double our total from last year! ♥

Here's all the cash sitting on my table (it's over $1000). That lockbox was full of coins, and weighed about forty-one pounds (18.5 kg)!! It was very difficult to take to the bank this morning. @_@
And for slightly more relevance, here's a picture of most of us on Saturday:

Hetalia fans sometimes have a less-than-stellar reputation, but we were able to prove again that we are not just an obnoxious fandom, and we can make a change in the world. I am insanely proud of everyone who participated in the fundraiser, and I hope that, for next year, the coordinators of local events will consider fundraising as well. Not only is it for a fantastic cause -- providing food, medicine, and aid to needy children around the world -- but it makes you feel REALLY GOOD about yourself. :D
Edit: Oh man, what a warm reception! Thanks for all the nice words, everyone. If any of you are interested inbeing cool and starting your own Hetalia Day fundraiser next year, or for another occasion, or if you want to donate for no reason at all, check out unicef.org. Everyone reading this message has the means to help those who are less fortunate than we happen to be: let's spread the positivity and love! ♥

To explain further -
I'm a graduate student of International Education, concentration in Japanese culture/policies. Recently my research has revolved around Japanese modern visual culture and students of the international community.
I've worked with some professors from prominent universities in Japan, and it really warms their hearts to see efforts like these by students all over the world. (I always share my findings with them!)
We believe that the positive encouragement affiliated with the circulation of Japanese modern culture among students (especially in Western societies) has really aided in global acceptance and celebration of world cultures/languages (especially Japanese).
So, in short, thank you!
Being fans of anime, manga, and hundreds of other sub-cultures of the Japanese culture is not only a super awesome hobby, but in part is making the world a better place.

does it make a difference that i've been interested in japanese culture and language for, like, the past twenty-odd years?Being fans of anime, manga, and hundreds of other sub-cultures of the Japanese culture is not only a super awesome hobby, but in part is making the world a better place.
And that was one of our aims: to promote the fact that not only "normalcy" exists within the group of weirdos in costumes, but that good works exist here, too (especially in the Hetalia community, as we get a bad rap a lot of the time).

:D Those who were, are, and that will be students in the future are related to this, as education is an on-going process.
I'm not super sure if "normalcy" is what our aim was to prove, but rather that this creates a bridge between global cultures just by having even one interest in common (like Hetalia). Knowing that these strong connections would present future generations with greater opportunities.

Totally irrelevant but I almost thought that was a case of cigars instead of coins.<strike>Totally irrelevant but I almost thought that was a case of cigars instead of coins.<s/strike>

When I was laying out all the penny rolls so I could count them -- there were more than seventy! -- I said I felt like I was laying out pellets of cocaine. Derp. Thanks! If you have a Hetalia Day group, you should totally suggest to do something like this next year. It's a lot of fun seeing all the contributions from people pile up, and you never know when you're gonna find that one really generous person who'll make your day! ♥

Good job everyone! I wish I could have been there, but I had a marching band competition. Oh well, maybe I can come next year.
