The Day the World Turned Upside Down Pt. 1/3
Hello everyone! I'm pretty much a stalker lurker of this community and this is my first real post. I got this idea from a video I watched on youtube for APH that showed Alfred and Arthur in Revolutionary War uniforms! This little ficlet is broken into three parts and is about how the British General Cornwallis refused to appear to present his sword(a sign of surrender) to Washington however I've added in our dear little nation-tan's to turn the rude gesture into an angst ridden one! XD

However the terms of the surrender require Arthur to present his sword to Alfred, an act he refuses be apart of...
The Day the World Turned Upside Down
Arthur leaned over the window pane thankful that none of his subordinates were present in the room to see him lose control like this. There was no one in the streets, no one dared leave their houses with the smell of death and gun powder still lingering in the air around Yorktown from the battle.
The battle he had just lost.
The thought sent his stomach swirling and Arthur would have retched again had he the food in his stomach to do so.
His army was blocked in, surrounded on all sides by his troops. The blond man wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and settled his red uniform back into place. It was the only thing he could do to keep his hands from shaking. The mere thought of what came next made it hard for him to breathe, as custom when the British surrendered he would have to present his sword to the Colonies commander.
Arthur took in a shuddering breath.
He would have to present his sword to Alfred who hadn't spoken to since...well since the day his Declaration came. But Arthur had passed it off as merely a squabble, something he could easily contain and then everything could go back to how it was. Sure, he thought to himself as he clutched his hands tightly behind his back, I may have been...possessive but what parent wouldn't be? I practically raised Alfred and too see him fraternizing with those other nations! He had even gone so far as to ask France for assistance which of course he leaped at the chance to take me down the lecherous bastard.
But there was nothing he could do now.
A knock startled the green eyed man as a voice called in, “Sir? Your escort is waiting.”
Arthur's heart fluttered as he tried to keep his voice calm, “I'm not going. Give my sword to Brigadier O'Hara. Let him present it to Washington...and Alfred.”
“But sir-”
“You have your orders.”
“...yes sir.”
Only when he was sure he was alone did Arthur released his tight posture and quietly leaned his forehead, covering his eyes, against his palm as the blond man let out half a sigh and half sob of shame of his own cowardice...and of loss.
Alfred will be free now, just like he wanted. He's out done me. A parent is suppose to be glad when a child outshines him, but this isn't what they probably had in mind. Arthur smiled bitterly as he heard the faint sounds of the drums playing the march “The World Turned Upside Down.”
