[Discussion] If Hetalia was made by someone else...

If this isn't allowed, mods, please delete this.

So I was wondering- what would Hetalia be like if it was created by someone else?

Don't get me wrong. I love Hetalia the way it is. With all it's crack and all... but what if someone else took the concept of Hetalia and did something different with it? What things would change? What wouldn't? Would it be a completely different genre all together? Would some characters be removed? Would some be added? Would there be an actual (gasp!) storyline?

I want to know your ideas. :D

I've always kind of wondered how it'd be if Tommy Wiseau took a shot at it.

"YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, ITALY!!!"

You have won some internets

I like to imagine if Kouta Hirano of Hellsing fame drew it.

Suddenly D-cups for all the girls, oversized weaponry, oceans of blood and Nazi vampires! And now I totally see Italy as being Schrodinger

...oh dammit. You've got me imagining how it would be if Naoki Urasawa wrote it. Curse you.

The differences:
- Darker. A lot darker, grittier, little if any comedy and focusing mostly on more serious episodes of history. Heaps of suspense. Some mind fuckery.
- An over-aching plot, probably beginning with some kind of conspiracy and/or murder mystery (maybe someone is trying to kill off the nations? Maybe they're being controlled and manipulated by an outside force? IDK.) Lots and lots of subplots with lots and lots of characters. Well developed characters too, at that.
- Identity would probably be a big theme, concerning exactly what the nations are, how they come to be, how they feel about that, etc.
- Everyone would have a large (at least by manga standards) and defined nose. You are no longer a special snowflake, Russia.

The stuff that would stay the same:
- Germany would still be a main character. Urasawa looooves Germany.
- Time skips. Hey, we're in the middle ages. Now it's WWII! Now it's 2011. Now we're in the middle of the Enlightenment! Now we're in the Roman Empire. Is your head spinning yet?
- Hard to follow, though for vastly different reasons.
- The apparent main characters will disappear for long periods of time while others get the spot light, then reappear later.
- An optimistic tone! For all the dark changes, there will still be a sense that there is good in the world and things can still end up okay.
- Lots of characters. Heaps of 'em. Oodles.
- Historical figures will still show up aside the fictional ones.

...why am I such a nerd.

Uhh, you got me wondering if Takeshi Obata + Tsugumi Ohba took a shot at it.

...

EPIC. +1263981623123618991648276 controversial points.

A fellow Urasawa fan! I agree with you completely, I think that it takes someone like him to make the series work in a serious tone. Not just anyone can take a concept like this and make that spin on it, imo.

If anyone could do it, it's him. Hell, he took Astro Boy and turned it into a psychological thriller. He could handle this.

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
if Kazuki Takahashi did it: Countries fighting wars with a CHILDREN'S CARD GAME~!

if Oh!Great did it: bigger cup sizes for the girls, and more bathroom humor. Oh, don't forget improbable physics at work! :D

if Hotta Yumi + Obata did it: the meaningful growth of a country (Italy) with his friend Germany.

if Akira Amano did it: I don't know about the plot, but they sure are getting prettier in every comic strip that comes out. :)

...just yeah ^^;

If any other mangaka had got the idea to do Hetalia, I'm sure there wouldn't be as much fanservice. Himaruya knows exactly what the fans want C:
Plus, I'm sure it's hard to do a series with so many completely different characters.
I'm sure many mangakas would make it dark, rather than funny.

[identity profile] sealandrulz.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure any other comicbook artist would be serious (at least alittle) when writing about the history of other counties--and would do actual research *gasp*
Then again, I kind of like Himaruya's fanservic-y approach in a way. There isn't much given in Himaruya's storyline for anyone to really argue about. It allows the fans who are from to write about the history of their own country.
Since Hetalia's storyline is SUPPOSED to take place around WW2, I guess a cracky storyline is the best way to go :/

It was "Sturmtruppen".

Italy as Schrodinger is one of the best ideas ever! That and 'oceans of blood'

[identity profile] wyvern-ventrue.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! OMG! That would be the most awesome thing ever!!
Naoki Urasawa is the best mangaka in the whole world! And I can totally see the super psychological thriller he'd put as the plot in Hetalia.
I can see him deepening the Germany/Prussia relationship (in a non-gay way) in a dark way like in a Johan/Nina (Monster) kind of way.

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The more I think about it the more awesome it gets, especially with Hirano's quirky sense of humour and complete lack of concern about offending anyone. Also he does kickass action sequences.

I wish i still had my Hellsing icons right now, lol.

[identity profile] wyvern-ventrue.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can totally see him changing the funny and harmless stereotype jokes that we are used in Hetalia to offending ones...but knowing his awesome sense of humor it would still be funny.
And the war would have another new meaning lol, blood here and there with twisted plots and everything...would be a really interesting point of view, lol.

[identity profile] thefearofblood.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I shudder to imagine a Disney version.

*LOVES NAOKI URASAWA'S WORK*
The man is so very underrated, and your list is excellent, highlighting all the things I love and know about Urasawa. If you're a nerd, you're a well researched nerd with excellent taste.

Yes,I would trust him with a serious Hetalia, quite happily. I mean, he can write an intense story and glorious plot twists, and his characterization is so skilled (seriously, the man can make you love a character that survives for only like 18 pages).

"Everyone would have a large (at least by manga standards) and defined nose. You are no longer a special snowflake, Russia."
XD LOL. LOVED that one, and it'd be so true.

Oh, the singing, the singing, and the horrible attempts at multicultural-ness!!

[identity profile] qualapec.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone's talking about mangaka's - I'd be really interested to see a novel/illustrated novel (with one or two pictures for each chapter).

But, to jump on the bandwagon: Tite Kubo.

For some reason, the first thing that leaps to mind is that all personality differences that there may be between Prussia and Grimmjow would cease to exist.

If any other mangaka had got the idea to do Hetalia, I'm sure there wouldn't be as much fanservice.

I beg to differ: CLAMP
ditto on the loads of different characters
