Hello everyone!
I just came back from Anime USA, where I once again presented my "Hetalia, Learn to Laugh at Yourself or We'll Do it for You" panel. Had a full house again, and the attendees there were terrific.

I haven't used LJ in ages, but many attendees mentioned the Hetalia LJ community during the panel so I thought I'd drop in and check it out. You guys sound awesome.

My name's J-F and I cosplay my own OC of Quebec. You might have seen me with a shovel strapped to my back and a hockey stick for my flag pole.

Looking forward to cool discussions here and more installments of my panel and Hetalia stand-up comedy in the future. Looks like Katsucon has good odds of featuring either or both.

That sounds like an awesome OC! Do you have any pictures you're willing to share?

Certainly! Not as many as I'd like. I always forget to get my give my new costumes a proper photoshoot.

I don't have any artwork (that's not really my specialty) but I love to cosplay him. I play him as a goofball who keeps saying jokes that no other country gets, and he's also compulsive gambler who cheats on welfare. I chose these quirks because I'm Quebecois myself and I know this for a fact about my people! Of course he also keeps trying to move out of Canada's house but changes his mind every two seconds.

That is wonderful in every way. I love the shovel! When you said that, I was picturing a metal one for digging holes, so I was kind of confused. XD But I love it! <3

One of my favorite things about Hetalia is the really great original characters like this that you come across. Thanks for sharing!

My first version actually did have a metal shovel, but that went against certain con policies, and it's not what I was trying to convey anyway. That plastic snow shovel is exactly what I had in mind. A snow shovel certainly represents Quebecquer culture well! My decision was inspired by a bit in a comedy routine by Martin Petit.

I agree about the colorful OC that we find out there. This was one of the arguments we discussed at my panel yesterday: Hetalia as a show cannot possibly cover every single culture in present and past history. But its most wonderful purpose is precisely to open up the door for all of us to do just that, among ourselves. We get to educate one another and have fun with it.

Someone at the panel also brought up a very interesting OC of Alaska she created. I liked her vision very much.

Of course he also keeps trying to move out of Canada's house but changes his mind every two seconds.

I LOVE THIS! Dare I ask the nature of their relationship? Brothers who only sometimes get along?

And now I want to make an OC of Alta California. XDDD Hmm...

Thank you! Yes, I do treat them as half-brothers. Quebec was actually the original Canada, raised by daddy France (shudder), who eventually abandoned him when England charged up the hill and became his new foster daddy (shuddershudder). From this uncomfortable parenting was given birth another altogether different creature, who took on the name and identity of Canada. He grew so big that Quebec ended up with an identity crisis, not knowing whether he should still call himself Canada now that his little brother had essentially taken up the mantle. There's definitely some love/hate going on. And all of this is perfectly historically relevant.

Oh, and I forgot one detail about Quebec: he constantly pesters America about stealing Florida away from him.

How would you make your Alta California?

LOTS of research! I was born and raised in California, and yet I don't recall hearing anything about Alta California OR Las Californias in history class, and I probably need to read up on both. And then get more information on Hetalia's Spain for some ideas regarding personality... and on Prussia to see if there's anything special I need to know about ex-nations...

Pretty much all I have at this point is "she's a cattle rancher".

(And thanks! The picture changes now and then, but the lyrics stay the same--it's apparently been my motto since high school.)

I'm eager to learn the product of your research. I know so very little about the different regions of Mexico, both present-day and historically.

But Spain's actions in the New World is an object of fascination for me. Mainly because I strongly believe in the kind, friendly and fun-loving nature of Spain as depicted in Hetalia, and yet here you've got the character committing acts of genocide in Mesoamerica. How this duality can coexist in the nature of Spain makes the whole thing very interesting and a bit tragic. Both as a character and as a country.

In fact the idea has inspired me for a piece of art that I might do if I deign to ply my so-so skills to paper one day.

Do cosplay pictures count? I rarely have time to draw or write anything that isn't my own original work, so I probably won't have a whole lot to share on this comm after all, sadly.
But it sounds like "nationslash" might be the one I'd like to join for random Hetalia-themed banter, am I right? Will I see most of you on there, too?

Yes, I wouldn't post pics of my Quebec OC as their own thread here. But for instance I've made a Prussia commission for a client (War of Austrian Succession version) and I might want to show it (she got a fabulous pose and location with it the other day that just needs to be seen). Looking forward to hopefully more Hetalia commissions in the future, too. Love those character designs.

I think the mods of this comm changed the settings so there's nothing to worry...

Thanks. But I meant stuff like [lj-user]. Didn't there used to be a tag that automatically created a link to another LJ user? I still know how to make standard anchor [a href] links (I spent over 12 years working as a programmer before I became an artist) but it's those special LJ ones that I'm too rusty to remember right now. The ones you used to make links out of "lifeishetalia" and "captalia" in your previous reply. Forgot how to make those [lj-cut], too.

Just out of curiosity, what was your panel about?

I talk about the sociological impact of the series. About whether detractors are right in saying that it promotes ill-minded stereotypes and inter-cultural hatred, or whether it can foster a deeper understanding and love of our differences.

Obviously, I'm of the latter disposition. And everyone who comes to the panel usually is, too! We always get lots of very neat topics going, such as what topics are touchier than others, how to address them, what are some of the mistakes the fandom has made to give itself a bad image, examples of positive personal growth incurred because of Hetalia.

For instance, every time I do this panel we always end up talking about Korea and Native America, two very fascinating and sensitive topics.

Mm. I have some friends that host similar panels, except we call it Hetalia 101 and address things like flag etiquette and military gestures, things that give them fandom a bad name.
Next time, though, I can suggest we discuss some of your topics too.

No prob! You have a good panel name for a good topic. I think we definitely need panels out there like the one you mention.
I wanted to make sure that mine came off as more of a "Hetalia for connoisseurs" though. So I probably wouldn't want something like "101" attached to mine. Sounds like we're talking about similar topics but with a few key differences. It's great to have variety like that in the different Hetalia panels! (especially since there are about two or three at EACH con these days! XD)

Awesome! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that many good ones will make it into the schedule. Especially my Hetalia stand-up comedy: I wrote it a few months ago and it has never been performed! I'm real eager to show it off. Maybe you can be one of my ~~guinea pigs~~ captivated audience.

My boyfriend and I were actually at the panel (he helped with your Canada jokes by pointing out the empty seat next to us, hahaha) and we both had a wonderful time. I hope we are able to add Katsucon to the list of cons we attend yearly and to see you around the various Hetalia comms here on LJ! :D

Hi there! Nice to see a familiar cyber-face! Glad you had a great time. I did, too. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't enjoy it. It was wonderful to see the level of involvement of the audience. There were even more raised hands than at AnimeNEXT, and the attendance there was at least twice as big!
