When did it start?

I've been with this community for a few months now and I just don't understand something.

When did Canada and Prussia get so romantically involved? Did I miss a strip? Was it based on historical fact? Or simply because there is a small town in Ontario named New Prussia?

If anyone could shine the light on this pairing that would be awesome.

I think it started with Prussias character CD ^^
Prussia praised Canada's pancakes and wanted to give him an award...

I think it got started from New Prussia, then just branched out from there.

It's really just a fanon thing. Probably started from Prussia's April Fools blog.

Not to mention that Canada and Prussia are both forgotten countries, and they kind of match in that way. I'm pretty sure Prussia has never mistaken Canada for America.

The only actual canon interaction the two had was when Prussia hacked Kitayume and made it his blog during April Fools '09. Canada arrived, claiming that "Maple syrup surely brings happiness to the people who eat it", and gave Prussia, who was skeptical, a bottle for free. After tasting the syrup, Prussia stated that he enjoyed it.

It should also be noted that Prussia actually remembered Canada, and never mistook him for America.

^ That's from teh Hetalia Wikia

Plus, their personalities are so different, they're cute together ;D

[identity profile] dani-in-japan.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no canon basis for it, aside from Prussia liking pancakes in his April Fool's blog.

It's all fanon and your own interpretation.

As research in the Kink Meme archives could tell you,

The evolution in popular Canada pairings went like

Canada/Seychelles --> Canada/Poland --> Canada/Russia --> Canada/Prussia --> Canada/Ukraine

The overlap between Canada/Prussia and Canada/Ukraine was fuzzy, and seems to have ended the trend of half the fandom shipping the in pairing intensely for some 2-4 months before moving on to the next; I was expecting to see the rise of Canada/Estonia (or Romano, or Iceland, or Korea) in February, but it never came.

off topic comment, but

I really miss Canada/Seychelles ;A;. That was so cute. I don't really click with any of the other Canada pairings that are commonly thrown around and I'd prefer some America/Ukraine kthx.

I just found them all weird, TBH, but then I'm also incapable of getting honestly interested in pairings where the involved never exchanged words in canon but where's the Canada/Lithuania, I'd like to know

Understandable. I can get into various pairs for various reasons and there's no real pattern. If it clicks, it clicks, if it doesn't, it doesn't. Switzerland/Belgium is one of my favorites. Proof that I don't require canonical sense. But I get why some people do.

I think Canada/Netherlands is becoming more popular now. o: But there is some historical bases for that.

You mean the tulips sent to Canada every year from the Netherlands on July... 27th, I think?
That makes that pair so freaking adorable~

Netherlands as a pairing--top or bottom, I'm not sure--was actually around before Prussia/Canada. Back when Netherlands was still The Shadowman (lol) people found their relationship IRL-wise appealing to their taste and thus became a hit.

The wave softened down for a while and boomed back in when Netherlands' character finally came out--people were finally able to put a face on The Shadowman ;D

[identity profile] vampiraduchessa.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
There is :)

The historical basis is that during WWII, Canada liberated Netherlands from the nazis, as well as the fact that Canada also sheltered the Dutch Princess Juliana and her daughters in Ottawa, where she also gave birth to Princess Margriet in 1943.
The tulips yami_no_ningyo mentioned were sent as a thank you to that. ^w^

..............excuse my Canadian history talk >w<;;

Yes, it started in the KM. Truth is, it was spawned off I think some character jumbling and then we had that fill for Fail Bondage that was Prussia/Canada. It pretty much boomed there on.

When that came out and became a success, fans where a giddy at how the pairing could work and started to hatch up new ideas and such. The Prussia/Canada comm was made, New Prussia came into light, and people started to ship. It started to go on deeper with an artist's help--the one who made the chibis of Prussia and Canada (the art is on yami_no_ningyo's icon). From what I could tell, the picture of Canada giving maple syrup to Prussia in his blog just spread the fanon, but only by a small amount.

Hope that helps c:

I always thought it was because of New Prussia.

But I guess it is all fandom-based. I love it anyway though. XD

[identity profile] ghrelin.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know where this came from, but it has always irritated me.

[identity profile] yourwordspoetic.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does it irritate you? I'm just curious.

[identity profile] ghrelin.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
so not opening a discussion on this

Sorry :/

The weird thing about the New Prussia thing to me is that there is also a town in America called King of Prussia. It's in Pennsylvania.

As for him never mistaking him for America, considering that they've only interacted once (albeit briefly), it seems a bit odd to say 'never.'

I was thinking this too. o__o

I think that the April Fool's Blog put the idea in some people's heads, but it was perpetuated by the idea that Prussia isn't really a nation anymore.

One reason I like it is that I think they balance each other nicely; Prussia can help bring Canada out of his shell, and Canada encourages him to not be a dick. And the pairing is still small enough that I haven't seen many people seriously fuck it up with seme/uke stereotypes.

Especially if you look at Prussia as not-really-a-nation-anymore, it adds a very interesting dynamic to their relationship where he, who would normally be treated as incredibly dominant, is the home-partner and Canada's the one who's out and working. As strange as it sounds, I LOVE yaoi that plays with gender dynamics. I think that Prussia needs an Italy- someone kind, loving, and not going to maniuplate him- in the same way that Canada needs someone to acknowledge his existence.

One really good fic I would recommend "Propositions and Oppositions" by ghostofthemotif. It's kind of my PruCan bible. At very least, I think it does a good job with their relationship and why they work well together from a character standpoint and it pretty much sums up what I love about them. Also one of my early influences on how to write Canada.

Of course, that's not the only way to write them, as your mileage may vary. One thing I will say is that this pairing is lacking serious angst. There's LOTS of delightful fluff and humor stories, but there are alternative ways to interpret their relationship that are WAY more screwed up and still totally IC. When you have a crack pairing between secondary characters, it can be a wide variety of things. When a pairing can be a wide variety of things, I'm very attracted to it.

[identity profile] powderthefox.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It most definitely started from the April Fool's thing, the Ore-Sama Blog and all that. When and how the pairing gained so much ground, however, I'm not sure. I was always more of a Canada/Ukraine person myself.

[identity profile] darkinsanity-13.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was just that minor interaction, and as per fandom's tendency to make a pairing out of anything, it kind of sprouted. People getting romance out of it irked me a little at the beginning, but some really well-written fanfics have made me hop on the wagon |D I still prefer Canada/Ukraine (which technically has history to back it up) though.

In all honesty, a crack threesome of Prussia/Canada/Ukraine has been growing inside my brain, and I can't seem to get rid of it or bring myself to dislike the idea...

[identity profile] vegansushi.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It all started from the Ore-Sama Blog, then it sprouted from there... I also have the link to the blog if you like. Just scroll down near the end.

Imagine throwing two darts at a dart board with your eyes closed. Whomever's number came up with whomever else's number, "won". Othertimes you just have cases of people wanting to see Cute Person "A" and Cute Person "B" make out. They don't even have to be from the same series.

The mind of some fangirls is a scary place in which Arthur Kirkland and Inuyasha can go to a pub, where the girls from K-ON! are the house band; and Nuriko is the waitress. Revy is trying to out-drink Misato. And the chef from Kuroshitsuji is about to blow everybody up if the Angels at table #3 don't stop covering the bar with feathers, sakura petals, and butterflies. And yes Jounouchi, your dragon does look like Charizard. Now put it away before I get out the Gundams and magical girls. (That wrote itself way too easily.)See, some are screwy that way. You should run very fast from them.

My love of PruCan started a while back by a fic on fanfiction.net. It was adorable.

The comm never originated from the Oresama blog, or random dart boards, or anything like that.

[livejournal.com profile] prussiaxcanada originated from an in-joke between a group of cosplayers last May, when a big group of us doing a skit referred to each other by country name (since we didn't know everyone's names yet). Our Canada and Prussia somehow ended up in some girly wigs and they looked great in photos together, so we made the pairing into a joke, especially as it was so crackish.

After an anime con, we created the Prussia x Canada comm as another way of staying in touch, where we posted fanfic and fanart and pretended to take the pairing seriously, and pretended not to know each other IRL. Then I guess people who actually ship it started checking out our joke works (New Prussia? yeeeeah, one of us cosplayed them as a joke, too...) and it went on from there.

That's how the [livejournal.com profile] prussiaxcanada community started together, anyway. orz Hope this gave you some insight on the power of pairings ;;
