Historical Notes
What are they talking about?

During the siege of Orleans, only a loose blockade boarded around the city which allowed supplies in and out without much notice and/or care by the English who guarded around the city. However, when four forts were built on the Sologne and Beauce side of the city, the citizens of Orleans realized how little their king could aid them and how much disaster their own soldiers would come to if they faced their English captors.

So, what to do? No one wished to surrender a city so vital, but no one wished to starve to death either. With no other plausible course of action, the citizens decided to appeal to the sympathies of the Duke of Burgundy, who, though siding with the English, was related to the Royal House of France. However, his sympathies relied on the Duke of Bedford agreeing with this appeal, but he conveniently died by a “piece of artillery” being flung through him.

Suffice to say, the city of Orleans was out of options, and in the eyes of the citizens, doomed to fall to the English.
