Funimation's Hetalia: The Beautiful World (English Subtitled)

Hopefully someone posts the fansub here just in case. For now, here is English Subtitles from Funimation Entertainment. You have to be 18 and older to view this and live in North America to have access. Remember that every Friday at 3 PM EST, Funimation streams new episodes of Hetalia: TBW.

I hope that aside from the fansub version also the one from funimation gets posted somewhere for us fans not in North America- after having seen the past two episodes subbed by them, I'm curious as to how they will sub this episode.

It is pretty good. Different from the fansub I saw.

For example, the Engrish for Mochi America was suppose to say "It's okay. I'm an American!" That what was really said in the beginning of the Omochi strips. The fansubber mistranslated as "Meet again! I'm an American!"

I also noticed the fansubber didn't pick up on what Norway said when he was behind Denmark. Maybe his voice was too soft to pick up the dialogue.

Ah I noticed that mistake too- although I'm not surprised, it does sound a bit like "meet again", heh. But having read the Omochi strips I figured it was "it's okay".

Norway was talking pretty softly- I saw two fansubs, and in both of them what Norway said wasn't translated. Could it be that he was just mumbling?

A bit mumbling, yes. Even during the introductions, his voice was still low.

Funimation did translate what he said in that low voice, which he said that the group can smack Denmark as he was sitting with his legs open like that.

I am not sure on that. The last thing they uploaded were the Psycho-Pass PV videos. Plus the English Subtitled episodes of Hetalia: The Beautiful World is still an open viewing, not just limited to Elite Subscriptions. So I don't think they would stop uploading other recent simulcasts on YouTube.

Funimation also used a more correct Italian compared to the fansub.
The fansub use: "dolce" (= 1 sweet, sweetness) while funimation uses "dolci" (sweets) which is more correct as behind italy there are more than 1 sweet... though yes, the Japanese dub says "dolce". It's not the first time the Japanese version forgets to turn into plural Italian words...
Anyway both Funimantion and fansubs miss to use the article in front of dolce/dolci, which in Italian is pretty important but I guess since it's a random Italian world inserted in an English sentence it doesn't matter much...

*nods* Really. I guess they opted for a translation that was less litteral and more correct.
Italian in APH is often wrong... not mentioning Mochi Italy in this episode made a totally unnecessary pause between the words "Sei americano?" making it sound like "Sei.............. americano?" "Are you.............. American?" that make the sentence lose all the emphasis that in Italian implies the sentence is interrogative so that you can even mistake it for a statement: "You are.............. American!"
(In Italian it's the tone that tells you if the sentence is interrogative or not. If you fail to get it right your question will sound like a statement.)

... and I apologize for this boring explanation about Italian but really, sometimes the Italian used in APH really makes me cringe...

Considering the mochi segments are based on the Omochi strips themselves, the gratuitous Engrish (http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/files/amemo1.jpg) and Italian (http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/files/omoti2.jpg) in the Hetalia series, it is to be expected to have certain things incorrect.

Yeah, guess they wanted to be true to source material despite how certain parts of other foreign language may be incorrect. It might just be straight played for laughs and not to be taken seriously, but even then, small details can make people irked. Himaruya did mentioned that the English Mochi America is speaking is just nonsense, no special meaning behind it.

Surprised to hear from you that Funimation used the correct plural term of sweets in Italian. I know maybe a company like Funimation may have more knowledge and privileges than fansubbers try to make it out in translating certain languages, but still makes me feel happy that they did a pretty good job then for this episode.

Well, I wasn't bothered by the whole mochi thing. Even if Mochi Italy saying 'dolce' out of nowhere is weird... well he's a mochi. My dolce comment comes from when 'dolce' is used by Italy when they're at the newspaper club. He suggests they'll have a 'merenda' ('snack/snack time') and then he says 'Dolci are good!' (Sweets are good!) while behind him there's the picture of 4 things that can be labelled sweets.
If you instead of 'Dolci' use 'Dolce' the sentence can get two meanings, neither of them particularly fitting:
- 1 sweet is good (which seems to contrasts with the picture behind him)
- what is sweet/sweetness is good (which feel rather random to say)

Note that since the article is missing if I were to make a direct translation I would pick up the second sentence, which is likely not what the original text was supposed to mean, because in italian to get the first one you NEED to use the article 'un' (a/one) in front of the noun 'dolce'.
In a dialogue you can skip the article in the second sentence if certain conditions are met. It wouldn't be grammatically correct Italian but, when speaking, you're allowed to ignore some grammar rules here and there.


And yes, Funimation did a good job with the random Italian here. I wasn't expecting it so it made me happy.

Not at all, I honestly find it interesting- I can talk quiet bit about translations or language uses, epspecially differences in my own language and English, heh. ^_^

And you're not alone on the cringing part- Hetalia isn't all that accurate. ^_^;

Yep, I've heard people from other countries complaining about it. I've even been tempted to list all that I know wasn't accurate but then I figured people wouldn't be really interested as APH's goal isn't really to be educational but to be funny...
