[Discussion] If Hetalia was made by someone else...

If this isn't allowed, mods, please delete this.

So I was wondering- what would Hetalia be like if it was created by someone else?

Don't get me wrong. I love Hetalia the way it is. With all it's crack and all... but what if someone else took the concept of Hetalia and did something different with it? What things would change? What wouldn't? Would it be a completely different genre all together? Would some characters be removed? Would some be added? Would there be an actual (gasp!) storyline?

I want to know your ideas. :D

I've always kind of wondered how it'd be if Tommy Wiseau took a shot at it.

"YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, ITALY!!!"

I like to imagine if Kouta Hirano of Hellsing fame drew it.

Suddenly D-cups for all the girls, oversized weaponry, oceans of blood and Nazi vampires! And now I totally see Italy as being Schrodinger

Italy as Schrodinger is one of the best ideas ever! That and 'oceans of blood'

...oh dammit. You've got me imagining how it would be if Naoki Urasawa wrote it. Curse you.

The differences:
- Darker. A lot darker, grittier, little if any comedy and focusing mostly on more serious episodes of history. Heaps of suspense. Some mind fuckery.
- An over-aching plot, probably beginning with some kind of conspiracy and/or murder mystery (maybe someone is trying to kill off the nations? Maybe they're being controlled and manipulated by an outside force? IDK.) Lots and lots of subplots with lots and lots of characters. Well developed characters too, at that.
- Identity would probably be a big theme, concerning exactly what the nations are, how they come to be, how they feel about that, etc.
- Everyone would have a large (at least by manga standards) and defined nose. You are no longer a special snowflake, Russia.

The stuff that would stay the same:
- Germany would still be a main character. Urasawa looooves Germany.
- Time skips. Hey, we're in the middle ages. Now it's WWII! Now it's 2011. Now we're in the middle of the Enlightenment! Now we're in the Roman Empire. Is your head spinning yet?
- Hard to follow, though for vastly different reasons.
- The apparent main characters will disappear for long periods of time while others get the spot light, then reappear later.
- An optimistic tone! For all the dark changes, there will still be a sense that there is good in the world and things can still end up okay.
- Lots of characters. Heaps of 'em. Oodles.
- Historical figures will still show up aside the fictional ones.

...why am I such a nerd.

[identity profile] maybebaby83.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
A fellow Urasawa fan! I agree with you completely, I think that it takes someone like him to make the series work in a serious tone. Not just anyone can take a concept like this and make that spin on it, imo.

if Kazuki Takahashi did it: Countries fighting wars with a CHILDREN'S CARD GAME~!

if Oh!Great did it: bigger cup sizes for the girls, and more bathroom humor. Oh, don't forget improbable physics at work! :D

if Hotta Yumi + Obata did it: the meaningful growth of a country (Italy) with his friend Germany.

if Akira Amano did it: I don't know about the plot, but they sure are getting prettier in every comic strip that comes out. :)

...just yeah ^^;

If any other mangaka had got the idea to do Hetalia, I'm sure there wouldn't be as much fanservice. Himaruya knows exactly what the fans want C:
Plus, I'm sure it's hard to do a series with so many completely different characters.
I'm sure many mangakas would make it dark, rather than funny.

I'm sure any other comicbook artist would be serious (at least alittle) when writing about the history of other counties--and would do actual research *gasp*
Then again, I kind of like Himaruya's fanservic-y approach in a way. There isn't much given in Himaruya's storyline for anyone to really argue about. It allows the fans who are from to write about the history of their own country.
Since Hetalia's storyline is SUPPOSED to take place around WW2, I guess a cracky storyline is the best way to go :/

Everyone's talking about mangaka's - I'd be really interested to see a novel/illustrated novel (with one or two pictures for each chapter).

But, to jump on the bandwagon: Tite Kubo.

For some reason, the first thing that leaps to mind is that all personality differences that there may be between Prussia and Grimmjow would cease to exist.

CLAMP

Italy would go around happily catching white flags, while being stalked by tsundere!Germany. Japan would make his dresses and videotape it all.
Then there would be clones, angst, feathers and warrior!Prussia and flirty, fake-smiling France would tag along. Mokona is Spain.

Meanwhile, somewhere else, America and England would be EATING EACH OTHER'S EYES after the Revolution.

pervert (but nice guy) Korea would buy a shycom moe!China, who likes to pose like in dirty magazines.

Stalked-by-ghosts Estonia would enter a misterious shop run by eerie and big-breasted fem!Russia, who is on-and-off coming onto him. But stoic!Netherlands would be The One For Him. Liet would show up to be the unluckiest person on earth.

And finally, Sweden would be in charge of escorting Finland, a secretly badass indestructible weapon, to an amusement park where a big-ass Hungary statue would be waiting for him.

[identity profile] heyheyho.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And Sealand, Latvia and Seborga would be a group of rich young kids who solve crime with ridiculous amounts of money!

And a spinoff of Seborga stealing stuff around the city dressed like tuxedo mask, staring also his (a lot) younger girlfriend Wy, and two older brothers who are always bored because Spain/Germany isn't in town...

HAHAHAH. IT'S LIKE YOU WANT ME TO USE MY IMAGINATION!

You really, really don't.

Anyway, it'd be absolutely hilarious if Natsuki Takaya wrote it. Or if any other shojo writer wrote it. Or if any shonen writer wrote it. Ukraine's cup size would become standard for all of the cast.

I think if Hetalia was done by Terry Pratchett (/is different :33) it would be less cracky and more straight humor. More of the characters would be straight-faced and not as cutesy. And there would be references to everything!

And yes, there would be a story line. All explorations of the world. (note: I have only read Discworld.)

If Addam Warren did Hetalia, the art would be more realistic, cooler, and probably less clothes on everyone. And it'd be funny. (note: I have only read Empowered.)

[identity profile] nota-lone.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)

I read the post and all the comments, and still the only other way I could see this being done is like Scandinavia and the World. Though that doesn't go the WW2 route, it does go back and forth between time lines.

I wonder what Hetalia would be like written by Setona Mizushiro. Itd be darker, and more psychological. But still have a tad bit of fanservice. Oh and Love triangles, love triangles everywhere.

This has been done before... there's an old Viz comic (the British comic) where they did a story called "Europe School" or something, with students personifying European countries (and Japan) going to the same school. Since it's Viz, the characters are all ugly and crude and it's very silly and funny. And of course, the British boy is the hero, who makes all the other characters behave.

Then there's the various political cartoons that showed nation personifications; there's no limit to using this concept I guess.

[identity profile] shiroyo-kuroki.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ummm... For some reason I thought in Rin/Lynn Okamoto... A LOT of gore, a tragic past between Italy and HRE/Germany (Lucy = HRE/Germany, Kouta = N. Italy, Yuka = Japan, etc.), a sorta tragic end (disappearance of Prussia [Mariko?]) and... Ok, I lack of imagination right now x'DDD

And I can't forget the "PetShop of Horrors" style... Count D and Leon... Just yes.

I would totally watch Hetalia, all like the ultimate bishounens.

I don't know :P

Maybe we could see Italy's eyes often xD Or there would be the classic scene where someone sees Germany without a shirt. Or England naked, taking a shower, I don't know X////D
