Fanfic Help

So... yeah. Kinda a dumb question, but I wanted to get other people's opinions.

The situation will be an AU story with America and Germany. The basic plot is Alfred, who went to Germany on vacation or something, didn't pick a reason yet, is helping Ludwig, a German, avoid being drafted as a soldier for WWII. Fun times, right? Not really, but whatever.

Um, so, my question is, realistically, what would be the best country for Alfred and Ludwig to escape to before booking it to the US (or Canada. Canada works, too) and how?

I really dunno if this is allowed, so sorry to the GodMods if not. I'm looking for as many ideas as I can get to work with. Hopefully I'll manage something nice to read... but yeah. Any advice?

*coughs* I really do know my history. -w-; I'm just trying to help my muse by getting ideas that aren't the jumbled mess in my head.

Also, on a slightly different side note, does anyone have prompt ideas for a GermanyxAmerica one-shot fic? (AU or otherwise.) This is just an extra question to help poke at my muse for the above story that I hope to write. Thanks all~

Switzerland. (Neutral Country)

[identity profile] fablespinner.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
that's only because it's historically accurate, people did run to Switzerland. From both Austria and Germany, Switzerland was the first stop on the road to escape.

From there France/UK then to whatever the final destination would be.

Not offended at all, I know what you're going for (different). It's just hard to balance different with factual sometimes. It really depends on mode of transportation most of the time. (and if Luwdig and Alfred have papers legal or forged.) Are they fleeing in a Car? On Foot? by Train? etc... If Foot, then go with Switzerland, they can conceivably walk there.

Car? They might be able to go the France Route, but watch the roadblock checkpoints, that will be difficult. they *MUST* have papers for these.

Train is even harder, they were patrolled by military and you had better have papers ready to show, they checked all passengers.

have you already thought of the netherlands? or austria?

[identity profile] traumschwinge.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Afaik, people usually went to the UK, Sweden or the Netherlands to flee.

A lot of people living in Germany at the time escaped to France at the onset of WWII, and from there to the United States. Lots of Russian art folks, anyway ^_^;; I don't know when you're setting this, but as long as it's near the beginning--i.e., you wouldn't have had Germany in the Hitler Youth and then being drafted, because the probability of his leaving would be a bit low--France would be a likely choice.

Sweden

[identity profile] aislingthegreat.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people used to go to Switzerland, but AFAIK it was quite tricky to cross the border during wartime. How early in the war is the fic, if you don't mind me asking?

[identity profile] aureliuszvektor.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, those who attempted to escape--especially military deserters--were often shipped back or imprisoned for years unless they fulfilled certain conditions of "helplessness" (like being under 6 years old or elderly). Switzerland was the kind of neutral that didn't accept political refugees.

For a movie that deals with this, I recommend Das Boot ist Vol (The Boat is Full). It's very depressing, though =/

[identity profile] sweden-chan.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Seen two so far that have suggested Sweden, and I think that's a nice idea. Sweden is neutral, was then to, and there is far to little Sweden in fanfics~ (is from Sweden)

For a specific RL example, Willy Brandt, who later became Chancellor of West Germany, escaped to Norway in 1933 to avoid arrest for his work in socialist political groups. (However, he also had outside connections in the wider socialist youth movement who helped arrange his departure -- just something to keep in mind if you're contemplating this route.)

I love Alfred and Ludwig together, platonic or otherwise, so I shall attempt to help c:

The obvious answer is Switzerland - Sound of Music, anyone? xD But American soldiers looking to avoid being drafted during the Vietnam War went to Canada, or so popular legend goes. So it wouldn't be too far-fetched to have them seek asylum in Canada, only thing is getting there is the hard part :P

Alfie and Lud have more things in common than most people give them credit for; they're both hard-working, dedicated people, with their own special brand of charm. I'd say any working situation brings them together - maybe they live in the same crappy apartment and are struggling to pay the rent, or Alfred works on Lud's favorite bookstore/coffee shop/whatever.

PM me if you need any more help or want someone to bounce back ideas on, I'd be glad to help c:

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-25 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I literally burst out laughing at the thought of Ludwig as the Captain xD That is hilarious. I've never seen The Sound of Music before don't keel over but I've always wanted to...

I've never even thought of bringing Prussia into the picture, and let me say, it scares me to have Prussia and Alfred together in the same room XD So scared /orz

It's true, the United States and Germany are considered very close allies today, but I don't think their relationship was always sunflowers and roses. The German navy in WWI did lots of damage to American sailors over the Atlantic, and it was a secret message from Germany to Mexico that brought America into WWI in the first place. (Germany had basically told Mexico to invade the US.) And of course, relations were downright dismal in WWII, despite the fact that the Americans mainly fought the Pacific Battle against the Japanese. BUUUT the beauty of Hetalia (and the world) is that no country has ever had perfect relations with one another, and thus they must learn to forgive and commemorate; life goes on, you know?

Whew, you got a really long ramble there. /pats sympathetically. Mea culpa.

And yes, if I didn't scare you off, feel free to PM me for anything XD~

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-25 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure I will :> I look forward to the day.

GENERAL VON STEUBEN! ♥ I half-way wrote a fic about him whipping Alfie into shape not literally. The Marquis de Lafayette also makes a cameo appearance because he's French and that's reason enough :>

I think it can be taken both ways, but that in the end there's no lasting bitterness or resentment about it o.o It's my humble opinion that you can't hold grudges for a million years...although I know people who do, that have been taught to do so T__T

Rambles are indeed fun! 8D I don't have any friends that like Lud/Alfie...so can I friend you and change that?! |D nice segue, no?

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
That shall be a glorious day indeed XD

No, I didn't get around to finish it; is there another fanfic like that floating around? Bummer...Well it probably doesn't have a Steuben vs Lafayette showdown! Which was clearly the reason why I was writing that fic...

You know, I feel like America gets along with so many other nations, it's a real pity that his relationships outside Canada, England, and France aren't really explored. I shall attempt to change this >D Beer indeed. Beer brings the world together |D

Holy dear sweet God Timbequador. We will be good friends, I can tell XD~
IT'S REALLY FUNNY YOU MENTION PEDOS BECAUSE I GET TOLD I'M JAILBAIT A LOT pretend this isn't here /orz

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
It would come here sooner if the movie was on Youtube. Fft.

Ouch! I can't imagine Prussia doing that. Baron von Steuben, though? It's a possibility xD

Alfred is already such a stereotypical American, which is alright with me because it's pretty cute, but he has a lot of potential for depth! The world always needs more Alfred! >D WE SHOULD BE PARTNERS IN ALFRED CRIME. What is this I don't even.

I have a soft spot for draft beer, but American beer is shit anyways q__q

OBVIOUSLY. And it's right next to Timbuktu for convenience. Don't ask how I know that.

SO MUCH OF THIS POST NEEDS TO BE CROSSED OUT FOR IMPROPRIETY LOLOL.

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Megavideo. Megavideo is the answer.

Oh God, Americans butchering other languages. It's so cringe-inducing, but also a little endearing in a way. At least we try? xD And yes, huggable. He is so huggable! And not because he's gaining weight...which he's totally not... *shifty eyes* AMERI-CAVE WOULD BE AMAZING. Capes and boxers with the stars and stripes on them! I secretly think Alfred has those kind of boxers anyways.

Not everyone likes beer, so nbd.

An underwater train, just like the London Channel! Er, I think it's called the London Channel. Whatever witchcraft it is that connects Paris and London together. It's /some/thing at any rate.

WE ARE OUR OWN BRAND OF GOVERNMENT CENSORSHIP.

Also I KNEW it was totally late where you are. This sounds very creepy in retrospect. Because Hawaii is always way behind everyone else, even more so since we don't observe DST.

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
Other than that blasted time limit. It's a blight upon the world.

We do try! ;^; And we're not really that bad...and I've heard some horrible accents before, but at least the point gets across :P.

And yes, it's definitely muscle. Muscle. /super shifty eyes. In my head canon, Alfred's always been the type of guy that can eat whatever he wants and still not gain weight. We all have friends that are like that /shakes fist. He's always been a pretty lean cat in my mind. Obvs Lud works out like crazy so he's all...buffed out. /approves.

I do prefer Pepsi over Coke, so consider yourself redeemed 8D /to the Ameri-Cave! Do we need superhero identities?

I love Prussia so damn much. Goes without saying.

I...I don't know! Maybe you give off magnetism that lures certain demographics to you. You should try see if you can lure buff Germans. /nods. Er, Alfred's mitten, Rhode Island?!

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Y...Y...You...have an English accent? But you're American? Have you been to England? o.o /forever confused. Just...how?! IT MUST BE EXPLAINED! o.o Maybe you're a changeling. But instead of being a fairy child you're an English child. Clearly that makes the most sense.

Pfft, fast metabolisms. Fortunately I don't like sweets so I'm out of the woods there >D I've always liked slender guys over super buff ones. But don't get me wrong, buff guys are nice to look at too (;

We really must. And unlike some of the crappier superhero identities, we will have good disguises...

Oh. Lmfao. Fail. I don't even want to explain how I got Rhode Island. /forever shamed.

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
I, I just, how?! /forever confused but accepts it because hey, it's an English accent. Sherlock Holmes will do that to you (;

Brownies are my weakness. And fruit-flavored snacks? It's just, they're shaped like Star Wars characters and it's magical D:

As long as the colors are complementary! /loves being fashionable.

/really really forever confused now

Aaand on that wonderful note, I am off to bed! Get some sleep! It was nice talking to you ;D

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-03-28 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
My best friend/wife forever ships RDJ and Jude Law. She even Google'd his middle name so she could refer to him by his initials - which I don't remember.

I WANT BROWNIES SO BAD NOW ;^; I've had those! They're great. They got me through freshman year, no lie.

IT'S ZE INNER FRENCH IN ME ~ can't help being fashionable >D And men that are all dressed up like that are attractive |D /shot.

Dear God D: My spring break ends tomorrow so I can't do that anymore. /forever crying.
