I know this is not a popular opinion but I wish he would concentrate more on the already existing characters like Cameroon or hell,Tibet or Mongolia for that matter who have zero character developement than just keep making new ones.

And it comes down to my usual question...why doesn't Hima make every country/nation?
I mean I know it's hard to come up with designs, info and whatnot, but I don't really think it's fair if certain characters get squat and the others stealing the spotlight everytime.

Aw, don't be like that.
Character design is hard, doubly so if you've got a heck of a lot of backstory (in this case, history) to go through. And considering how many nations there are in relality, we can't expect poor Hima-san to churn out all of them quickly.

He probably has to do some research before he een begins to imagine them, and thinks alot about them to begin with - He's been thinking about (and designing) Portugal for a long, long time.

If anything, I'd rather wait than expect him to just roll out new characters in a hurry, because then he might ignore he ones he's already created in the meantime.

Sure, OZ and NZ didn get alot of spotlight, but I suppose in terms of history, we don't have as much as the other nations. It would be nice to see them in a strip sometime, but I'm happy to wait it out.

-shrugs- I feel like this fandom has been so spoiled to the point that... we're never happy with what we get anymore?

i mean sure, okay, complaints and wishes have always been a part of this fandom when it comes to himaruya, but it used be more of actual wishful thoughts instead... of well... almost demand like comments...

people used to be so surprised when himaruya answered them... now it's like... "why doesnt he answer mine?!"

he's just one guy, you guys. he's doing his best.

i think we've all seen what himaruya is capable of at this point... but sometimes i feel like the fans are asking of himaruya something that doesnt necessarily fit in with his style.

now for the really unpopular opinion

going off that same vein... im actually a little happy with giving faces without character backing... i like the freedom himaruya allows me to interpret the character however i so please. it gives the character a more 3D look if i see what this fan is doing and then see another fan doing the exact same opposite but somehow they're still the same character and you think about the hows and the whys so and so can be the same or not at all.

basically the absence of canon let's our imagination run wild and we think and -shrug- i like it that way

i mean i would welcome any character info himaruya shares with us, but i feel like 'word of god' is always just one element in fandom? and especially with this fandom, we blow up the 'word of god' and expand it to greater proportions till it becomes so OOC it's actually IC.

no, it's not too long in my opinion. It's a very good assessment of what has developed in both the positive and negative sense. I'm just really glad that I'm not the only one with this opinion =)

Also, considering the fact that these are all countries and history is involved there essentially is no such thing a "canon" in the original anime sense of the word. History and countries can be and are interpreted differently for everyone and it also comprises of who you are, where you come from, and what you're like

Just to add my two bits, I used to think that the fanbase was actually an intelligent, especially when they talk about the historical events portrayed in hetalia and the relations ( actual relations, not fan pairings) the countries have with other nations as a whole during whichever wars... But lately, the fanbase has been turning into, like many other fanbases, purely based on fangirl wants (not needs)

What I mean by that is that you guys always ask for new countries here and new countries there... Yet barely a few of you actually stopped and read the opposing comments above? Why is that? Be sensible, there are still a nice list of countries created yet have had barely any screentime, no voices for some, not even an appearance in an official comic? (list: Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Cameroon, Romania, Mongolia, Cuba, Egypt... Etc.)

You do realize that once this new country comes out, you'll all be whining about how the character is underdeveloped; how he hasn't appeared in a comic, etc. And it's really like history and actions are repeating themselves =_= so yeah... My two bits. Peace!

I do agree that a lot characters need fleshing out, but in defence of the fangirls/boys, it's not unlike Hima-sensei to suddenly come out with a new but incomplete character design with just a few quick notes on their personality and history every now and again, since he's still working on them. That, coupled with national pride, will of course result in a desire to catch even a glimpse of their- or our, seeing as my country isn't canon either- home in a comic we love so much. Admittedly, some are calmer and more sensible about it than others.

We don't know how Hima-sensei works, exactly, either. Does he wait until an idea is fully formed, make rough sketches, do a bit more research, decide on a final design, add a couple of finishing touches and then work on a new country? Evidence suggests that, while he does most of the research before forming the character, he often has multiple designs on his mind at the same time and works on them alternately until he's happy with them; it took absolute ages for the East Asians to finally make a canon appearance. He kept playing around with hair styles and possible personalities. Not to mention, he has been working on India, Scotland and Portugal for a while now. Asking him to do the same for our own respective countries doesn't really seem unreasonable to me, though of course it will take a long time and we'll have to be patient.

And that's my opinion.

If Himaruya tries to make a strip about the European empire and their trade/exploits in Asia, I have the gut feeling the three ASEAN Nations mentioned above, will be introduced... They will finally connect the dots in terms of trade during the 1500-1800s...

Which means

Philippines>Mexico>Spain
Malaysia>Macau>India>Portugal
Indonesia>Taiwan>India>Netherlands(Sorry dont know much about the Dutch route)

at least Seven countries are still needed to be mentioned or introduce if Himaruya will explain the trades

I'm going to have to agree that 1. the fandom is spoiled and it's ridiculous how angry the fans get any time Himaruya does something new but it's not exactly what they want. A new character is designed? "Bawwww, I wanted this other country instead!" or "Bawwwww, my OC for this country is better!" He draws something and posts it on his blog? "Bawwww why didn't he draw my favorite character?" He spends time drawing mochis, Nyotalia, silly strips, etc? "bawwwwwwww I want historical strips!" He draws historical strips? "Bawwww this is historically inaccurate!!!1" He designs new characters? "Bawww why doesn't he draw strips for them right now?!" He draws strips? "Bawwwwww I want Scotland/Portugal/Philippines/Ireland/Mexico/insert commonly requested character here". It's really kind of pathetic.

I also agree that I'd kind of prefer new strips to new characters, since we have so many who got designed but are sitting there doing nothing, and even some characters that we've had for a while that do have canon seriously need some more. I'm going to have to agree that 1. the fandom is spoiled and it's ridiculous how angry the fans get any time Himaruya does something new but it's not exactly what they want. A new character is designed? "Bawwww, I wanted this other country instead!" or "Bawwwww, my OC for this country is better!" He draws something and posts it on his blog? "Bawwww why didn't he draw my favorite character?" He spends time drawing mochis, Nyotalia, silly strips, etc? "bawwwwwwww I want historical strips!" He draws historical strips? "Bawwww this is historically inaccurate!!!1" He designs new characters? "Bawww why doesn't he draw strips for them right now?!" He draws strips? "Bawwwwww I want Scotland/Portugal/Philippines/Ireland/Mexico/insert commonly requested character here". It's really kind of pathetic.

Sad reality, indeed.

About Portugal, guys...
Those are only predesigns. Predesigns who are starting to get old, moreover. In other words, I doubt he will ever pick one of the four. Remeber Taiwan ? That's the same story. However, some things will definitively remain in future Porty, like the scars or the jewels.

I always feel apprehensive whenever it comes to new characters, not because of what Himaruya would pull off, but because of the reaction. He's damned if he does, he damned if he doesn't. I wish he were a little bit meaner, choosing whatever artistic direction he wants and whatever negative response comes his way, I hope his immediate reaction is 'too bad, son, you'll be seeing more of it'.
