Renaming Countries?

 So, I know there are quite a few people who are unsatisfied with some of the names Himaruya gave the nations, but that's pretty much besides the point. If the human names of the nations didn't exist, and you were allowed to choose whatever you wanted for their names, what would you call them?

[identity profile] powderthefox.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
N.Italy = Mario
S.Italy = Luigi

...On a more serious note, I'd call France "François". Seriously, I know they're both French names, but I think it's just way more "French" than Francis.

Can't really offer an opinion on the other nations, since I'm either not overly familiar with their countries' traditional names, or already content with the ones they have.

None. Himaruya isn't perfect, but it's still his comic. And honestly, I'm not familiar enough with any foreign cultures to try to say I know better than he does re; what the human names should be. That would be conceited, IMO. Maybe I'd want to change Switzerland's first name to something that doesn't make me think of Trigun, though. But I'd definitely leave "Zwingli" alone. I like that surname.

Honestly? I just wish all of the characters had one. It's easier to talk about it in public without sounding like a total weirdo. It'd also make life easier on me with my ships that involve a character that does have one and a character that doesn't (Switzerland/Belgium, Korea/Ukraine, America/Ukraine, etc)

[identity profile] peachfloss.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you on the names thing. A lot of people say that he came up with the ones that do have names just to give in to the fandom's demands for kicks, which is why some names are sort of off (i.e.: Vargas is a Spanish surname, not Italian). I jst wish he'd follow through and give the rest of them names, even if they're not "perfect".

Steve.

Every single nation, ostensibly male or female, would be named Steve.

Except England.

His name would be The Right Honorable Lord Pickles. Or Pickles to his friends, but since he has none that wouldn't come up.

Germany looks more like a Lukas to me.
France first name would be would be Jacques.

The only thing I want to change is the pronunciation and romaji writing of some names, which is mostly decided by fans. I would prefer Vash as Basch, Lovino as Rovino, Francis as François, Karpusi as Carpus, Sadiq as Sadik.

Tino => Timo. I think something like Toivo ("Hope". IMO the guy looks just like Toivo!), Väinö, Juho or Matias would also fit Finland. Or Taisto ("A battle") because Finland's kickass. |D It's a bit outdated name though.

Väinämöinen is ok though it's not really used here (or okay, there's been like seven people who've had it as a surname but they're all six feet under now). After all, stereotypical Finnish person just has to have a surname ending with -nen. :D Järvinen would be an alternative, as järvi = a lake and Finland is known as "The country of a thousand lakes". (Well, actually there's about 188,000 of them :I)

[identity profile] kusimuki.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh Järvinen would so much better than Väinämöinen. I mean Väinämöinen, wtf? Is Tino some old bearded man?
Virtanen would be cool too haha |D

Tino is okay to me, it's cute.

Personally I think we refer to the nations by their human names way too much. ._.; The characters in Hetalia represent countries and there's nothing wrong with calling them by their nation names. And I mean, Himaruya picked good names for most of the characters, but some he got wrong. Italy, for example, is Feliciano Vargas: Feliciano is a last name, Vargas is Spanish. To me it feels a little odd to me to use that name when 'Italy' is better.

Anyway, I'm pretty used to Alfred by now but America should have gotten a less formal sounding name--maybe a Christian name, like Canada (Matthew)?

[identity profile] omgimsuchadork.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
"To me it feels a little odd to me to use that name when 'Italy' is better."

Well, it certainly makes it easier to "hide" your conversation from nosy eavesdroppers when it sounds like you're talking about people, not countries.

Sweden should be named Alistair or Vincent or Sigurd or any other handsome name. "Berwald" just doesn't appeal to me...

Liechtenstein should be named Amelia (Fire Emblem 8 Reference)

Hungary's name should be Heather (I don't know... It suits her >_>)

[identity profile] crimsonmorgan.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
FE 8 reference = WIN

Also, the name would fit. "Amelia" somehow makes me think about something small and cute. 8D

[identity profile] rosenblut.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
I would just change Romano's name from Lovino to Lavinio, because it would make much more sense, as it is a real Italian name, and would have a deep historical meaning.
Vargas is not an Italian surname, but I sort of grew fond of it, so I would keep it :>

[identity profile] futuresimple.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 11:38 am (UTC)(link)

Adaś Kwiatkowski (adaś is a cute way to call Adam, and Kwiatkowki mean something like "flower-ish one") for Feliks Łukasiewicz

Francis = Pierre, Jean

and GABI for Erzsébet, because this is a unisex name in Hungary

but to tell the truth I don't mind how the are called because they still sound cool in my ears :D

I never liked how England's and America's names both started with "A" because when reading a fanfic with human names I would get confused as to who's doing what. I should just read more carefully. I like both of their names, but if I could change one, I like the name Sam for America. I know it wouldn't work because of Uncle Sam, but I know so many Sams, it's such a common name over here! Plus, this one Sam is just, the absolute embodiment of the stereotypical white guy...

[identity profile] franceismyhomie.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Francis should be Francois since that's basically the French form of the name Francis.

As odd as it sounds... I actually like a lot of the Hetalia names... except maybe Berwald. Berwald makes me think of a rollypolly bear.

[identity profile] nighty-sha.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Francis is a french name, a very common one. (Perfect for the one who represents France, if you ask me.)
