Discussion: HOW do you pronounce "FrUK"?

I don't know if this has been discussed on here before (or relatively recently), but I just need to figure this out. Considering how much time I spend on the internet, I've only ever actually heard someone say "FrUK" once (and it was at a con)--so I want to know how other people pronounce it. Hell, maybe we could even reach a general consensus on how it should be pronounced.





The one person I heard say it pronounced it "Frook." However, I know a lot of people pronounce it "Fruhk," which makes sense because of all the "FrUK you" jokes. But I suppose it would also make sense to call it "Froo-kay," since we pronounce the individual letters of U.K. when we say it... And really, I say it all of these ways.

So... how do you pronounce it?

I think I pronounce it as "Fruhk". I think. Not sure. But pronouncing it as "Froo-kay" makes probably more sense? But then you'd pronounce UsUk as "iusiukechei/Usookay" too?

(then again, since I pronounce them in Italian, we tend to read things exactly as they're written down, end. XD)

I pronounce it "frook" for reasons I don't even know. Everyone I've met pronounces it the same way.

I know it's more accurate to pronounce it "Fr-U-K," since UK is an acronym, but that just sounds odd since "Fr" isn't an acronym.

I pronounce it as "fruhk" but not because of the Fruk you jokes. Just because I read it as its written. I know frook of froo-kay would make more sense, but I've gotten used to fruhk so I cant stop xD

I say Frook though I "know" it's Fruhk. It just looks like Frook if that makes sense.

I pronounce it as "Frook" but I have heard others pronounce it as "eff-arr-yoo-kay" and "fruhk."

I always say eff-arr-yoo-kay. Same with yoo-ess-yoo-kay. If it has France in it, I always say eff-arr, because the "fr" sound doesn't work unless the next letter is a vowel, which it is with FrUK, but not with all of them, like FrSey, and I like to be consistent with my pronunciations. Same thing if it's using US or UK, because those are pronounced like that in daily conversation. But if the abbreviation is three or more letters, I say it like it looks. Like, SpaBel. (Prounounced in my head as spay-bell, which is kinda awkward, really. Sounds like I'm talking about a dog or something.)

Hm... It seems that "Frook" is winning so far. But I suppose the language/accent barriers would come into it... I didn't really think about that before. But it's like how "scone" is pronounced the way it's spelt in America, but it's pronounced "s'gon" in Britain. (Speaking of which, by the way, it's always annoyed me that England doesn't pronounce it that way. -_-)

Really? o.o Is that like pronouncing it "s-Go-nn"; (like to 'go' somewhere) or is 's'gon' more like "Gone" (like 'Gone with the Wind')?

The problem with pronunciations with the Funimation/English dub is that the VA are mainly from the US/Canada (I'm not really aware of others outside of those two countries, but there may be), so they only know so much from studying vocabulary, accents, etc. Without actually living in the specific country they are personifying for any length of time, things are going to slip through the cracks... The VA for England is American, so... yeah... 'Scone' fell through the cracks, I guess xD;

As in "gone." Otherwise it would sound prety much the same... I'm not really blaming Scott Freeman, but still. I would have loved to see a strip or an episode with England getting mad at America for pronouncing "scone" wrong...

I just go between "frook" and "fruck", depending on how people around me are pronouncing it. Since it's not a real word, I figure I can get away with being wishy-washy. xDD

I'm not a fan of FrUK pairings (Francey-pants scares me :3) so I don't really 'say' it out loud - but in my head, while reading the term, I say/think, "Frook" for FrUK...
however, I read "You-Ess; You-Kay" for USUK.
All other pairings, other than those two specific pairings, I just say the shipped countries full names x_x

I never really say any of these out loud, actually, but I use "F. R. U. K." and "U. S. U. K. " I find pronouncing the letters separately a lot easier. ^-^
