Pairings will become canon now? {Season 5 query}

Over at Tumblr, some people have been saying that Himaruya or some other authority over Hetalia said that certain pairings (i.e. USUK) are canon/will become canon in Season 5 or something like that.

I'm just wondering, is there any truth to this? Where'd they get this information?

Without a definite source, it sounds like some people are getting overexcited or spreading baseless rumours. In my eyes, having definite pairings would ruin a lot of the appeal of Hetalia since so many of the characters have had subtext or hints with so many other characters, even if some pairings would be more plausible than others. But even if some pairings suddenly became canon, I wouldn't stop shipping my favourites. I've never been much of a canon shipper in the first place. :P

I've heard no such sources for that. Unless someone gives/names a source and can point you in the direction of it, chances are it's a rumor.

I can sort of see where this rumor has originated from, but it's only that: a rumor. No pairing should ever become canon unless Himaruya says so; and I don't think he ever will.

No, I highly doubt anything will become canon. The tumblr fandom is known for getting over excited and sometimes accidentally spreading rumors that were originally just a joke.

I haven't seen anything about this rumor (and believe me, I've been recently checking around some sites that claimed they knew an inside source who announced season 5 back in April, months before it was announced officially, and I haven't seen or heard this rumor on those sites).

A majority of the anime segments are based on the webcomic/manga, so the "pairings" seen in the anime are the ones already established in the comics, and even then they're all very subtle or one-sided (Austria and Hungary's implied marriage during their Austria-Hungary years makes them somewhat canon, SuFin is somewhat one-sided, etc.). I don't think any mutual canon pairing has been shown yet in the webcomic (unless I'm wrong, and do correct me if I'm wrong). The same should go for Beautiful World, so if USUK (for example) isn't canon in the comics, it won't be canon in the anime if season 5 is handled to fit as close to the original comics as possible.

However, if this inside source is correct, this could be a hint towards a comic or two with extreme ship-teasing (the first one that comes to mind is "Buon San Valentino") being animated, and the blatant ship-teasing could be misinterpreted as a "pairing becoming canon", even if it truly isn't canon.

Well, if we stop to think, the only mutual canon pairing shown in the webcomic and animated as well was HRE x Chibitalia. And what makes the ship-tease magic to happen is that we still don't know if Hetalia's HRE = Germany (because ya know, actual history does not work like this), so the one of the GerIta ship tease happens because of this.

I don't think so. Hetalia is history-based, and history really can't have any stable pairings, even though Hetalia strays from real history a lot... I mean, if Hetalia actually does get canonical pairings, it would ruin one of its qualities, and some fans might even leave it. :p And yeah; I'm sure there are times when a nation 'marries' another, but is it really true? I highly doubt it. XD

Either way, that is probably just one of the many rumors flying around about Hetalia.

I think I know what you are referring to, but as it was already said here, if there isn't a definitive source, then it's just a rumour spread by overexcited fans :/.

Whatever the anime does, it is still based in Hima's web comic, so if he isn't do anything official about certain ships, then, it isn't canon, and as many have pointed before me, to this rate, no pairing will be made canon at this point, especially since it relies on historical events.

If we are talking about certain 'leaked' pics... (and possibly it is a joke) They are old as 2009-2010. The only one that 'leaked' was Italy from Gentosha and from the web page since it's the only one that has been released to the public.

If we are talking about the 'inside source' I will say that it is even new to me xD. The only inside info that I know and that it's possible true is about the anime staff, that's all.

I got this message on my formspring the other day, and yeah, same thing. If it's not canon in the comics, then it's not going to be in the anime.

I'm fairly certain that that's a load of BS. I've noticed that a lot of people on tumblr have a fairly loose idea of what "canon" even means and will go claiming things as canon even if they're, well, not.

I'd also have to agree with some of the other comments about how this would make Hetalia lose a lot of its appeal. It's a comedy, not a romance. And unless there's some sort of historical event that could be equated to two countries being paired together, it would seem really out of place.

I know that feel. I've seen people on Tumblr having raving arguments about how FrUK is canon and how America and Canada are their children.

And I'm just: did we watch/read the same series? Because nowhere in the series that I read did this happen

Or the cute little "what are the canon pairings?" questions, and everyone starts jumping down each others' throats about GerIta, Spamano, FrUK, USUK, SuFin, and Giripan when...no, just no. (I ship them all, but I also know they aren't canon. Giripan is probably the closest to 'canon' and even so...no.)

it's not even near to possible
I must say that..if they don't have any credible source such like a link to the main source/such, do not believe such thing
also try not to believe any news circulating in other sites(especially tumblr) until you found one with a main source by yourself
/and I can say, one of the best source to find official news about hetalia is from this comm, at least we'll provide a link to the original official source

I am a USUK-shipper myself, but I personally don't think it will ever be canon nor do I want Himaruya to make it, or any pairing, canon. Part of the fun in Hetalia is playing around with character interactions and your own interpretations of their relationship.
Himaruya certainly likes to ship-tease, though.

Completely agreed. Non-stablished canon ships makes the series having a little bit more of... magic? That makes the fans keep the fandom alive with shipping anyone they want.

A rumor is a rumor I'm afraid. In fact I'm sure I saw that thing start on YouTube, someone stated they liked FrUk and a USUK fangirl immediately responded with 'well that pairing won't be around much anymore as Himaruya stated USUK will be canon in season 5'. Which is a load of twaddle without evidence.

if that's...the source of this rumor, I guess it explains everything

People are just getting over-excited because the new anime staff has worked yaoi before, and the eventual possibility of getting an animated episode out of the Buon San Valentino strips in season 5. Someone jokingly said pairings will become canon in the new season, and then people took it for word of gospel and ran away with it. There is no truth in that rumor whatsoever

Ugh, I hate these kinds of rumors. I like shipping as much as the next shipper, but these rumors are usually used to bash against another's ship. I like freedom of shipping....

Aside from reasons people have stated here, how Himaruya or someone would canonize a pairing anyway? They gonna say 'I love you' to each other and kiss during the sunset? Declaring that both nations are 'married'? One does not simply marry a nation to other nations.

Well, Austria and Hungary were once married, and they're the only official couple (I think).

That's why I sincerely doubt UK/US would ever be made canon. Relationships between the nations are based on their real-life relationships. The United States and United Kingdom never were joined, nor do they have extremely close partnerships or ties (at least not that I know of). Thus, it would be very, very unlikely that the characters would move beyond their current relationship.

Remember that the anime is based on the manga (mainly)... and lately there isn't any kind of "canon pairings" in the mangas lately... So, I don't think it's true :P

Well the only thing I know is that Sweden is the only character with confirmed sexuality and that he only acts that way towards Finland..XD
I guess that if there were any canon pairings would probably be only Sweden x Finland and maybe Germany x Italy. But besides that, I don't really think it will.

Even that I wouldn't take too much stock in. It is a Finnish stereotype that all Swedish men are gay.

Doubt it much.

Tumblr people are crazy like that. And let me tell you, they rarely do much sources that would be probable. It's more annoying than when they see fancomics done in Himaruya's style that they didn't realize it was from Pixiv or DeviantART.

Would be nice for Buon San Valentino, but even as much as I love GerIta/HRExChibitalia, I doubt it would be close to have a canon pairing. Also, I love the comedy in this series, not just romance. Maybe it's because of the English Dubbing by Funimation for that, but I just like the series to make me laugh and smile.

The only reason I'm counting on GerIta/HRExChibitalia is because Himaruya promised they would have a happy ending somewhere (probably on Hetalia Wiki). But if even that doesn't turn out to be legit, then the canonizing probably won't happen...

I'd cry. This would butcher the whole series for me. It's about the minor implications. But you shouldn't trust rumors like that.

There are always fans like that, in all fandom when a new season is annonced.
I see already lot of rumors, Scotland, Mexico and Portugal will have their first appearance, officialisation of parings etc etc ....
Is not really hard to understand, season 5 will be adaptation of volume 4 and 5, and maybe some others no adapted strips.
So no pairings will become canon, but we can hoped for introduction of Romania, India etc etc all new characters introducted in the last two volumes.
