Aaah, so, my job consists of me teaching a bunch of half-braindead teenagers, and then sitting at my desk for a long, LONG period of time, of which I mostly spend doodling.

So, here's a bit of a doodle dump! Lots of doodles!

I drew this while thinking of the song "Red Faction" by MELL. Good song, seems to suit an over-zealous psycho America.

Turkey (G)


There's just something that seems to be...off...about his shoulders. Arggh.


UK (PG/obscene hand gesture)


I drew this after having a really bad start to a Monday. Why is this an obscene hand gesture? According to a British friend (whose mother was, surprisingly, French), it's because during the wars between England and France, the English were using bows while the French used crossbows. Still, the English had an upper hand (is what he said), and when the French captured Englishmen, they would cut off the archers' index and middle fingers so that they cannot draw back the bowstring anymore.

Thus, when the two sides faced each other off before battle, the English archers would hold up their two fingers like this to signify: "We still have our two fingers, and we're gonna KILL YOU."


China (G)


He doesn't walk, he saunters. Or glides.

I wanted to try and give Nii Nii a more Asian-looking face, and made his eyes more almond-shaped, and with heavier lids. He looks like he has huge hips, though. But then again, I always imagine the older nations to be slightly more androgynous.


Germany (PG)


SPRING TIME FOR HITLER AND GERMANYYYYYYY~~

I have no excuse. mumumugen showed me this video and I immediately thought "OH DEAR GOD GERMANY." After this, I went off and bought a reference book for uniforms.


Taiwan and Hong Kong (PG-13/some disturbing imagery)



In Mandarin, male-female fraternal twins are called "Dragon-Phoenix Born (Fetuses)." The dragon is the boy, the phoenix the girl. Legend is that the twins were lovers who could not be together in their past life and were thus born together in a womb in this life to be together.



Bound Feet
These two pics are two sets to a whole, though in the case of Taiwan, it is slightly scarier because women before 1920s China (and Chinese colonies) were considered ugly unless they had bound feet (the most beautiful being three inches in length). And Hong Kong...well, that's just my fetish.


I just wanted to draw them in modern clothing. HK looks stoned, though.

"PLUCK YEW/FUCK YOU" UK makes me ridiculously happy. XDDD

The English longbow was generally used by peasants, so the French army kind of disdained to instate them (they were known more for their heavy cavalry, mounted knights in full armor... and only nobles could afford the full armor). Longbows have a terrific draw and range, whereas the crossbows, while really powerful (enough to puncture armor), are only effective at a really short distance.

In some circles, it's believed that the index-middle finger combo + "Pluck Yew" (i.e. yew wood for the bow, "We can still pluck yew") is the precursor to the middle-finger + "Fuck You." But that's just historical hearsay. :D (Apparently there's a photo of Winston Churchill making this hand sign in the direction of Germany around the time of WWII...)

Man, then that sounds like it really put the French, especially the foot soldiers, at a disadvantage. O_O Rain of arrows showering down does not sound like fun at all.

I think I have seen a photo like that before, though the one I remember had Churchill's palm facing out? Does that count or is that a completely different gesture at that point?

- Actually, there's a Red Faction Hetalia video on Nico. Have you seen it? (ed; I think it's based off a Black Lagoon vid or something, but I'm pretty sure it uses that song...?)

- That's a really interesting tidbit about the French and English archers. I was aware of the English archery, but I didn't know about French crossbows and also the finger thing. I agree with kasugai_gummie concerning the usage of these weapons, though. *is a fantasy/history freak* Anyway, ahaha Arthur. I love his expression. ♥

AH! These are so pretty! Your style is really great, and you can draw all the different poses and expressions IN CHARACTER. I love them all, especially the Mediterranean family. Totally "awwed" right there. And China is purtyful. Effeminate men are so much fun to draw. And I'm Chinese, so I love it even more. The HK/Taiwan arts have really gorgeous concepts, and Russia's pics are really cute. Germany is a total ROFLMAO, and America and GB are positively hilarious!

I envy the general cleanliness of these sketches. Mine are so much messier! Color them all! Or would it be okay with you if I colored some? I find it hard to draw fanart. I love character designs, but I have never come up with my own concepts for fanart.

The Bound Feet pictures are so, so creepy. Oriental children put up for display - they make my skin crawl. Good job on conveying such a powerful emotion! I love the juxtaposition of West and East between the two pictures, too.

Honestly, I do better with analog than I do with digital, because there is just something about drawing on a tablet that does not have the drag of a pencil on paper...

Ohhh you noticed! Yes, there is an east-west contrast between the Taiwan and HK pictures. And I like to play around with the idea of "China Dolls."

Well, the artist says that Russia's hair parts on the right, and that's how I go along with it, and it's not really that consistent. I usually end up making him look like Yagami Light.

Aaah, so close--since I did just draw a pic of Russia with Laika recently. But the dog is actually Mitton, the mitten dog!^^/
