[Fanart] WWI: The Exciting Prequel!

Title: World War I sketchdump Part I
Author/Artist: C'est moi.
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Um. A lot of them. XD;
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Image-heavy; utterly spastic artwork
Summary: So hey! Hey kids. Who here can tell me what caused World War One?

If you answered "the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand", congratulations! You are WRONG.
Or rather, not entirely right.

Truthfully, there were a whole mess o' problems leading up to global conflict by the end of the 1800s, not the least of which was industrialization, specifically in countries which were not the UK.

See, right about the time America was getting electrified...

...The German Empire (which included Prussia, har har) was going through a major economic boom of its own. For serious, look at these isolated statistics and be amazed. What's more, since Germany industrialized after England, they were able to take notes of everything that failed and design their own system to be more efficient.
This, plus the Kaiser being a bit of a reckless overly ambitious putz, helped lead to an arms race.

Guess who was winning.

Friedrich Wilhelm II especially wanted to build up the navy, which none-too-subtly stepped on certain other countries' toes. There was a lot of bickering over just who really needed the bigger fleet. Countries, why must you really act so much like whiny people? D:

All that aside, political alliances at the time went completely and utterly bonkers once Otto von Bismarck's manipulative-yet-efficient foreign policies started falling apart. Observe:

Oh Europe, you so crazy.

So THEN when Franz Ferdinand got shot (and his wife was killed too, by the way, why doesn't anybody ever mention her?) and Serbia didn't answer Austria-Hungary's demands quickly enough, they counted on Germany to back them up and give them full support as promised in their alliance. (Gilbert must have felt so cheated.)

Russia, on the other hand, supported Serbia.

So then there was this whole escalation and elaborate falling-out all over the place and Germany would up exactly where Bismarck had worked so hard not to land it; that is, between a pissed-off Russia and France, and dammit Friedrich he even WARNED you about this crap and aargh.

Anyway. War declarations all around! Chaos! Posses!

(Bulgaria was there as well, but there's no Bulgaria-tan yet, so have some Prussia. Why not.)

The Triple Entente and special friends.

Oh, but what's that you say? Something seem strange about this lineup?

Indeed. Italy abandoned the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary, partially because it hoped to gain back some territories at the end of the war. More on this later. MUCH more.

Meanwhile, America was practicing its own very special brand of diplomacy in addressing the matter.

In fact, the States didn't even enter the war until the spring of 1917 and after much unwise provocation from Germany.

You guys. YOU GUYS. DON'T SINK AMERICA'S BATTLESHIPS. Or its regular-type ships. Or British passenger ships which happen to also have Americans on board. BAD IDEA.

But even then America was still somewhat torn about just how much of a role to take in a European conflict.

God, my country is messed up.

To be continued, uh, sometime soon when I have time to ink and scan the rest of these horrible things. Just...just promise to tell me when you're all sick of me, alright? I think I've lost all semblance of self control here, people. Ohgod.

Now, off to work on my other artsy projects some more. And maybe study. Yeah.

(Bulgaria was there as well, but there's no Bulgaria-tan yet, so have some Prussia. Why not.)
Actually, Bulgaria has appeared in a strip from Volume 1.
Let me rummage around my folders to see if I can find the strip.

But if I remember correctly, Bulgaria likes to hit N. Italy while Germany isn't looking...

[identity profile] gaviotas.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't Germany also send a message to Mexico, stating that if Mexico helped them, they would get their lands back from America? o Ao

Also, this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/MeltedPeep/WW4.jpg) made the whole post for me. (8

Awesome job, I never get tired of your edumucations.

[identity profile] jali-jali.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Never tired of your art dumps, bb! Really well-done as usual!!:D
Btw, if I'm not wrong, actually there's Bulgaria in the Hetalia vol.1 manga scan, it's not so clear though.

After checking this post (and related wikis), now I understand why Prussia was dissolved... The Kingdom was a disaster as an advisor...

(sorry Prussia fans)

[identity profile] ficcyomens.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
My sides, they are split! Oh, man. I don't even know where to start with this, because it's just all so utterly amazing. From the crazy alliance bit up there to America with his fingers in his ears because THAT SO TOTALLY HAPPENED.

In conclusion? A winnar is you!

[identity profile] flufie.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
You are so amazing. Suddenly WWI makes so much more sense.

I LOVE AMERICA'S FOREIGN POLICIES SO MUCH. Pretty consistently it's "let's ignore them until they blow up something of ours". The current war being an exception, of course.

[identity profile] mithrigil.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Made. Of. Win.

Especially the Lusitania.

[identity profile] degrees.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
