[discussion+q&a?] What makes you interested in Hetalia?

Umm...this is technically my first post here.

I want to ask everybody here; what makes you interested on starting Hetalia when you first heard of it?

Is it because of the bishonen-s?
Is it because of the unique theme?
Is it because of the popularity?
Is it because of the funny theme?
Is it because of the BL?

Well I personally interested on Hetalia because of the unique theme, and people are saying it was funny (My favorite genre of manga is comedy). I'm not into BL and bishonens (I'm a devoted Yuri and Moe fangirl) but the hilarious and unique theme really made me interested.

(Note that this is more to 'Why I started Hetalia' not 'Why I love Hetalia')

I'm just asking! Sorry mods if this is not allowed! *bows*

It's 'cause I like history and hetalia have awesome plot.
I want to known went the country turn to human what would they will do.

I guess what makes me interested in Hetalia is the theme. The reason I started Hetalia in the first place is the history theme. I'm a world history fag. lD I also like the comedy. Another thing that keeps me interested in APH are the awesome fanfics and fanarts in the fandom. I swear there are so many talented fangirls (and fanboys XD) here. /jealousss XDDD

[identity profile] midori-lover.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
lol I read your note as: (Note that this is not 'Why I started Hetalia' but 'Why I love Hetalia') lD I need to learn how to read.

Anyways I started Hetalia because of the history lessons rofl. XD Plus my friends who were into it before me were shipping countries that looked really hot. I couldn't resist. :'D

Hmmmmmm~

It was March 2008. I was not long back from China and still living on 4chan for entertainment, on placement year yet to start my new job.
The APH thread was on about thread 7 in /cm/ and I saw a particularly gorgeous piece of art, so I looked at it and found out that it was two guys called 'Japan' and 'England', so I went lolwut and looked into it.

And as a former International Relations undergraduate, I thought it was extremely relevant to my interests.

So, in actuality, yes. It was the pretty boys that dragged me in, but once I'd actually found out what it was, I stayed for the lulz and Goddamn it, the history lessons too.

extremely relevant to my interests

Yeah, I tell myself that too. Hahaha!

I started Hetalia because of the theme. Countries as people? Brilliant.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
I came for the the lulz and the wtf factor, and stayed for the lulz and the moe. :D I've always loved history, especially the little tidbits and anecdotes that Hetalia often deals with, so I pretty much had to check Hetalia out when I first read about it. And of course as a former English major and sort-of medievalist I was very curious to see how it portrays England & Co. :D

(I don't particularly care about how the characters look - I don't even think they're bishounen in canon :D I mean, they're terribly cute and moe, but not what I'd call pretty. :D)

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Portrayed, even. *facepalm* I spik english gud rly.

[identity profile] silverkraze.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Because of moe-ness...... no, just kidding. =w=
Hetalia characters have interesting characteristic! I'm surprised how can author create so charming personality to each characters!

Hetalia has been making me in to history.

I try to think it's not BL but failed. LOL XDDDDDD

[identity profile] loupgaros.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
ell the theme looked promising. Countries represented as people? Interesting! It reminded me of 17th and 18th century European satire that chose to depict each country as a personification and I am not only a history geek, but a satire geek :P

Then after watching the first episode I wanted to see more because I thought the world meeting reminded me of the UN. Then shortly after I found I rather liked some of the characters and their traits (I still red-lined a few though XD) and then stuck with it.

It should be noted that I do not generally like anime. I don't get the concepts of bishounen or moe or anything like that to a great degree (the only term I get is tsundere because it is a concept I come across in a lot of fiction kinda, the loner who just wants someone to acknowledge him but remains aloof to make people think he is strong). I just choose not to get that deep into it by choice, focussing on the charactrs and the history for preference. Although I do confess a weakness for the cosplay aspect, but that is simply because I love dressing up and I already do it with a different fandom :P

[identity profile] futuresimple.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I was attracted by the character designs at first - each of them looked like they had their own unique personality. Turned out I was right about this when I found out they are countries |D So it was probably the theme's fault - I'm a huge fan of foreign cultures and languages, so I was like "MOAR INFO ON COUNTRIES OMG DO WANT". I just love how the subject is endless and this manga can pratically go on forever and (hopefully) never get boring. And also, as a retarded anglophile, I instantly fell in love with England - he perfectly represents everything I love about this country.

The theme/the satire.
Being a major South Park fan, I love things that poke fun at RL events, and I love animanga...
and Hetalia combined both of these things for me + more, therefore I became obsessed instantly 8D

[identity profile] rebornhayatofan.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i first got into it because the cosplays i came upon were AMAZING! and i do love history, and im one of those people that HAS TO KNOW THINGS or thay get really frustrated (yandare much, yeah i am>_<) so i guess it was the way they looked that got me into it but if your into hetalia you probibly got into it for the calture and for the love of history, i think that almost goes without saying (really i mean i think ive herd it a billion times by EVERY hetaalia fan)

[identity profile] azurewhite.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I started by hating Hetalia.

I thought it was something overrated that every single iconmaker was doing just because everyone was a fag or something. And I decided to investigate that one day. I wanted to find out why this - whatever it was - was so popular.

And I found out, and fell in love with it.

It got me wanting to do history for my subject choices this year. But now if I ask myself what makes me interested in Hetalia, is because it's history. Furthermore the insight to it and how they manage to make something I once thought boring into something so animated - Awesome happened.

[identity profile] aibi-chan.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with azurewhite, I really had no interest in the show, everyone seemed to like it and thought it looked stupid :/

But after I saw some BL fanart, I looked at the show. It was love at first sight <3

[identity profile] soraryuu.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It was the theme. I'm always looking for unusual things to read and Hetalia certainly sounded weird enough! ^^ Even though I'm a BL and bishonen fangirl, I did not know about those aspects until I started reading it.

[identity profile] historyblitz.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What got me interested was the history. I am a history major in college and so I about had a flippin heart-attack when I finally found the series. Match made in nerd-heaven.

And then I completely fell in love with the comedy, the style and the characters.

[identity profile] sleepywaltz.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I was obsessed with countries of Europe and Asia for a while, as well as current events/history/geography. All my friends thought I was nuts, so I was all alone in my obsession. Then I found Hetalia and immediately, the concept of countries as people drew me in!

I hate to tell my now-Hetalia-loving friends I told you so, but...
I told you so. &hearts

[identity profile] mcmitters.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, at first, I was disturbed by the idea of Hetalia. I was disturbed by the fact that people would ship countries. (this was right around the time Hetalia was getting popular and I couldn't avoid seeing pictures plastered everywhere across the internet) But on a whim one afternoon I started to watch the anime.... And I loved it.

But what kept me in was the history. It's a series that lets me be a history geek and an otaku. So perhaps maybe that is making me feel a little better about going into total fangirl mode over it. I've actually learned lots of stuff I would have otherwise never learned, and has sparked a new interest in me in history.

[identity profile] deaden-music.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
'Cos i'm a history geek, and i was interested as to how the nations were portrayed based on their country's stereotypes :D So yeah, i guess that can be counted as the theme?

Of course, the bishonens were a bonus as well XD

[identity profile] drcalvin.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
because of the bishonen-s? Moeblobs, they were more cute than sexy to me in the beginning

Is it because of the unique theme? History-fan - check. Open canon - check. Possibility to language-squee over German - check

Is it because of the funny theme? I like weird humor

Is it because of the BL? Yup. I honestly don't think I could have stomached the character of Nazi-era Germany if it wasn't offset with both funny and homosexuality, which the real nazis didn't approve of

[identity profile] raburabu-ame.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly speaking, I started because it was really popular and all over 4chan. I was curious so I took a peek at what it was all about.

I was instantly hooked after reading some of the strips and here I am today.

[identity profile] dainty-polka.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I pretty much saw LOTS of fanarts of Hetalia on Devinatart... so i went: WTH is this Imma go check it out. D8

I started watching through the Anime first, and I thought the concept was really unique and educational.

And then by accident I found out this whole manga and LJ community thing.... and I got addicted. D8 *owned*

I never like politics and history... but Hetalia got me interested.... and also lessen my agony and pains when doing history homework. >:U

One day on my DA inbox came up an Hetalia meme and when I opened it the first character that was up was a certain "Italy" and I was lolwut my country? the next drawing was a germanyxitaly and I got wtf?
So I went to look it up and I discovered that it was a manga with my country as protagonist and I was hell yeah. I love when people talk about my country and make fun of it, so it was perfect XD
Only after the BL factor hit me as I was reading the cleaning out the storage part.
So you can say I first got into hetalia for the funny/unique theme.

[identity profile] ex-kleinod.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I came for THE DRAMA and the lulz, I'm staying for a couple of characters and the lulz.

Can't really say "for the history" since all history aspects I like are pretty much... blatantly wrong in Hetalia. Prussia = GDR: German history class EPIC failure. Germania at least borderline-accurate nation-tan: ancient history class fail too. So well, it can't really be for the history. The stereotypes are amusing though.

History geek

I came for the history, stayed for the yaoi.

LOL! No other truth has been said so clearly :D

[identity profile] mcelligots-pool.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a fanart of a few countries, I can't remember which at the moment, and after reading the artists comments, found out the basic plotline "Hetalia is about countries personified"

My first thought was that France and England would SO be hating each other.

Then I wanted to see how Canada was portrayed,

Then I got sucked into the BL fanworks D:

So yah, sucked in by the history goodness, and chained to the fandom by fanwork XD

[identity profile] boscaresque.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I have kind of an odd, tl;dr story.

I've loved history and political satire my whole life, and for my senior project in high school, I decided to do a report on political cartoons. As I got into my project, my favorites were always the ones where the countries were personified. It just made their points a whole lot clearer to me. And so, as my own way of studying history, I expanded on the characters of those old cartoons and made up my own. I went as far as giving them character designs and rather extensive personality charts. I started to really become obsessed with the idea, but I thought I was alone, which didn't make it nearly as fun.

It was pretty inevitable that I'd discover Hetalia eventually. At first I got kind of mad, because I was never a fan of anime. I'd always actually had a pretty negative opinion of it. So when I found this whole anime revolving around a concept I'd been obsessed with for ages, I had mixed feelings. But eventually, the excitement of everything that is Hetalia won me over. Ultimately it was the fandom. I was like, "OMG, I can ship nations together and not feel weird about it."

That's basically it.:)
