The Day the World Turned Upside Down Pt. 1/3
Hello everyone! I'm pretty much a stalker lurker of this community and this is my first real post. I got this idea from a video I watched on youtube for APH that showed Alfred and Arthur in Revolutionary War uniforms! This little ficlet is broken into three parts and is about how the British General Cornwallis refused to appear to present his sword(a sign of surrender) to Washington however I've added in our dear little nation-tan's to turn the rude gesture into an angst ridden one! XD

Summary: On October 17th 1781 Cornwallis agreed to surrender unconditionally during the Siege of Yorktown, this surrender would eventually be the key needed for the American victory during the Revolutionary War. However the terms of the surrender require Arthur to present his sword to Alfred, an act he refuses be apart of...
The Day the World Turned Upside Down
Arthur leaned over the window pane thankful that none of his subordinates were present in the room to see him lose control like this. There was no one in the streets, no one dared leave their houses with the smell of death and gun powder still lingering in the air around Yorktown from the battle.
The battle he had just lost.
The thought sent his stomach swirling and Arthur would have retched again had he the food in his stomach to do so.
His army was blocked in, surrounded on all sides by his troops. The blond man wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and settled his red uniform back into place. It was the only thing he could do to keep his hands from shaking. The mere thought of what came next made it hard for him to breathe, as custom when the British surrendered he would have to present his sword to the Colonies commander.
Arthur took in a shuddering breath.
He would have to present his sword to Alfred who hadn't spoken to since...well since the day his Declaration came. But Arthur had passed it off as merely a squabble, something he could easily contain and then everything could go back to how it was. Sure, he thought to himself as he clutched his hands tightly behind his back, I may have been...possessive but what parent wouldn't be? I practically raised Alfred and too see him fraternizing with those other nations! He had even gone so far as to ask France for assistance which of course he leaped at the chance to take me down the lecherous bastard.
But there was nothing he could do now.
A knock startled the green eyed man as a voice called in, “Sir? Your escort is waiting.”
Arthur's heart fluttered as he tried to keep his voice calm, “I'm not going. Give my sword to Brigadier O'Hara. Let him present it to Washington...and Alfred.”
“But sir-”
“You have your orders.”
“...yes sir.”
Only when he was sure he was alone did Arthur released his tight posture and quietly leaned his forehead, covering his eyes, against his palm as the blond man let out half a sigh and half sob of shame of his own cowardice...and of loss.
Alfred will be free now, just like he wanted. He's out done me. A parent is suppose to be glad when a child outshines him, but this isn't what they probably had in mind. Arthur smiled bitterly as he heard the faint sounds of the drums playing the march “The World Turned Upside Down.”

I can't wait for the rest of it. I'm glad I got a chance to see England's side of it; being an American, we don't really teach much of the other nation's views...on anything. At least not in my school. ;P
I'm excited for the rest. *flails arms*

That's the only issue I have. (I could be being too nit picky though...) England had that whole laize-faire (or however it was spelled) and left the colonists alone to fend for themselves. The reason the colonists wanted to become independent was due to the whole "taxation without representation" deal. England, while not really caring what happens to the colonists, did not want to lose the colonies because of the money it was making. (I think that how it went. It has been awhile since I did high school history.)
Still, I can't wait to see how this turns out. I like seeing other people's takes on historic events. Always interesting.
completely OT/random
Finally! Explanation for Washington DC license plates!
Don't mind me. I lived there during college and... yeah. >_>

Er, sorry to get all tl;dr and SRS BZNS on you. I'm just a history geek. Ignore it if you want! I don't want to cause wank.
more history 4 the masses
It started with the Stamps Act of 1765, it was King George's first attempt to directly tax use for stamps on legal documents, stuff of that nature and you had to have a tax stamp. Once they, the British, saw that the Stamp Act was doing nothing for there national debt, they enacted the Sugar Act of 1764 . Which was not used to regulate trade ( like the earlier Sugar and Molasses Act of 1733, but to raise revenue...it also listed specfic goods, like lumber being exported to england.
Then the last straw was the Tea Tax of May 10, 1773; this had a lot to do with tea as you guessed and the East India Company...anyway, I'm not going to talk you guys head off about this silly act, but it lead up to the boycott of British goods and the infamous Boston Tea Party, which happened December 16, 1773.
I just wanted to give more specific dates to what you were saying re_weird...hope ya don't mind and I hope my brain isn't failing me as to the dates and reasons of all the above.
Re: more history 4 the masses
