Careers for the nations?

I'm not sure if this has already been asked before (by all means, it may have) but during a particularly numbing class lecture, I started thinking about the professions each nations would have, and why they would be well-suited to the job. So, I'm asking you for your headcanon: what kind of career do you think a certain character would be good for, and why?

Alfred: Kindergarten teacher - This is my headcanon, but I think Alfred would be a hit with kids - partly because he is a manchild himself |D He wants to be a 'hero', and I think little kids would look up to him as if he were.
Francis: Marriage counselor - It was a toss-up between marriage counselor and radio host for a love/romance station, but Francis might be too scandalous for air, so I chose another career where he'd offer advice to the poor unfortunate souls that suffer from problems of l'amour~
Arthur: Children's storybook publisher - Because he loves magical creatures, and has a lot of experience with telling stories to his former colonies~
Ludwig: Stock broker - Oh great, another cause of stress for Ludwig |D He'd make a great stock broker/insurance manager/tax accountant, anything along those lines.
Romano: Race car driver - More headcanon, but I think Romano has a love for sports cars and fast driving, and it's a dangerous/exciting/competitive lifestyle for him.
Feliciano: Italian chef - Because face it, what can he do other than make good pasta |D /shot
Gilbert: Journalist/private investigator - He's a prolific writer (at least, based on all those journals he keeps) and a snoop! Perfect~
Antonio: Veterinarian/Doctor - The more I think about this, the more I like it. Antonio is so caring, warm, and easy-going, I think he'd make a wonderful doctor or veterinarian.
Feliks: Haute couture designer - Do I even need to explain this one? P:
Toris: Guidance counselor - He's dealt with a lot of issues in the past, and I feel like he's the type to want to make sure no one else has to deal with them - or at least be able to help. He's a really helpful guy, anyways.

As much as I tried, I could not think of a career for Ivan.

Well, that was quite a long list! (Like I said, it was a particularly mind numbing lecture |D) Feel free to share, agree, or disagree, as long as you do so in a respectful manner (but I trust you knew that already!~) Mods, please delete this if it is not allowed!

I just gotta say I love the idea of America watching the kiddies, and England publishing kiddy books! I bet they're sometimes too scary for them though...

I can;t see Romano racing cars, but its likely more my thought that he'd be stuck in some boring, frustrating job just seething because his brother has a better and cooler one than himself. I think Romano washes the dishes in the restaurant Italy works in. The idea of Romano racing cars is cute though, he'd have serious road rage!

What do you suppose Canada might do? I could see him working in the zoo taking care of the Polar Bears and Penguins and never standing out. Or maybe he works as a gardener or makes custom teddy bears or something. oOo

I think Russia is in plumbing or is a door to door salesman, (A very successful one, because he scares all his customers...)

Interesting thought on the whole, I'm interested in hearing moar!

That would explain why Russia carries a pipe around all the time. Free advertising! XD

Easy, Ivan is an assassin. Or at least some kind of spy.

I tend to imagine Feliciano as working more in the art field, like being a guide in an art gallery or a co-ordinator of art shows or something. Cooking pasta is just his favourite hobby.

The one I can never think of a career for is Elizabeta. I have her as a character in an alternate reality 'fic of mine, but I could never think of a job for her so I've just . . . avoided the topic so far.

On that note, I have Gilbert as a history teacher - he became one for the sole purpose of teaching the youth of today about Frederick the Great, and he ignores all other aspects of the curriculum because he thinks they're insignificant in comparison.

[identity profile] idraax.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That bit about Gilbert just became part of my headcannon. XD I think Elizabeta would work for a tabloid. I mean you see her in fanart with a camera, so...

I think Alfred and Antonio's jobs shoud be switched. I explain.
Antonio has much more experience with children (you know, colonies) than Alfred. Alfred has a similar attitude so he would be perfect ad a vet as well! Or maybe a police officer (you know, the hero thing...) However I like your choice too!
I love Arthur as a publisher <3
But I think Feliciano would be better as a painter on an artist, and Romano as a chef. I am an Italian, and I live in south Italy. I assure you that the best food is in the South. We have traditional food for every little town. And it's good *ç*
Maybe Ivan could be a jailer!
And Gilbert, I see him also selling original German beer XD

[identity profile] chi-hong.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
I would visit that restaurant as much as possible if Romano was working there eue *Crush? Me? Nooooooooooo.....*

I can see Antonio working with children too, he loves kids and I think it'd be adorable. I'd want him to work in the kindergarten I went to as a kid.

For China, he'd probably be a historian or own a chain of Chinese restaurants or something. Or a kung fu coach... xD Or he could be a teacher or something, in an elementary school. He loves kids too. (Headcanon)

Mongolia... Maybe firefighter or something badass. Own a ranch or something xD Or train kids how to ride horses. (The firefighter thing is just because I've played him as one. It was a pretty random choice, but it became normal to me after a while xD) I just have this idea of him also wanting to help people somehow. And what better way to do that than to save people from accidents and fires? eue

France.... I can't shake the image of him being the school nurse or something xDDD The marriage counselor sounds fun too, I can see him wanting to help everybody with love issues.

Sweden.... carpenter ~eue~ Or something with computers.

Korea would be an actor. Just cause. (Korean dramas anyone?)

My headcannon is weird.

I always saw Ludwig as a baker or a jewelery maker. I'm not sure why.

I see Alfred as being a freelance, "jack of all trades" kind of person and Aurthur would be teaching classes on either English literature or on how to properly make tea.

I see Turkey as a poet and teaching classes on Poetry.

Norway would make instruments or do something with electronic music.

Austria would be a music producer or a conductor.

[identity profile] charlzway.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
^ I agree with Korea being an actor and Sweden being a carpenter!

I actually think America would do well in the media/mass communications industry i.e. newscaster, weatherman, talk show-host, journalist, advertising.... He has the energy for it, that's for sure, and he's very outspoken, loud and flashy; all of which would help a lot in media.

I want to say Japan would be a mangaka but that's pretty cliché (maybe as a side job? lol). I actually think he would work in a computer/robotics company as the software developer/programmer/engineer because seriously, the Japanese excel in that industry.

England could possibly be a teacher/lecturer of sorts too (who writes romance novels in his free time xD). But you know what his dream job is? To work with Gordon Ramsay. So he will participate in Hell's Kitchen. Every single year. B|

Italy would be a chef/painter/sculpture/art curator? Possibly a fashion designer too. And Romano will work as Spain's angry gardener, while Spain just owns a big mansion and lazes about LIKE A BOSS.

Greece would be a well... I dunno, a writer? Maybe a philosophy teacher that is, if he doesn't fall asleep on the job all the time. If all that fails, he definitely wouldn't mind being a caretaker for stray cats or a vet of sorts.

I actually wrote a short character-study fic as my headcanon for Switzerland's profession (futures broker and stock market analyst), though I've never actually posted it to the main community. Perhaps I'll do that shortly. ^_^

EDIT: And here it is.

Yao is totally a virtuoso at playing various traditonal Chinese instruments(guzheng, erhu, etc). Puts out CD's of traditional Chinese music all the time. Of course that can't pay all the bills, so he teaches others how to play said instruments as well.

France: fashion designer. I mean Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world!
Switzerland: watchmaker/ watch repair. the Swiss are known for their watches and I could see him running a small watchmaking shop and complaining how no one ever wants handmade watches anymore.
America: firefighter 'cause he's the hero
N. Italy: painter or priest.
S. Italy: farmer. he IS well known for his agriculture

[identity profile] broken-flower58.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)

I think Kiku would make for a good engineer. He's very fond of technology, nanobytes & stuff.

Alfred...an astronaut, perhaps? He's fascinated with rockets or any machine able to fly xD

I'm also thinking of Austria as a well-known piano player, librarian or jewelery maker (you know,Swarosky).

It would be interesting to ask Himaruya what he thinks! I'm sure he'd surprise us all.

The idea of Romano as a helpdesk worker is amusing. I imagine him like the guys in IT Crowd "Have you tried switching it off and on again? No?? Do it, dammit!" *hangs phone*.

Antonio being a free spirit could be something artistic with practical applications, such as a graphic designer or someone in an advertising agency.

North Italy as a host (japanese style) or as the owner of a nice small cafe is fitting.

Hungary as a paparazzi works great. And maybe as a bodyguard too :D

Russia had to be a KGB spy in his Soviet years. It just seems so likely.

Britain seems like he could be a writer or something.

In my headcanon China's actually a member of the CCP, and an amateur musician.

Now that I've read the comments above, these are my ideas:
America would be a TV Salesman (like the shamwow guy). I even remember a strip where he was selling a hair-straightener on the TV.
England would be an English Literacy teacher, and a part-time novelist.
France would be a journalist. He's good at gathering information, as well as spreading it. ;)
Canada would be, according to my headcanon, working at a flower shop or garden care store. I'm not sure why.
I imagine Sweden as a Kindergarden teacher. I would be adorable! I only wonder if the parents would actually leave their kids there...
Austria would be a music composer and/or a piano teacher. Perhaps even an Orchestra conductor.
Prussia would be a bartender. He has a good personality for it (and it has beer)
Japan would be an agent, or a video game designer (Otome games!)
N. Italy would be a tourguide.
Spain would be a (tomato) Farmer.
If I remember, Romano was selling vegetable produce (when Germany came along)
I do like the idea of Switzerland making hand-made watches ^^
Germany would be a baker. (Kitchen fairy!)
Hungary would be a great paparazzi.
China as a historian, since he's so old.
And lastly, Korea as an actor would be perfect!

You guys are making me want to write a fanfic. So. Badly.

I've always seen Sweden working in some kind of workshop building anything from toys to furniture (he might also want a coffee shop, but it's hard for him to actually get costumers).

Denmark seems to be someone who would run a day care. I see him loving to work with kids but not really teaching like a kindergarden teacher would.

Finland would own some sort of cute small shop on the corner. Maybe a coffee/book/music shop, perhaps? (Where he sells both death metal CDs and Moomin comics~) Hana would be the store pet who likes sleeping at the window when she's not greeting customers.

Norway would be doing something with music. I'm not entirely sure what though.

Iceland... will... Probably be helping Norway or work at a museum perhaps? (Or maybe just freeloading until he can get a job suitable for him.)

Despite what I've seen in several fanfics of him being a programmer, I rather like the idea of Estonia being some sort of historian -maybe dealing with Northern European architecture. However, he might also be a freelance game designer when he can.

Latvia would have some sort of temporary, office job but really wants to own a flower shop. It may not seem possible for him at times, but he tries his best.

Going to have to agree with the OP on what Poland and Lithuania would be. And... I really don't know what job would suit Belarus.

Ukraine would work a few odd jobs but actually has an interest of being a nurse (which she likely will become).

Netherlands would either work as a gardener or own a pet shop. Both would suit him rather well.

Belgium would work at or own a Chocolate shop though she probably worked as a house maid for a little while.

let's see...

Norway: I think he'd work in the oil-buisness (as it's essentially his country's main source of income.) He'd either be an engineer or someone who deals with the more business side of oil-work (marketing or stock broker perhaps?) personally I think he plays the fiddle in his spare time to relive stress (in the winter he goes on long skii trips for days on end)

Iceland: part time job at museums and a part time job on a fishing boat (he complains about both jobs all the time. but still gets up early every day - and on time)

Sweden: Antique furniture store with a small café at the front (because the man is obsessed with houses looking nice)

Denmark: two possible jobs: either a great promoter of wind energy (you know he'll phone up Norway every week to tell him wind is the future: not oil) or he'd be a bakery owner (I love the idea of him being an excellent chef/cook/baker)

Tino: Professional world champion in marksmanship! J/K He'd probably work in customer service somewhere. brightening everyone's day no matter what

I never really thought of this besides for two characters, Poland and Russia. And, I already agree with your Poland choice, I personally see him in some sort of design career.
But, I do have a friend who said she likes to view Russia as a history professor in a university. I remember her reasoning being something along the lines of "he'd dislike to hear all the incorrect information, so he'd become a history teacher to teach students history accurately."

And well, personally, I love the idea. So, that's my thoughts!
