[Scanlation] Volume 4 - Hetalia Food Column

Translation & Scans: [livejournal.com profile] hikari_kaitou
Typesetting: [livejournal.com profile] jammerlea

Fun food facts for everyone! 9 pages worth!

Sorry if the backgrounds look funny. It was hard to do these with that patterned background.

Jam's note: Himaruya originally wrote "Prosit" here, which is another form of "cheers" in German, but it was suggested to me to change it to "Prost", which is more commonly used. If anyone (especially German speakers) want to add in their preference, I'll see if I should change it or not.

Oh the infamy of America's fast food places. Oh well it's still good. Anyway thank you for uploading this and translating. It was fun reading the different entries. Some I knew like China being the home of noodles and others like the potato story I didn't.

pffft, this made me laugh more that i should have. and the thing about eating stuff in china is so true.

so many interesting facts in one sitting (o3o)~
thanks so much for scanlating all this! (^.^)

China's page made me laugh. That is very true. Chinese don't seem to be picky with food. I'm not Chinese, but Vietnamese food definitely had influence from Chinese food. This makes me think of that stereotype that Asians eat dogs/cats. I remember seeing that food show where this guy goes around to eat "bizard food", including bees and cobras.

I think it kind of sad that of all things to fight for, England and France fight for wine...

I love pasta because you can buy the pretty ones :D. It's just sad that Italian food is so full of cheese and wheat that makes people like me feel fat when done eating the delicious cuisine :(.

Aw, thanks for translating all of this stuff! It was really interesting to read, hurr.

Ahh so thats why they put the nori in the inside when i buy sushi at the store. I always wondered why they did it so funny XD. TY ALL! Oh and i will be posting that chinese quote on my facebook. It made me lol soo hard.

[identity profile] kasumicc.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 07:44 am (UTC)(link)

I remember reading about the potato thing with Fritz somewhere... Now I expect fancomics of that.

Thanks for the translations~

I'm not completely sure about China, but I know in Korea, there are still some places that sell dog to eat. Which is weird, because is was considered old fashioned even when my aunt was a girl, and everyone in Seoul seems to have a tiny toy dog running around.

Also, idk, I wonder if all Himaruya ever has to eat when he comes to America is fast food? Most of the meals that are made at home take hours to make.

And plus, the "quick and easy" American recipes popular today weren't invented until around the turn of the 20th century. Hamburgers weren't even in America until some dude took to smooshing together all the leftover pieces of meat, frying them, and then selling them on the street in the 1880s. Even in the pioneer days, and the days of the "wild west", people spent ridiculous of time making food. The quicker recipes were thrown together from leftovers. Or else, they were preserved food, like salted pork and hardtack.

/lolhistory sorry

Simplicity is great <33 I always just have Salt on my eggs, and just meat and cheese in my burgers XD (It's even MORE delicious if it's beef, cheese, and BACON!)

Y'know it's weird, I had no idea that the "seaweed on the inside" was just an American thing XD I tried seaweed by itself once (long before I tried sushi) and I actually thought it was good! It just...had a funny after-taste. (Not a fan of green tea either. Iced Tea that's super sugary is the way to go!)

Anyway, this was awesome so thanks for sharing! (I feel like such a stalker- but- OMG I KNOW WHAT HIMARUYA'S FAVORITE PASTA IS NOW!! 8D It was always my favorite too.. :'D )

[identity profile] hausdracheyuka.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
Never thought there was so much to know about the history of food :D

XD Old man Fritz knows how to make Prussia eat the "Devil's fruit" well enough ;)
And the beer XD

Oh, I'm german and I think "Prost" is more fitting than "Prosit" because Prosit is what they say in Bavaria. I believe a lot of people only now about Bavaria, the Oktoberfest and the beer of Bavaria (which I personally don't like at all >.<) when it comes to Germany, so "Prosit" may be known to more of them.
But you are right, in fact "Prost" is more common. We say it in Berlin, in Hamburg and here in Cologne :D

"By the way, when New Yorkers go to Starbucks, they order customized coffees with super-long names that sound like incantations. I always ask for something simple when I go, though..."

THIIIIS. Every morning I'm like "tall mocha" and the person behind me is invariably like "grande iced soy double-double whipless mochaccino half caf (http://www.homestarrunner.com/tgs6.html) with whip in a venti cup" and I'm astonished. I'm like, how long did it take you to discover you liked all that crap? How many "mmmm, something's missing" coffees did you go through? And how on earth do you remember it?! I don't even know what half that stuff is; I'm happy with my chocolate coffee.

Americans are also like "Ew, seaweed? That stuff in the ocean?! How can you eat that?!" without realizing that LOL it's just a plant and can be grown in farms just like any other. Seriously, what I'm eating wasn't floating around after being picked out of someone's shorts at Coney Island yesterday.

(He mentioned New York so much! I know he used to live here, but it still makes me so proud~)

Thanks for translating!

[identity profile] mclove182.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I know, right? I feel so confused when someone in front of me says something like that, sometimes I forget what I'M going to order!!!

Seaweed's not all too bad, but I didn't know Americans have that opinion of it!!! Haha, there's this one seaweed, called Neptune's Necklace, which you can just pick off and eat! It's not bad either, but it's better if you go for the younger ones (yeah, I guess we're pretty crazy in NZ, aren't we?!?!)

Ah, food facts are the best <3! I love the quote about Chinese food haha though when you really think about it, Asian food really can be quite bizarre for other people :'D. Thank you for scanlating!

[identity profile] schwubdiwuppxd.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yay some historical facts about food~

I knew the thing about the Pasta~^^ Thanks for the translation

Lol Old Fritz is awesome xD And I also think that Prost is more common language... at least we say it here in Frankfurt too...

i love how hima always talks about his own expirienceXD

[identity profile] granular.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 11:37 am (UTC)(link)

Thank you for the scanslation~

Speaking of bizarre Chinese foods... I was in Beijing a year and a half ago, and we decided to visit one of the night markets. 'If it swims' is right... we managed to find Seahorses. Skewered on sticks. And they were moving--! I'm not sure whether they were dead or not, but, *shudders*.

They also had scorpions on sticks that were moving too xD. Oh, the wonders. We almost tried one, but we chickened out. OTL. Don't regret it.

[identity profile] iclexica.livejournal.com 2011-08-12 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Don't forget the grasshoppers! :D They're freaking huge, too! It looked like each was as long as my index finger!

[identity profile] mintbun.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, that was insanely interesting. I love all those facts.

I'm a Chinese American, but I don't think I've ate any bizarre meals as of yet. xD But yeah, we do tend to eat whatever the hell is edible and good.

England was just upset because on his rock, its hard to make any good wine, while France can make lots of it

[identity profile] pyrolynx.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
T-talking wine!! :O I wants it.

LOL this is so interesting. Just a pity it's not in comic XD Top three gourmet cuisine in the world... is it French, Chinese and Turkish? (Remembering the previous Gakuen Hetalia comic...)

The one about China is so trueee. Ice cream also originated in China, btw! (Hey America, do you hear me?)

And that poem about China, lol. It's popular in my country too. There's even some story that Chinese also eat orchid, bugs, and aborted human fetus :s Though, I think, the last one is a bit illegal.

Thanks for translating this~! I love food and Hetalia, seeing them together is a big happiness :3

[identity profile] xxmapsyrxx.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Just going off of what you said about ice cream, fridge was invented around 500BCE or 400BCE in China, during the Warring States. Ice cream were found in China around the Han dynasty, popularized 800 years later around 900CE to 1100CE during the Song dynasty.

It's really amazing to see how the history of a country can affect it's cusine as well as how the food affects the history of the country. There are a few things I don;t consume like beer and wine but it's really cool to see how beer evolved from it's 3000bce roots or how wine and wine growing land affected entire wars in a sense. it looks like Himaruya had a lot of fun writing about the food he ate in New York ads well as the food of America in general. It's always so nice to see people enjoying themselves while doing their job.
