[Fanart; Quesion] THE TEACHER BECOMES THE STUDENT.

Title: So, question.
Author/Artist: Me
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Russia, Belarus, Ukraine
Rating: PG
Warnings: Rambling, excessive fangirlish nitpicking
Summary: No history lesson today, just a little something that's been puzzling me for a couple of days now. I thought maybe some of you better-informed fans could enlighten me on the subject.

My question is thus: Do we have any sort of canon confirmation thus far as to the relationship between Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine? Personally, I'm tempted to think of them as siblings or cousins of a sort.

Because come on, hilarious.

But then that would probably make Ivan the youngest, wouldn't it, since the Grand Duchy of Moscow which eventually became Russia developed after Kievan Rus'. Or I wonder if maybe the early Slavic groups would have been an entirely different entity along the lines of Germania or Ancient Greece, which would go along nicely with the rather interesting history of Ukraine being referred to as "Little Russia".

Families are great.

And then of course there's fanon's interpretation of Russia and Belarus' relationship, which is just...a whole new bag of hammers.

Srsly, how weirded out should I actually be by this pairing? D:

I know I'm overthinking this and it's of like NO importance in the big scheme of things, but any thoughts? Interesting factoids about early Eastern Slavic history? Ponderings on translating other national/ethnic ties into lulzy Hetalia character interactions? It seems the longer I hang about this fandom, the more I desperately want to learn about the entire world. ;___;

Also, if any history-geek fanartists out there would care to share their favorite period costume reference sites, I would be most sexily obliged.

The East Slavs evolved into the Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian peoples.

Wikipedia has spoken. I love your style. And i like to see Ukraine as the older, and Belarus as the youngest.

[identity profile] atiko.livejournal.com 2008-11-25 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been wondering about the exact same thing. All I know is that Belarus is apparently Ivan's older sister (and she adores him loads?)... so maybe Ukraine as another sister isn't too far off.

Poor Ukraine, no Christmas for her. Ivan, u so mean. D=
(You, however, continue to be awesome. I hope it's not getting repetitive hearing that from me? 8D)

Also, if any history-geek fanartists out there would care to share their favorite period costume reference sites, I would be most sexily obliged.

SECONDED.

I especially love the costumes.org :> it's a bit hard to navigate there at first tho.

You're welcome :D'

[rant] D:' something I was looking for like mad and couldn't find where Brazil's military uniforms designs (I found illustrations from late 1800's to 1922 tho, but I wanted the uniform it used on WWII ;A;' so I could draw some things referenced from it... but I failed (found some interesting photos tho) [/rant]

Ahhh you're the person who drew the Vietnam war thing!! OH GOD X'D I like the style.

Well.... Belarus wants to be Annexed into Russia, right? And they're both creepy, so they can have a creepy wedding with decapitated crows and creepy children. Yaaay Bobby Barrows.

And for all I know, I don't really get the yandere thing because looking back at Russian History, Russia thought other ethnic groups were for the birds.

YES. Also, ROFL SO HARD at the Soviet slumber parties. I so want to see that now. Complaining about Russia getting all snobby 'cause ~ooh look at me, I'm so industrialized~ or something, ahaha.

But I definitely agree that they need more attention, I didn't know there WERE female characters at all for the longest time. :(

I'd love to see more Hetalia yuri. Actually, I'd love to see ANY Hetalia yuri and more love for Hetalia girls, compared to boys, they get so little attention (besides Hungary, but even she loses to guys in terms of fandom!screentime) I know they are mostly minor characters, but still, I'd love to see more of them.

[identity profile] confictionery.livejournal.com 2008-11-25 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been told that Ukraine is Russia's older sister, and that Natalya, Belarus, is his little sister and she's like VANYA I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU. (Does Ukraine have a character name yet, I wonder?)

[identity profile] heldrad.livejournal.com 2008-11-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
yay! I've been wondering the same... and I really like Belarus x3~ and the fact that she has a brother complex~ heheh

[livejournal.com profile] ofmylife is right, Ukraine is the oldest sister, Russia is the middle, and Belarus is the younger sister.

I'm partial to Bela/Russia, I just drew it recently myself. :3

[identity profile] wistwisp.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
OH GOSH. THE MIDDLE PICTURE. Their dialogue made me think of something I read in one of my history textbooks: that one reason Russia ultimately enforced enserfment during the Age of Absolutism was because peasants traditionally ran away to Ukraine during hard times.

And I want to see more of Ukraine; she is so adorable!

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Also seconding [livejournal.com profile] ofmylife on the "Ukraine as the elder sister" bit.

Please take this input with a giant shaker of salt. Can barely read basic Japanese, and I rely HEAVILY on the presence of hiragana/katakana (._.) [/fail]

She's appeared/mentioned several times in Himaruya's blog (including the trading card illustration. From what I can sort of gather, she get's caught up in the Slavic "happy" tiems.

In not-so chronological order, collected posts where she appears!
- http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-400.html (Text only, the second paragraph; Ukraine has an adorable hair cut, but I don't understand the previous line)
- http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-69.html (sketches for the trading card designs of Hong Kong and Ukraine. Not much to see here)
- http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-78.html (fifth question in; She and Latvia share similar problems thanks to Russia)

Probably more related posts, but I haven't found them. Also, remember: SHAKER OF SALT.

[identity profile] jali-jali.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
This post is just too interesting to be passed out!

Well, personally I agree with [livejournal.com profile] ohmylife, I can't really see countries have sibling relationships as in "siblings". More like uhh....really close neighbors or something? Or it's just me being biased because I'm a fan of Russia/Belarus coupling (and it's easier to imagine them without them being siblings lol).
But I approve of Ukraine being like Russia's older sister. ^ ^ That role fits her so well.

[identity profile] kyo-starr.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Belarus' expression in the first one xD You have a really neat style~ And the second pic... poor Ukraine! They've have been having quite a few sibling disputes lately... like the gas issue (http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_content.php?id=796175), the Sevastopol (http://ukraineanalysis.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/russia-and-ukraine-dispute-over-sevastopol/) question, and the EU being reluctant to call the Holodomor (starving millions of Ukrainians in the '30s) outright genocide (http://www.kyivpost.com/nation/30562) so as not to offend Russia. (Even the EU won't stand up to Russia. Yikes.)

Y'know, I guess I find more-than-platonic relationships between the "related" nation-tans a little hard to stomach, like the brother complexes (Belarus & Russia, Liechtenstein & Switzerland) and pairings with former father figure-types (Canada & France, US & UK, S.Italy & Spain)... but that's just me. However, countries' relationships change over time, and they're not really people per se (like [livejournal.com profile] ofmylife said), so it's not as wrong as it'd be otherwise.

Yes I'm pretty sure that's it. Belarus was having some jealousy issues. Lithuania gets showered in the love that Belarus want greatly so she feels murderously jealous of him~ But the funny thing is that they portray Liet having a major crush on Belarus. Or so what I've heard/seen in a comic. I may be wrong...

[identity profile] princessarisa.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ah I found it. It was in the Pact of Steel comic~

[identity profile] kyo-starr.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see~ Thanks!

[identity profile] astro_knight.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I feel bad because I don't have any neato links. ;; B-but LOL RUSSIA CANCELLING CHRISTMAS. :|

[identity profile] princessarisa.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I always love your drawings. ♥
Coincidentally I just learned about Kievan Rus on Monday. XD
Belarus is definantly the oldest, cuz I'm pretty sure that the Slavs migrated there on their way east. Kiev was originally in Ukraine so she would be the middle sibling~
And that would make Russia the youngest? but he's so much older looking than Ukraine, I get confused D:

I think that RussiaxBelarus is strangely cute. She's the only female I can really see Ivan in a relationship with. Though it does seem sorta incest-y once you think about it.

That middle pic is pure lulz. X3
That's it. I'm canceling Christmas for you.

[identity profile] radittz.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
omg, I love your style so much !
I really like siblings theory XD and want to see Ukraine in manga(she's much cuter than Belarus XP) ;__;
I see all Slavs as one blonde family XD esp with Ivan and Feliks opposite personalities :P
You know, there is a legend of "Lech Czech and Rus" that every Polish learns in elementary school XD
from Wikipedia:
"In the Polish version of the legend, three brothers went hunting together but each of them followed a different prey and eventually they all traveled in different directions. Rus went to the east, Čech headed to the west to settle on the Říp Mountain rising up from the Bohemian hilly countryside, while Lech traveled to the north until he came across a magnificent white eagle guarding her nest. Startled but impressed by this spectacle, he decided to settle there. He named his settlement (gród) Gniezno (Polish adjective from gniazdo, or "nest") and adopted the White Eagle as his coat-of-arms which remains a symbol of Poland to this day"

this is one of history themes that i want to draw with Hetalia characters xD

[identity profile] thierrys.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
I unfortunately have no answer to your question, but...

is your icon Sokka?? *goggles*

[identity profile] youkofujima.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
According to the trading cards, the Slavic family is as such: Ukraine is the eldest sister, Russia the middle child, and Belarus the youngest of the three. The two girls have dialog that says:

Ukraine: "Russia-chan, you've changed a lot from when you were still with me..."
Belarus: "Nii-san, Nii-san, Nii-san, Nii-san..." (older brother)

That second picture is hilarious.

[identity profile] madhatterarashi.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been wondering about their relationship too, since I actually noticed while surfing trough the net some hints of Russia/Belarus (Or maybe it's just me that see hints even where there isn't any). In Himaruya blog I found out this image, which is actually a sort of "relationship chart":
http://blog-imgs-24.fc2.com/h/i/m/himaruya/siryo3.jpg
I can't read half of Himaruya's handwriting, but toward Ucraine that's clearly written "older sister" and toward Lituhania and Poland(?)it said "annoyed". Toward Russia there are two hearts, so I thought that it was indicating some kind of love interest (In Hungary's relationship chart, toward Austria it's draw a heart) but then I learned from other users'comments that they're actually brother and sister. So, is Belarus actually infatuated or has just an exagerated affection towards her brother?
I'm getting lost... >_<

[identity profile] lecumedesjour-s.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Belarus is admire his "brother" Russia blindly. This kind of expression between brothers and sisters are not so special in Japanese non-fictional thing (slightly incestly) but it's not big deal if it's platonic.
In this chart, Russia to Belarus written "little bit scary"...even Russia got scared for his sister's blindly affectionXD
Ukraine worried about her sister, but from Belarus to Uaraine, "Nii-san became hate me because of you, big sister".

In canon, Lithuania loves Belarus but she almost hate him.
(Because Lithuania is Russia's favorite)

[identity profile] madhatterarashi.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank you very much for clearing up my confusion! My japanese is quite limited and I'm absolutly not used to handwriting, so I managed to understand only few things. Actually, to me Russia and Belarus looks good together so...fufufu ;P
Russia being scared by his sister's affection is quite...unexpected! XD And I absolutly didn't know that Lithuania was in love with Belarus! Woah, so many informations you gave me, thank you!^^

Well, I'm actually a big fan of the RussiaxBelarus couple, but in Hetalia fandom, I have the tendecy to base my pairing of historical/political/that stuff potential and ignore characters' genders and relationships unless it matches, like AustriaxHungary
