Cosplay question/ worry

I am currently going to be cosplaying as China (uniform version) for a anime con that's about a year away. What my main concern is...Will I offend people, especially those who are ethnically chinese outside of the anime con in my China cosplay? The only time I'll be leaving the convention is to the next door mall to pick up food/ a drink and going to and from the hotel to the convention center.

Have any of you who've cosplayed as a hetalia character or even uniformed China had any negative problems from the non-convention public? I don't mind changing if it could possibly be a problem, it's just an annoyance to change back after returning from the errand.

Sorry if my grammar is really really off. It's super late and my brain isn't functioning at the moment.

If this goes against the comm's rules please delete it D:.

I don't think the Chinese will be offended if you cosplay as China. Infact, they even like China-tan!

I believe these people (not just chinese people) have probably seen a colorful variety of cosplayers. Keep in mind people dress as the Millennium Organization from Hellsing and they're Nazis. So you should be pretty low key considering.

I want to cosplay as Russia so badly~ I am so short though X_X; 5'7'' at best lol

HEIGHT SUCKS

I'll be cosplaying Russia and I'm five foot five. I'm looking into getting platform boots.

It also helps that my girlfriend is about five feet tall and wants to play Lithuania ;) ;) ;).

[identity profile] mewy04.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS MEANS NOTHING. My Cold War Russia is 5'3 ish and a whole total of like 5 and a half pounds. 8D I throw her over my shoulder and walk around (which usually results in fangirl screams of ultimate joy). She's one of the more recognized Russias in the north Texas area.

It doesn't matter who you're cosplaying just so long as you own the character!

[identity profile] devillyangelx.livejournal.com 2009-08-06 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Chinese myself and I personally love the character of China-tan! So I don't think it should be a problem to cosplay as China-tan as long as you respect the character and the country it represents~ (:

i did uniform china at collosalcon last month and no one seemed to be too terribly offended. ( i actually had this vietnam vet comment on the military surplus shirt i'd modified. O_o )
I'd say take off the red armband when you're not in the actual con and you should be fine.

If this was a problem then everyone would be worried about cosplaying any Hetalia character. It should not be a problem. You're dressing up as a character. Besides I doubt those people would know that you're even being China in the first place. Normal people don't know about Hetalia.

Now if you want a Chinese perspective in this as well, I'm half Chinese. My mom's side is where my Chinese comes from and I can assure you that I know none of them would be insulted if you dressed up as China. Hell I'm gonna be cosplaying as China. XDDDDDD

you just made my day

Clearly, they are missing out.

Uniform China cosplayer here!!
I just cosplayed him last weekend at AFO, and I didn't run into any problems. Though the 20 of us walking to Mcdonalds in military cosplay attracted quite a bit of attention

Most people aren't going to know exactly who you are anyway unless they're familiar with Hetalia. The only thing I might suggest is removing the red armband if you're outside the con, just as a precaution. Though, I had mine on the whole day and still didn't have issues, so its up to you

[identity profile] badluckfollows.livejournal.com 2009-08-06 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, I've never cosplayed in military, just traditional. I'm Chinese myself, but if it was me, I wouldn't be offended at all. Just to be safe though, take off the red armband when you go out and it should be fine.

It shouldn't really be a problem. For Acen I went as Korea (including a giant 3 feet by 5 feet flag as a cape and I had no problems. (And I also went to a store that was a good 30 minutes away from the con as Korea minus the cape and I wasn't harassed/got people offended at all.) As some of the others have said, people near the con are bound to be already bombarded by more noticeable cosplays and won't really mind yours. =|

Hell, even my mom (who's Chinese) helped me make my Korea cosplay. :3

[identity profile] sucrose2071.livejournal.com 2009-08-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
actually, the uniforms in hetalia aren't that accurate to the actual WW2 uniforms, so there shouldn't be any problem, China's is a bit more accurate but I don't think people will really notice as long as you take off the arm band.~ lol Russia's real uniform looks like pajamas XD (my friend gave me one to modify because he collects replica military uniforms) XD

:\ Most of the people are ABC's anyways. At most if something's wrong with the outfit then someone might make the comment. (My dad, who was born in Hong Kong, made a comment on my Hetalia cosplay that Hong Kong's outfit is actually for a girl.....)

Yeah, most of us ABC's don't really care. Most of us are from Guangdong area or Taiwan anyways hahaha~

[identity profile] droopingwillow.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
This is an interesting question....hmm, if I dress up as traditional China, it won't be a problem since I'm ethnic Chinese (maybe people will think I'm going for some traditional arts classes) but PLA uniform will definitely get a lot of attention since I live in an area full of Chinese nationals and first gen immigrants.

Actually, I'm not sure I will have the guts since I'm not a Chinese national because I'm afraid of dealing with questions from strangers.

I personally won't have a problem with non-Chinese cosplaying but I'm a fan anyways.

If you're a Chinese national, will you have problems with me wearing the military uniform of your country??? (ethnic Chinese, foreign citizen)

[identity profile] taiyue.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, as i'm chinese, i would totally think it would be awesome, I'm even cosplaying the oriental version this fall! though i would be a bit pissed if the the cosplay looked so horribal it had to be intentional, but that's really all! :)

[identity profile] mewy04.livejournal.com 2009-08-24 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't have anything to worry about...at all... If there's a convention in town, I assure you everyone knows about it and have probably asked everyone about what's going on. By lunch time the strange looks will even stop!!

But seriously, you have nothing to worry about.

8'D
That wasnt the case with the con i went to once~
Me and a couple of friends went down the street to the chik-fil-a on the 2nd AND 3rd/last day of the con~ EVERYONE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT. Everytime we went, they always would ask with a scrunched up face, "Why are you wearing that?" or "Whats going on?" XD We would laugh and tell them though~

It was entertaining to tell them it was just down the street~
