I think Norway would be a so-and-so Nicholas.

[identity profile] astl-l.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
People generally assume Ludwig's last name is Beilschmidt because that's Gilbert's and they're so-called brothers.

I've seen numerous fan names for those characters. One of my personal favorites is a fan name for Denmark, Loki. My friend named her phone that and calls it Denmark sometimes.

[identity profile] danmark-tan.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
*uses Liev Johansen for Norway, for no reason other than I like how it sounds*

[identity profile] kotakia.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Norway is normally Norge, Iceland is Fjalar, and Denmark is Knut in things I see. Ukraine is Katyusha or something similar. Rome-jii-chan I call Populus Romanus because well, that's what the country of Rome was in Latin.

[identity profile] sturmig.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Norge is not a human name, it is the country name in some Scandinavian languages.

Denmark was named "Matthias Kohler", but it was unofficial. I'd stick to that even if it was unofficial.

[identity profile] rebornhayatofan.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
same here i think it fits Denmark, plus Matthias is my all time favorite name, i just call Denmark this without hesitation. its a vary Nordic name.

All based on roleplay and just boredom.

1. Hong Kong--my friend who roleplays him named him Henry Ng Tsun Kit.
2. Germany--My Germany calls him "Ludwig Goethe Richter," and I assume that Gilbert named him "Ludwig Goethe" but, while under his care, he used "Beilschmidt" as a surname.
3. Ukraine--the common one: Yekaterina "Katyusha" Braginskaya
4. Tibet--I'll look up names to call him! [loves doing that!]
5. Denmark--My Denmark named him "Hans Jeppeson"
6. Norway--Krinan or Kristoffer Miline(same roleplay, same roleplayer)
7. Iceland--Ragnar or Viggo(from two different roleplays)
8. Belgium--I named her Laura Van Damme. I didn't realize I had used VAN DAMME until later, though. XD
9. Netherlands--I named him Hendrik, although I'm debating on what his surname should be. I usually make it "Van Rijin," "De Keizer," or "De Vries."
10. Cameroon--I'll also work on his!
11. Seychelles--From roleplay--Andrea
12. Cuba--From roleplay "Che Céspedes"
13. Taiwan--From roleplay "Tsai Ying Xiu"
14. Roma-jii-chan--I'll also work on this one.
15. Germania--Same
16. HRE--It couldn't have been Ludwig, considering Italy may have remembered. My friend named him "Charles LeMange," so I usually call him "Charles." XD
17. Liechtenstein--Leith "Vanessa" Edelstein-Zwingli or Lili. Edelstein because, historically acurately, she should be his daughter. -Zwingli because of Vash.
18. Australia--STEVE. [shot] No, seriously, we call him "Steven "Steve" Abercrombie" in our roleplay.

I'm writing a Roma-jii-chan fanfic right now, and I use the name "Romulus Paulus" (It means "little Romulus," in reference to the founder of Rome).

[identity profile] jazzsea-19.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Paulus is "Paul" as far as I know, I think you're thinking of "Parvulus" meaning little
My latin is a bit rusty though, I could be wrong n_n

I have named Rome "Marcus Cassius Avitus."

Marcus being a very common given name of ancient Rome (praenomen), Cassius being a prominent gens/clan name (nomen), and Avitus being his family name within the gens (cognomen). Avitus, if I am remembering right, means something along the lines of "grandfatherly."

I really haven't delved with anyone but Ukraine, and I always seem to use Yekaterina/Katya/Katyusha/etc....

Since all three are the same damn diminutive form of Katherine, I don't see why not. XD

I think the names for Scotland and Ireland are the following:

Scotland - Derek (just because an old childhood friend on mine has the same name).

Ireland - Brian (Pfft same reason. xD But the name meaning and its origin suits perfectly).

Has for Denmark, Soren ( o with a / in ) is cute too

I love the name Tobias! But I already have a character with that name, so when I decided to RP Norway I named him Soren. XD

hong kong's called 'kaoru' a lot because of the '香' in 香港, but that's jap, so some people just call him 'hong' instead
and taiwan, alot of people call her meimei or mei-chan (little sister in chinese)

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've named all the UK sibs as follows:

Scotland: Ian
Ireland: Caoimhe (female)
Wales: Taliesin
Northern Ireland: Faolan

I also have them have all their own surnames, but hdgjs that's a personal thing, they might all share Kirkland.

Hong Kong I have seen called Michael.

Ukraine I have seen called Yekatrina.

Sweden in fics seems to be called Berwald.

And my personal name for Australia actually came from a dream I had, oddly enough. I call him Rob (well Robert, but Aussie hates being full named).

And interestingly, I don't think Rome would have had a human name, at least not into Christianity came in. I don't think the ancient nations needed them as older beliefs wouldn't have seen them as something unnatural.

[identity profile] tarafishes.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Berwald is Sweden's canon name, last I checked.

The name Katyusha (or Yekaterina/Katya/etc) for Ukraine was actually lifted from the Japanese Wiki page ages ago - I remember helping [livejournal.com profile] lilichen translate it. Braginskaya is a female version of Russia's last name. :3

[identity profile] rebelkid18.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
At first, I though "Braginskaya" was a combination of "Braginsky" and "Arlovskaya", which are Russia's and Belarus' last names.

Well, in fanfiction, I've found people calling Germania Lukas and Aldrick -- and Holy Roman Empire...um, there's that Ludwig theory, of course xD Seychelles has been called Michelle; and Denmark is sometimes called Mathias; and Taiwan is unoriginally called Meimei (-snorts-). And Ukraine's been dubbed Katya by fans...

[identity profile] darkhue.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really stuck on Bjørn for Norway and Michele for Seychelles for some reason.

I also like Matthias for Denmark and either Marcus or Romulus for Rome, as people have already said. Or Julius, if only because Caesar's the first person many think of when they think of ancient Rome. HRE's usually Friedrich in my mind.

[identity profile] pcthirtyone.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Manuel González for Cuba. Manuel because I used to have a classmate from Cuba by that name, and González because there were like twenty thousand Gonzálezes before me in the yearbook when I lived in Florida and I always automatically think it when I think of Cuba as a result.

[identity profile] riot-of-flowers.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
XDDDDDDD That's the name we have given to our Chile <3 I just love these discussions, they come up with so many surprises.

[identity profile] sturmig.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno why, but Belgium is Klara/Clara to me and Netherlands is Jaan or somesuch.

As for Germany's last name, I have the vastly cheesy assumption that it is Börne, but that's just me shippin. I do assume that if any country named Germany, it would not have been Prussia but Poland or France.

[identity profile] malayu.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
My headcanon for Rome's name will always be Julius. Taiwan's usually called Mei Mei (chinese for little sister). Germania = Legolas? *brick'd*

[identity profile] rebelkid18.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Legolas FTW!

[identity profile] mc-brownie91.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
My headcanon on the subject:

1. Hong Kong = Lijuan
2. Germany = Ludwig Beilschimdt
3. Ukraine = Yakaterina
4. Tibet = Eh, idk
5. Denmark = Regner
6. Norway = Svein
7. Iceland = Frey
8. Belgium = Sara
9. Seychelles = Vivian

[identity profile] kotoriri.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
For Taiwan, I will always be set on Mei.

It's different from the nickname or title of "meimei"/little sister, but it's still a name. Plus I've seen many others call her that, and in the case of deciding human names, I go with what others use most frequently. As much as I'd like an original, more unique name for her, it would be too confusing for fiction readers if the authors kept using different names, plus I think it takes out of the reading experience itself. It seems like you're reading about a different character sometimes, then you forget who's who. Also, if you find an original name yourself, chances are it wouldn't catch on to the other writers who are used to using a different name for said character.

As for other characters:
Seychelles - I can never decide on, but going by everyone else here, I might start using "Michelle". XD
Belgium - Bella or Belle, I'm not sure either
Ukraine - Katyusha, because I really don't know why
Hong Kong - as much as I'd like an original name for him too, I go with Hong.
Germany's surname - Same as Gilbert's.

The rest of the characters I don't bother having headnames for, as I don't write them.

Yeah overall I'm thinking about how original names would affect fiction writers and readers, instead of how fitting a name is or what name a country would look like he/she would have. XD

Long comment is long, I apologize.

Cuba

[identity profile] riot-of-flowers.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
At [livejournal.com profile] latin_hetalia we always use historical figures' names for the fan characters we have made and that represent the latin-american countries.

Cuba's result was: Vicente de las Casas.

Vicente for Vicente García González, Santa Rita's Lion, a man who fought for Cuba's independency; and de las Casas for Bartolomé de las Casas, a priest, journalist, theologist who favored the natives.

The name is soft when pronounced but something soft suits a strong man like him.

Oooooh, you're right, and I like it.

I'd lurk moar on latin_hetalia but I'm fail at my heritage and I only speak English. XD hetalia_latina for me ohohoho~
yuuago: (Iceland - Cold outside)

[personal profile] yuuago 2009-12-22 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Still haven't decided on surnames, but so far I have

Iceland: Snorri
Norway: Erik
Denmark: Kris

Mostly I've been going to ones that are short and easy to spell, so I'll remember them.

[identity profile] coraltum.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
In my personal head canon...

Australia = Banjo Barton
Hong Kong = Jack Fang
Denmark = Søren Andersen
Norway = Olaf Amundsen
Iceland = Jónas Skallagrímsson
Belgium = Jeanine Magritte
Liechtenstein = Anna-Maria Rheinberger

That's all I've figured so far.
