[Discussion] Headcanon regarding the dub?

uuuuh first time making anything other than an art post, kinda nervous here

So with the release of the dub on the horizon and clips and episodes being released, has anything in the dub added, removed or changed something in people's headcanons?

Regarding HRE's strangely Italian accent. While I had always assumed that he would have a German one, what with his use of "Vati" and "Mutti" in his Marukaite Chikyuu, the dub has made me consider the fact that perhaps he adopted an Italian one in order to sound less frightening to Chibitalia.
Only it kinda sorta really backfired. Badly.

...I thought I had more but I can't seem to remember any of it right now. THIS IS WHAT I GET FOR TRYING TO POST RIGHT AFTER WAKING UP aljlkfjalkf Maybe I'll remember after I get home from college orientation.

I fanwank that HRE's accent is because Latin was the official language of the real HRE. That's the best I can do.

*HRE's accent is Italian-esque.

I fail, sorry

That makes no sense, though. Of course, Latin was an important language because of the religious backgrounds, and the official names were Latin, but The Holy Roman Empire of German Nations already says it all - the population (mostly) spoke German.

Latin was only the language of scholars and the purple which mostly also excludes the rulers.

Johann Jakob Moser said "Teutschland wird auf teutsch regiert" - "Germany (here: HRE) is ruled in German".

Nobody really knows what Latin sounded like, though. It may have sounded like Church Latin, which has a more Italian sound, but who knows for sure?

In this case the Japanese version is kidna wrong, they probably should have used Latin instead of German. Since a form of Latin was the official language of the HRE and Italian-ish accent only makes sense.

I have been thinking HRE had German accent...

But I don't think HRE was noble-esque...
The nations are supposed to represent the majority of their people, and HRE's people mostly spoke German...

DEEN YOU RUIN MY TWO FAVORITE FANDOMS, WHY?!

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. Why should he have a Latin/Italian accent if HRE is the Holy Roman Empire of German Nations?
The first the Empire was ruled by were the Franks, a German tribe (by Charlemagne).
Of course, the German was a different German we know today but most people (except for the lands in the East where Slavic and the Southern states were Italian and French were spoken) spoke German. Only clergy and scholars spoke Latin.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It only became the Holy Roman Empire of German Nations in 1512. It was created as Imperium Romanun Sacrum.

The dub hasn't changed anything for me so far. Funimation is sticking to the main storyline, just making the dialog more to the liking of American audiences, I'm guessing that's idea at least. So far I think the voice actors are doing a great job with their parts.

And HRE is still my least favorite character, the dubbed voice suits him perfectly. because of the way it sounds. An Italian accent is perfect for him, since the historical Holy Roman Emperor spent very little time in Germany to begin with. As soon as the crown was on his head he went straight to Rome to order the pope around.

...no? The Emperor was a wandering emperor, but
1. Rome wasn't his seat of power. It was important where he came from. When he came from Bavaria, he was pretty often in Bavaria. At the end of the HRE, most emperors came from Austria and their residence was Vienna.
2. he was also very dependent on the Pope, it's not like he could "order him around" (the Pope was probably more powerful than ANY emperor in Europe at some times).

Even if you don't like the character.

With the caveat that I have problems with a lot of lines in the dub:

It's made me ship Gertalia even harder (I mean "we don't have to kiss?" "Nope! Not unless you want to!" Come ON!)

I don't have much to add to the HRE Italian accent discussion (to be honest, I hadn't noticed :x), but I'm enjoying reading it!

[identity profile] curlee1029.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I have noticed HRE's Italian-like accent, but I never took all too much note of it. There are many reasons this could be, but the accent never really bugged me or was something I felt out of place. Now, I would be conserned if HRE started talking with an Austriallian accent, but that's not the case here.

[identity profile] crakhaed.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The dub hasn't changed anything for me, not really anyway.

I think HRE's accent is alright, but I never liked him or Chibitalia super-much anyway (though ngl, I think dub!Chibitalia's voice is cuter).

This kind of discussion on the dub is interesting though. :)

I was incredibly confused by HRE's English voice because it didn't sound German (which, like many people, was something I was expecting) but I guess it doesn't bother me all that much. I'm not a history bluff and as long as HRE doesn't sound extremely British or American or French or something (which would be lulzy), I guess I'm okay with it. ^^

... I do wish HRE's voice was higher though. :( I was used to how childlike he sounded in the Japanese version.

I LOVE everyone else's voice though, especially Germany's and France's. Fits my headcanon perfectly!

I've always felt that Germany gets attached to animals, but the Herr Stick thing makes me think he gets attached to inanimate objects easily, too. He has a hard time making friends and that's always been canon, so why not?

Ah i think the whole HRE havin an Italian accent makes sense. At the time latin was the common language meaning many european countries spoke it. Along with Greek,German and Italian. True that mostly only scholars and philosphers spoke latin but note HRE's clothing. Philophers and scholars wore that at the time. Also the official languages in the HRE were Latin, the Germanic languages, the Romantic languages and Slavic dialects
And Latin sounds very spanishy, italiany
Well that's my take on it. I still like the dub(no lie)XD LOL
And Chibitalia sounds like my aunt when she babytalks ppl hahaha. But so far I <3 evryone's voices sooooo far!
