it was no footage from the actual anime or manga. But merchandise was ok.

What about the artwork on the covers?

It's ok as long as they didn't show any parts of the episodes or comic strips from the manga.

So the artwork inside the book or box is not allowed, but the artwork on the outside of the book or box, done by the same person/people, and not the person who submitted the video, is? That seems a little strange, don't you think?

you could say that using merchandise is a bit of a loophole in the rules.(don't worry I'm bit confused as well)
