Hetalia at Comiket 80

Reading Sankaku Complex (a website about manga and anime) I came across a translation from 2ch where they were calculating what would be the most popular things at Comiket 80 taking into account the relation of circles / fandom that appears on the event catalog.

According to the first data, the relation of circles by fandom is as follows:

Touhou – 2808
Hetalia – 1302
Basara – 870
Reborn – 572
VOCALOID – 558
Gintama – 486
Prince of Tennis – 468
IdolMaster – 418
Inazuma Eleven – 408
Durarara - 380
Lyrical Nanoha - 370
Nintama Rantaro – 308
One Piece – 288
NARUTO – 286
K-ON! – 246
Madoka – 236
FMA – 202
Big Windup! – 200
BLEACH – 181
Gundam 00 – 178
Code Geass – 150

Hetalia is actually the 2nd fandom with more doujinshis at the event. It's good to know that Hetalia's popularity is still going strong.

Wow, I'm surprised that Durarara!! and Madoka are so low. Well, I guess Madoka is new, and you can only do so many Shizaya doujins before you get bored and Drrr!! fandom doesn't seem to be interested in anything else. I'm surprised Tiger and Bunny isn't listed, too, but again, it's new. And whoa, K-ON! is so low? That surprises me.

Also, assuming "Basara" means Sengoku Basara, wow, it's really had some staying power. Or a resurgence due to season 2 coming out recently.

As for the actual topic relevant to this comm, in checking Toranoana I'm not surprised, but this definitely makes me happy!

I completely forgot about the movie! Oops!

Well yeah definitely not, it seems like it's just the ones that have a particularly large number of circles putting out. I'm just surprised that Tiger and Bunny isn't big enough to be on here yet, since it's really spiked in popularity.

Tiger and Bunny is still new enough that I don't think it's on there. People are just starting to do stuff for it (well, A LOT of people). I'd say it will have rocketed up the list by winter comiket!

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring too!

Hopefully I'll have seen it by then =|

The thing with Comiket and these lists is that...they're a bit deceiving. When you sign up for Comiket, you sign up with just one fandom regardless of how many other fandoms you offer among your doujins, and this is what's reflected on these lists. While tons of Hetalia circles have been doing T&B doujinshi, they still signed up as Hetalia circles for Summer Comiket. I'd say it won't be until Winter Comiket, where circles will effectively move to T&B, that we'll see it appearing on the list.

I had heard about that before. I think it's why Durarara!! looked so huge at one Comiket; a bunch of circles signed up as Durarara!! circles, but drifted eventually because how much Shizaya does the world really need? And that fandom seems unwilling to explore other options.

I'm still a bit surprised re; T&B, though, given how low the low numbers on this thing are.

I'm so happy to see it on this list even though I've been out of the loop with the fandom for a long time ;w;

I'm surprised One Piece is so low compared to Hetalia ;o; /wants precious ZoLu

I am very surprised at how low some of these are. I have never hear of Touhou as well, would anyone care to give a short summary of what that story is about?

Never mind, clearly I have not seen "Touhou" spell like this. However, I am still very surprised at how low some of the other ones are.

Honestly not a surprise. When I lived in Japan it was always the largest section in the doujin area. Some of the older circles have left, but new ones are coming in at full force. The entire A-C section was mainly Hetalia, with a few of series like Code Geass and Reborn sprinkling in here and there. I'm not sure which pairing is still the largest, but when I was there it was most definitely USUK, with almost all the A's being devoted to it. A few UKJP and GerIta as well. I was amazed that the pairings that're more popular in the Western fandom (like FrUK and the Cold War pair) were hardly there at all.

I hope this year it's a little more varied.

I check Toranoana regularly and USUK and UKJP seem to be about even. It's hard telling what the most popular ship actually is. My guess is that it fluctuates between the two.
