[Scanlation] These things happen a lot.

It's about Japan designing a New Year's postcard for China for next year! Original post is here.

China, who loves good luck and fortune,
puts so much lucky items in his designs that they end up looking like this.
The posters you see around Chinatown look rather cute.

T/N: China sprinkles a lot of Chinese words in his speech, but I can't figure out a way to incorporate that into the translation. Also I have red envelopes with Hello Kitty on them, it's true...

[identity profile] frostwhisker.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the scanlation.

I love how the design hardly changed pff!

[identity profile] asiaisaru.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, yeah the designs for these kind of things usually come in only a few variations. It's like, 寿, 喜, upside-down 福, 恭喜发财, or 年年有“鱼” and stuff along the lines of that. (I'm chinese yay). ive seen enough of this stuff in the first five years of my life to last for the next 70. ^^'

[identity profile] charlzway.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA

This is so effin' true, there's soooo many fortune designs with Hello Kitty on them I don't even XD

[identity profile] charlzway.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ah right, thank you for the scanlation! ♥

[identity profile] megumitan.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
But at least they smell good :DD (Okay, maybe that's just me) I still put mine under my pillow :D

THank you so much for scanlating <3

[identity profile] charlzway.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I... don't really know how they smell xD I usually just wonder why the designers liked to put Hello Kitty on the postcards, the fortune signs and red packets for every single occasion. That or it's just any random Disney character like Mickey Mouse for the Year of the Rat (even though he's technically a mouse...) and Donald Duck for er, Year of the Rooster.

of course, this strip could explain that entirely lol

[identity profile] megumitan.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
They kind of smell like incense, but I don't mind it because it's in small amounts.

And loool probably because it's really cute and if it's cute who cares about copyright infringement xDD

oh china... *sigh* well technically I'm from Taiwan but yet again...

[identity profile] charlzway.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
T-They do? Okay, I obviously don't really pay attention to these things but then again, I'm not big on chinese new year... ^^;

I think it's more like "who cares about copyright infringement?" regardless xD

....I'm not from China either...

[identity profile] megumitan.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my, I need to get more icons...

Haha yeah, but I don't really celebrate Chinese New Year to such an extent either xD

Ahahahaahaha so so true xDD

Wait, where are you from? I'm technically from the U.S. but I have double citizenship so I say I'm from Taiwan OTZ xD

[identity profile] fluffcloud.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they do smell faintly of incense. Sort of like stuff you get from a Chinese temple. I've got a drawer full of red packets. There are shibui ones though.

[identity profile] fluffcloud.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Chinese but also not from China lols

I went to a Taiwanese restaurant today and ate Taiwanese food. They had stinky tofu.

But I'm not Taiwanese.

[identity profile] pookie-mookie94.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the scan!

This is amazing, and I love how the designs all look so familiar, cos', they do! I like how China is trying to be cool and hip... anyway, how uses hip?!

Love the last two panels. :)

[identity profile] chewy-rouyale.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the scan. ♥♥
Lol there's so much happening in the end design.

[identity profile] ventusbdaplayer.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I got many Ang Paos (Red packets) with Hello Kitty on them from my relatives every year. No difference, and my parents does the same. There's a huge box of them in my house, about a quarter of them are all Hello Kitties! XD

[identity profile] wafflesama.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this is so accurate. Every year on Chinese New Year at least a quater of the red packets I recieve has Hello Kitty on 'em. xD

[identity profile] wafflesama.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
And thank you for the translation!

[identity profile] shibbyone.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like... I am one of the first people to comment who isn't Asian... as if that's a bad thing lol well my best friend from home who's Chinese always gets very plain envelopes. She complained about it once when we were young. I then hit her.

We have a strange friendship.

ANYWAY this is adorable, oh China, it doesn't matter that you're immortal and you had a huge input into the development of Western culture, you are just 12 years old. ♥

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who thinks that China has a similar personality to Maito Gai? Something about the 'springtime of youth' and the 'I must be hip~' just reminds me of it.

Chinese New Year's is awesome c: The red envelopes really are cool!~

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, oh, I mean, they are "hip".

Also, thank you kindly for scanlating! :)

[identity profile] digi-smile.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No, when he said that i immediatly thought of Guy and Rock Lee it made me giggle.

[identity profile] kamikazemusume.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the design is somewhat different, China, at least give Japan that much credit. xD

Thank you for the scanlation!

[identity profile] pixelmicrocat.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
China, you'll always be young!! ;O;
I find those kind of designs rather cute, actually <3 Before I could stop myself, I ended up collecting them lol.

[identity profile] naevai.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like that China's only instruction at first is to make it cool.
Needs to be about 20% cooler.

[identity profile] yosoyjuice.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this reference.

[identity profile] fluffcloud.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think I have mentioned before on the nichu comm about Yao's tacky sense of decor. Someone should design more tasteful New Year stuff.

Assuming the old man in the second panel is Sh*natty, his surname is 陳?

[identity profile] fluffcloud.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Has his name been mentioned before or it is a new reveal?

I happened to hate Sh*natty, I think it was mentioned in the CD drama that his hometown is Beijing? I assume he's a normal human?

[identity profile] pyrolynx.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me so much of the red envelopes I get from some relatives during New Year's...or used to....

[identity profile] mintbun.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I remember this fancy red envelopes. xD I would rarely get Hello Kitty designed ones, though. Usually just plain. But yes, the designs tend to be very similar.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
...Oh China, you are so hilarious and I love you.

[identity profile] nodokaotonashi.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to assume those are exactly the same models we will find in any Chinese restaurant. I recall mine had some pandas on it. Yeah, even in France.

[identity profile] usamisa52.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, the character that is labeled "youth" is "xi"
"Xi" is the character that means "to favor", so it's another good luck thing.

[identity profile] yanagiken.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually... 'xi' means to favour when it's used as a verb, but when it's used alone on New Year stuff, it means happiness. :)

[identity profile] usamisa52.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, my bad XD I fail at Chinese ORL's.

[identity profile] dusmarais.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
The red pocket thing is SO true.

[identity profile] kikikai.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh~ So true. I still remember getting a lot of red pocket money with Hello Kitty and Doraemon on them...one of them said 'Happy New Year' in English but spelled Year wrong =/

[identity profile] silvera88.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the translation :)

[identity profile] yosoyjuice.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the translation~!

[identity profile] webcomix.livejournal.com 2011-10-28 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone once gave me McDonald brand laisee packets...

Funnily enough, the ones I liked the most as a kid were the "classy" ones. Those that looked really traditional/had nice art on them as opposed to the cutesy Hello Kitty or comical animal-of-the-year cartoons. A couple in particular that I remember were gold packets with orange and white koi printed on them.

[identity profile] fluffcloud.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe you must be Cantonese since you call them laisee. I call it something else.

Then I remembered you're from HK ;)

[identity profile] webcomix.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Gung hei fat choi, laisee dou loi...

Hold on, I'm memorable now?? O.O

[identity profile] kecen.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder why Japan goes through with it if China is so particular. Young, cool, hip...yangu ando nau. A pair of gumpas.
Man those kitties are creepy. I've googled "Hello Kitty Red Envelope" and it turns up pictures of Kitty wearing kimono.

Thanks for the Scanlation~!

[identity profile] glittertech.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only person here who hasn't celebrated Chinese New Year?
