a question on one of norway and iceland's outfits

(if this isn't allowed, mods please delete)

I've seen a lot of fanart and even some cosplay of norway and iceland in scandinavian, viking-era tunics with similar, consistent color schemes and designs. but are these outfits actually based on ones in the canon or any of himaruya's sketches? I'm contemplating cosplaying one of the two for a con next year in an outfit like these, but I would like to know if they're purely fanon, or have fully shown up in the canon anywhere before I make my decision. thank you for your help!

I think they have been published in the special book of volume 3.

Here is Norway's. (http://pics.livejournal.com/melcratch/pic/00002z21)

And this is Iceland's. (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100527185323/hetalia/images/f/f2/Child_Iceland_02.png)

The particular images you have posted are fan made. But Hima-papa has drawn his own renditions.

As a fellow cosplayer, I will advise you not to let whether a piece of art is fanon or canon deter you from cosplying a particular outfit. Unless you plan on entering a craftsmanship contest, it is perfectly acceptable (at least to me) to cosplay fan art.

A clearer version of BOTH OF THEM (http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp326/Rubyconcream/Image13.jpg) if you need. I just made this cosplay pair myself recently.

I noticed that a lot of fans, in an attempt to interpret Norway's sketch, tend to mistake the trail of fairy dust bee-lining around his body as a ribbon accessory stuck to his garments or weapon.

Well actually, I make all my patterns from scratch (scratch is easier than buying store patterns- at least for me... I have trouble following instructions T__T and I like to control the appearance of my product). Although some research was required. I'm not really "renaissance fair" savvy so I didn't know that that specific style of sleeve was called a "paned cap sleeve". Unlike normal sleeves- for cap sleeves, the more vertically rounded and elongated the cap pattern is, the poofier the sleeve comes out (I drew you an example)... as for the "panes" on the sleeves themselves. I've seen on some Renfair forums that you pretty much make them by taking the preexisting cap sleeve pattern and slice it up into strips.

Unfortunately the cosplay I made was for my ball jointed dolls, but for human patterns your over all pattern scheme may look something like this. Sorry if it's too scribbly to understand.

FAST SCRIBBLY PATTERN DRAFT (http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp326/Rubyconcream/halfassed.jpg)

When I did Norway's yoke, I cut two sizes- the natural size that fit exactly around the neck, and a elongated version I bunched up and attached to the "exact" neck pattern to create that gathered look of his collar. Iceland's collar is hard to see in the picture, and it's even harder to tell if the flower on his chest is actually part of his outfit, or a flower in the puffin's mouth... I kind of doubt that the puffin is holding the flower... Because I'm finicky, when I made their hats, I enforced their plump shape with a hard as rock papermache interior to avoid sagging. I dunno- I hate seeing wilted berets...

If you would like to chase for store bought patterns THIS ONE (http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6141-products-11155.php?page_id=494) is available currently. The neck shape is right for Norway, but IMO it looks a little too wide for Iceland, although you're going to need to steal a collar from another pattern or improvise your own.

@__@ Sorry if that didn't really help. Feel free to ask more questions.

Oh god... I can't remember the name of the fabric I used... but it's basically like a decently thin fuzzy stuff.... it attracted a generous amount of lint... I asked my sister and she said "Medieval" .... so I guess... it's a fabric commonly used for renfair costumes?

Here's one of the photos of the cosplay- maybe you can tell by looking the kind it is? I shot this with my old camera before it died a merciless and pathedic death.

BJD COSPLAY (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3198/5734241493_faa3fb1f60_z.jpg)

The larger of the two dolls it roughly two feet tall. I'm pretty sure this kind of frabic would fall on a human a little differently. Giving Norway's neck gold trimming seems to be a common fan embellishment for sewn versions of this outfit, but it does give it some depth.

I think one of the cosplay best versions I've seen of this costume set, the color scheme was black. I know very few artists have drawn Norway in red- I kind of want to browse around and see if anybody's cosplayed it in that color yet- that would be interesting!
