Official Polish version of Hetalia manga

My publisher friend finally finished Polish version of Axis Powers Hetalia and it's going to book shops tommorow. If you are interested I can write a short review of it :)
I hope that we wont have situations like in Korea, actually thanks to Hollywood movies, like "Enigma" or "Defiance" we got used to strange image of our country in WWII so I don't expect bigger affair with APH even if our WWII history isn't something funny.

Anyway, I think that if it wont have problems here, it wont have them anywhere else. What do you think about publishing it in your country?

I would be extremely psyched to see it in America 83 Though I don't exactly have high hopes atm >.>

First, let me say congrats to Poland and his people for getting Hetalia published over there! :D

Second, the discussion thingy, I wonder if Hetalia will ever get licensed/published in the US. True, we have "freedom of speech" and we know how to "laugh at ourselves," but Americans are SO sensitive over the stupidest things! Hetalia teaches kids about WWII and other points of history, but SOME parent is going to complain about kids reading this because of the use of fascism and references to Nazis, and there have been some swastikas thrown in there, and boom! Hetalia is the new "controversial comic book!" on the evening news. America today is a place when you have to call "Christmas" parties "Holiday" parties so that no one feels left out (I know people with different or no religions and they don't care what it's called), the Pledge of Allegiance is being modified in some places, and where you can't really have "freedom of speech."

TL;DR - I think that America might license and publish Hetalia, but not without some sort of censor or whathaveyou.

Sorry this turned into a rant...orz

[identity profile] qualapec.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think, more than anything else, people would basically complain about how Germany isn't vilified. They wouldn't come right out and say that, of course, but that would be the gist.

Hopefully it would stay under the radar, but if FOX put their hive mind to it it could be the new "SEX-Box 360".

That's not even counting the people who would be offended at America's portrayal. I imagine people who would find The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, or South Park hilarious would be offended by America. We're funny and hypocritical like that XD

I really hope that an American company picks it up. Despite a lot of people's fears, no one really gets on the case of manga over here for things like that (Hellsing, anyone?).

Our matter more in lies in the fact that the current American anime/manga industry is struggling, so a lot of companies are only picking up super cheap licenses or really major major titles that run in Shounen Jump and the like.

I hope that manga companies over here notice the LARGE influx of Hetalia cosplayers at conventions and see it as a viable title to license. I mean, at AnimeFest Dallas, there was more Hetalia cosplayers than Naruto or Bleach- and so many people had no idea what we were from.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Word. The times of censoring manga and anime is in the past. The only stuff that gets censored now is the stuff that actually gets put on television, and even then '4kidsing' things is far less common than it used to be.

I feel like people are really worried about this kind of thing without reason.

I'm glad and pleasantly surprised that it was published in Poland before being published in the US :)

If it was published in the US...I don't know. One of my recurring nightmares is FOX News deciding to pitch a bitch about it. I can just fucking imagine what Glenn Beck would say about it...

:) Now, then I could only hope what Stuart or Colbert would say about FOX picking on a children's comic book, so it'd be cool XD

Ever so slightly off topic...but I would be VERY curious to see how it would be received in Germany (or Italy for that matter).

[identity profile] seraphoftales.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more apprehensive really that the fanbase might... explode... I mean, not that more fans are a bad thing. But large popularity might equal an equal amount of criticism. Especially with the topic of WWII.

Make no mistake that I want to buy the comic myself. The only possible place I could ever get it from would be my local japan town. And that's pretty far. So yeah. I'd love to see it published here in America.

Ah... I dunno. Mixed feelings.

[identity profile] rebornhayatofan.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
i agree!

[identity profile] jjblue1.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think someone will be brave enough to print it in Italy.
Manga and anime (who, despite the large and by now old fanbase, are still considered targeted 'for small kids') are the favorite target of a hate campain made by psycologists and media who also rarely have a sense of humour. Also there's a lot of people who's still sensitive about WW2 issues so, even if I would love to read it in my language, I don't even want to think at what will happen, were media to find out about it. -_-

[identity profile] kimbnr.livejournal.com 2009-11-14 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree - and I don't even want to find out what some people could say about the character of Italy or the fact that there are two Italies.

Wow, lucky you guys! Super congrats on that. :D

I wish it would get published in the US, but at the same time I'm worried. All it takes is one sensitive mother crying about a "controversial comic book" she just happened to find while tidying up her children's rooms--the media does the rest of the work.
Then again, god knows what the chances of a giant controversy are. Could be me being paranoid, but still. :S

[identity profile] kasumicc.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, one thing is the controversy generated from some sensible groups. Another different thing is how much they're actually taken into account.
I mean, lots of people still see Harry Potter as a devilish thing; but that certainly hasn't affected the saga's popularity at all xD

[identity profile] ninja-nutjob.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm of the opinion that a Canadian release is likely...it's getting huge love here, and what with our open-mindedness (and amazingly accurate self-image lol) Hetalia will hopefully be in mapletastic bookstores someday~

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Are there a lot of manga companies that release exclusively in Canada? I was under the impression that at least a huge majority of manga, if not all, was jointly released in Canada and America.

Wow that's really great to get it published in Poland, to be honest, I would never expected to appear there. I really hope they do that in Holland, but chances are small. We don't really have that much manga and anime being in stores anyway so i'm already happy if it's published in English.

DId you know the publisher who did the translating and licensing?

[identity profile] awww-applesauce.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I personally would love to get it in English~ and have it in America but I fear it like the other American's in this post have said. Lately all the news does is bitch about one thing or another, on top of all that the news is completely biased. That freedom of speech thing only works if your a news caster.

Look at the band Innerparty System. They came out with a video for their song "Don't stop" media threw a btich fit and they created a new one. The original had to do with the media and pretty much how they play the "god" on TV. = 3= Sad but true.

Anyways I would love to have it in English, but I'm not sure it would get published due to WW2 conroversy. Though With all the WW2 war movies I'm curious if they would do it.

[identity profile] 23luxuries.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
As interesting as it would be to see the entire nation up in arms about a comic book, if they haven't paid any attention to the large amounts of highly innapropriate hard yaoi or violent manga (Hellsing being mentioned :D) already translated, they won't give a crap about this one.
I do however have conflicting thoughts on a translation. I would love for it to see success, but at the same time, I'm really into Hetalia and its devoted group of fans, and generally when things get popular, they don't feel as special anymore. I feel like we have not only a love of a really cool manga, but also an interest in history and world unity. Maybe its selfish of me, but I don't want to lose sight of that.

[identity profile] flo-bizet.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say, you read my thoughts EXACTLY! Seriously, me and the only hetalia fan I know (as in personally, in my town) think it would be HILARIOUS to see the media here go crazy over something so silly! We thought about sending it to the Daily Show or the Colbert Report, but that idea lasted all of five seconds for obvious reasons. XP

Anyway, I, too, kind of want to keep this to where it's just us. I mean, the fandom's already exploded thanks to the anime, but... I don't know, I feel selfish and childish because of these thoughts! >_

[identity profile] animedutchess.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, Poland is so lucky! That's so awesome...

I'd love it published in America, but...yah know...controversy and whatnot. And of course, the best way to make people read something is to tell them NOT to.

But still. Crossing my fingers for an American release.

[identity profile] lacus-spei.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
If Hetalia is ever published in America, it'd be awesome for it to somehow come to Australia. But it probably won't. D:

Anyway, does the Polish translation carry over the nuances of the character's speech, like Sweden's mumbling? If there's ever an English translation, hopefully the translators will read the scanlations and carry that over. But I'd still read it if it doesn't. :)

[identity profile] usagiasakura.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
As fun as it would be to see the US media going crazy...

Several people have already made a good point that while it's true that Americans tend to be over-sensitive about a lot of things, if Hellsing hasn't been noticed (haven't read it but I've heard enough of it to know it could cause quite a stir), this probably won't either. But then because of stuff like the risk of controversy, I've all but given up hope of a US release for Hetalia. It would be neat if something like that happened, but... at the same time, perhaps it's better this way.

And on a miscellaneous note, if Glenn Beck does a rant on Hetalia, then I might be in trouble for numerous reasons - one of them being that I think my grandparents watch Fox News. >.>;

[identity profile] panzerfrau.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
No NARESZCIE.

[identity profile] mitsukirox101.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Like, totally lucky Poland :D In my country there is too much internal conflict to care for a tiny comic where it's not in so lol

But I wouldn't suggest it in America, just because it doesn't make the Axis Powers the "very evil bad guys", after hetalia i just don't like that, it's not like everyone is bad D:

but yeah basically same as other comments

[identity profile] mitsukirox101.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
but if we want english, I do wonder about Australia and England (not really sure on england though) but it's a thought

[identity profile] vysnia-cerasus.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be nice to see it make it here, if only to have a legal and nice copy of the manga and the anime DVDs in my own room. Sadly, I doubt it'll happen for quite a while.

FUNimation was considering Hetalia, but rejected the license due to the "Hetalia" part (supposedly they were to call it just "Hetalia" until they realized what a slur the name sounded like) and supposedly due to the BL reputation from what I've heard other places, and I remember someone in a past thread on the community said that once one company rejects the license for controversies, others will reject it. Media Blasters would be interesting, but there's the chance of them dropping the series if it doesn't sell enough and it never being completed over here.

The manga might be a tricky deal too. I could MAYBE see Del Rey getting it if they'd dare, but it would probably be a shrink-wrapped release due to the "controversies".

I was amazed when I first heard murmurs of Hetalia being published in Poland, as it's pretty cool for one other country to get some version of it outside of Japan.

[identity profile] puutarhalapio.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
It would be awesome to get Hetalia in Finnish. I'm sure though that ppl would get mad about Sweden calling Finland his wife and such, but even more they would be mad about Russia's doings because older ppl still seems to be afraid of Russia.

[identity profile] wackyquest.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
And so the time has come to ride up North and plunder Polish manga shops!
Seriously, guys, you are like totally awesome! I am tempted to go for it, just for the language cuteness.
