[Fancomic] America + Food = FAIL

Title: The 5-Second Rule, Chinese Take-Out, Salmonella Outbreak
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] pompi
Characters: America, Canada, China
Rating: G
Warnings: None... unless doodle quality art and bad handwriting burns the eyes. D'8
Summary: Random gag comic. America is an idiot when it comes to food... and soon suffers the consequences. The last two 4-koma are based off the recent peanut recall in the U.S.

Some news references from Google, Yahoo!, and New York Times.

Speech bubbles are read left to right, but the panels are still read going down, like a 4-koma. ^^;; I'm sorry if my handwriting is difficult to read. If you want me to decipher, let me know. D8

Edit: I fixed it to 5-second rule. But it was originally the 3-second rule. I guess there are variations? Original image.

I'm not sure if other countries have the 5-second rule (which is when you drop food, it's still okay to eat if you pick it up before five seconds pass). America pays more attention to the burger on the floor than to the apologizing Canada. Poor Canada.

Real Chinese food and American-Chinese food are completely different (in my opinion). I have observed that most Americans prefer the American-Chinese food (mostly oily stir-fried food, such as sweet and sour pork, beef and broccoli, orange chicken, etc.). When they eat real Chinese food (if they ever), they're generally disappointed in the neutral/milder/healthier(?) taste. XD

There's a peanut recall in the U.S. due to a salmonella outbreak. A peanut plant in Georgia is said to be responsible. The plant sent peanuts to Canada, but upon inspection, Canada said that the peanuts were not suitable for consumption and sent them back to be destroyed. Yet here we are... eating contaminated peanuts.

asdfghjk; The art quality clearly gets worse as we go down. Apologizes. I needed to get these out before I forgot. I'm not used to doing things based off current events. D8

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I-I love American Chinese food. But then again I also like carnival food and McDonald's. >>

...this is all so true. XD oh America.

My mom and I actually spent like 20 minutes trying to find out if the peanut butter we had was contaminated. and it actually wasn't. lol.

(also, I was told it was the 30-second rule... ahaha...)

I don't blame you, carnie food is GREAT.

Anything that fits in the fryer will DO. 8D

[identity profile] speria.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OH ALFRED. Why don't you ever listen to Matt?

Great comics!

AHH the 5 second rule rocks. XD I've executed it a few times. Luckily though, I usually don't drop my food very often, and the few times I have was on a clean surface LOL.

Anything more than 5 seconds though sounds...disgusting... LOL

[identity profile] bubblegumgeisha.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
DEAR GOD I LOVE YOU. All these are SOOOOOOO true (especially the 5 second rule one)!!!!!

[identity profile] lynn-pryderi.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends what floor. If I drop anything on my bedroom floor, it's free game. 8D But if it's like the school floors, or anywhere I don't know whose feet have been there, then never mind. XD

And yeah, real everything food is different from American food. I heard that it was because when a lot of immigrants came here, they had to improvise their traditional foods with what ingredients were here, and had to be able to sell them to boot. So somehow we got the greasy foods...but...I eat them anyways. I figure if someone eats it regularly somewhere, it can't be that bad.

On that note, I was eating peanut butter just this morning, and I did pause to think about the salmonella outbreak...but...I kept eating it. OTL

[identity profile] fegie.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
There is no five second rule, America! Watch MythBusters!

Bwaha, poor China (now i need to have real Chinese food) & Canada. But Canada has salmonella-sensing powers; ooh!

[identity profile] rouka-wolf.livejournal.com 2009-02-05 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
the 5 seconds rule doesn't exist here (mexico), but we have a idiom when the food falls to the grown: "don't eat it!! the devil licked it!" and if you still eat it, then you're gross XD
i'm agree about american-chinese food or mexican-chinese food ¬_¬ is just so... fating. Real chinese food use more vegetables and less oil

I have to ask, what is orange chicken? I have, in all my life of living in a Chinese-predominated country, never tasted orange chicken... ._.

xD I remember picking a Mentos off the school floor (which was just a little dusty), and all my friends were like "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww". I think it's okay so long as it's not muddy or sticky though. xD

[identity profile] orangetic-tac.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It may be the 5-second rule or the 3-second rule but I'm pretty sure it's universal.

It varies from country to country, I think, depending on their aversion to germs. My russian grandpa called it the 7-second rule. My friend from Turkey called it the 6-second rule.

I think it just amounts to the however-long-it-takes-you-to-snatch-it-up-rule.

Ohnoes!! Canada couldn't save him..............

[identity profile] loxaris.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
These are so very nice and funny, very good work! ♥
And well, I must confess I totally didn't know about the 5-second rule so your note at the end saved me! XD Guess that's because we don't have it here where I live. ^^ I also didn't know about the peanut recall in the U.S. to be honest, but well, that's just me neglecting current world events a bit I guess. orz

[identity profile] chainedxkitsune.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
The five second rule works with everything! (But pudding)

I loved these though, they're funny because they're true!

5 SECONDS

[identity profile] vitaminvirus.livejournal.com 2009-05-21 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
i so live by that rule xD

[identity profile] shayrazor.livejournal.com 2009-05-29 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I use the 5-second rule. It makes the food taste better.

[identity profile] eikomakimachi.livejournal.com 2009-06-14 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
lol, the 5-min rule is everywhere!!! XD

And REAL Chinese food is so much better D:! (And no, I don't eat dogs or lizards =P)

[identity profile] pureraindrop.livejournal.com 2009-06-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
This is kind of true.
But I just found out about chinese-american food recently and well, I was into denial. But Chinese food is probably worth it.

------
Thank God I don't eat peanut.

[identity profile] paranoiaplease.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
