[Fanart; Quesion] THE TEACHER BECOMES THE STUDENT.
Title: So, question.
Author/Artist: Me
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Russia, Belarus, Ukraine
Rating: PG
Warnings: Rambling, excessive fangirlish nitpicking
Summary: No history lesson today, just a little something that's been puzzling me for a couple of days now. I thought maybe some of you better-informed fans could enlighten me on the subject.
My question is thus: Do we have any sort of canon confirmation thus far as to the relationship between Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine? Personally, I'm tempted to think of them as siblings or cousins of a sort.

Because come on, hilarious.
But then that would probably make Ivan the youngest, wouldn't it, since the Grand Duchy of Moscow which eventually became Russia developed after Kievan Rus'. Or I wonder if maybe the early Slavic groups would have been an entirely different entity along the lines of Germania or Ancient Greece, which would go along nicely with the rather interesting history of Ukraine being referred to as "Little Russia".

Families are great.
And then of course there's fanon's interpretation of Russia and Belarus' relationship, which is just...a whole new bag of hammers.

Srsly, how weirded out should I actually be by this pairing? D:
I know I'm overthinking this and it's of like NO importance in the big scheme of things, but any thoughts? Interesting factoids about early Eastern Slavic history? Ponderings on translating other national/ethnic ties into lulzy Hetalia character interactions? It seems the longer I hang about this fandom, the more I desperately want to learn about the entire world. ;___;
Also, if any history-geek fanartists out there would care to share their favorite period costume reference sites, I would be most sexily obliged.

Wikipedia has spoken. I love your style. And i like to see Ukraine as the older, and Belarus as the youngest.

Poor Ukraine, no Christmas for her. Ivan, u so mean. D=
(You, however, continue to be awesome. I hope it's not getting repetitive hearing that from me? 8D)

Well.... Belarus wants to be Annexed into Russia, right? And they're both creepy, so they can have a creepy wedding with decapitated crows and creepy children. Yaaay Bobby Barrows.
And for all I know, I don't really get the yandere thing because looking back at Russian History, Russia thought other ethnic groups were for the birds.

I'm partial to Bela/Russia, I just drew it recently myself. :3

The "Little Russia" thing must be as annoying to her as it seems to be to some actual citizens of the Ukraine, then. Crazy.
no subject
And I want to see more of Ukraine; she is so adorable!

Please take this input with a giant shaker of salt. Can barely read basic Japanese, and I rely HEAVILY on the presence of hiragana/katakana (._.) [/fail]
She's appeared/mentioned several times in Himaruya's blog (including the trading card illustration. From what I can sort of gather, she get's caught up in the Slavic "happy" tiems.
In not-so chronological order, collected posts where she appears!
- http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-400.html (Text only, the second paragraph; Ukraine has an adorable hair cut, but I don't understand the previous line)
- http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-69.html (sketches for the trading card designs of Hong Kong and Ukraine. Not much to see here)
- http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-78.html (fifth question in; She and Latvia share similar problems thanks to Russia)

Probably more related posts, but I haven't found them. Also, remember: SHAKER OF SALT.

Well, personally I agree with
But I approve of Ukraine being like Russia's older sister. ^ ^ That role fits her so well.

Y'know, I guess I find more-than-platonic relationships between the "related" nation-tans a little hard to stomach, like the brother complexes (Belarus & Russia, Liechtenstein & Switzerland) and pairings with former father figure-types (Canada & France, US & UK, S.Italy & Spain)... but that's just me. However, countries' relationships change over time, and they're not really people per se (like

Or so what I've heard/seen in a comic. I may be wrong...no subject

This is part of why I asked, because while I realize it's a fairly cracky concept we're working with here anyway, the fanbase for Russia and Belarus seemed sort of...at odds with the familial associations I was inclined to draw between them. But then, I tend to over analyze things in which I'm interested, so feel free to ignore me. XD;

Coincidentally I just learned about Kievan Rus on Monday. XD
Belarus is definantly the oldest, cuz I'm pretty sure that the Slavs migrated there on their way east. Kiev was originally in Ukraine so she would be the middle sibling~
And that would make Russia the youngest?
but he's so much older looking than Ukraine, I get confused D:I think that RussiaxBelarus is strangely cute. She's the only female I can really see Ivan in a relationship with. Though it does seem sorta incest-y once you think about it.
That middle pic is pure lulz. X3
That's it. I'm canceling Christmas for you.

I really like siblings theory XD and want to see Ukraine in manga(she's much cuter than Belarus XP) ;__;
I see all Slavs as one blonde family XD esp with Ivan and Feliks opposite personalities :P
You know, there is a legend of "Lech Czech and Rus" that every Polish learns in elementary school XD
from Wikipedia:
"In the Polish version of the legend, three brothers went hunting together but each of them followed a different prey and eventually they all traveled in different directions. Rus went to the east, Čech headed to the west to settle on the Říp Mountain rising up from the Bohemian hilly countryside, while Lech traveled to the north until he came across a magnificent white eagle guarding her nest. Startled but impressed by this spectacle, he decided to settle there. He named his settlement (gród) Gniezno (Polish adjective from gniazdo, or "nest") and adopted the White Eagle as his coat-of-arms which remains a symbol of Poland to this day"
this is one of history themes that i want to draw with Hetalia characters xD

is your icon Sokka?? *goggles*

Ukraine: "Russia-chan, you've changed a lot from when you were still with me..."
Belarus: "Nii-san, Nii-san, Nii-san, Nii-san..." (older brother)
That second picture is hilarious.

Also, that dialogue is fantastic. I need to see these two interact in the comic one day.

I can't read half of Himaruya's handwriting, but toward Ucraine that's clearly written "older sister" and toward Lituhania and Poland(?)it said "annoyed". Toward Russia there are two hearts, so I thought that it was indicating some kind of love interest (In Hungary's relationship chart, toward Austria it's draw a heart) but then I learned from other users'comments that they're actually brother and sister. So, is Belarus actually infatuated or has just an exagerated affection towards her brother?
I'm getting lost... >_<
no subject
In this chart, Russia to Belarus written "little bit scary"...even Russia got scared for his sister's blindly affectionXD
Ukraine worried about her sister, but from Belarus to Uaraine, "Nii-san became hate me because of you, big sister".
In canon, Lithuania loves Belarus but she almost hate him.
(Because Lithuania is Russia's favorite)
no subject
Russia being scared by his sister's affection is quite...unexpected! XD And I absolutly didn't know that Lithuania was in love with Belarus! Woah, so many informations you gave me, thank you!^^
