Oh, oh - out of curiosity, how do Vietnamese generally feel about the French and the Russians (seeing as how the latter also has Communism and the former invaded Vietnam until the 1970's(?)

Ummm... I haven't lived in Vietnam, so I donno exactly. But as for the older folk in my family, hard to say, since no one particularly has any overwhelming hatred for China, Russia, or France. But, I'm pretty sure that there is tension between the Vietnamese and the Communists. Wasn't too long ago that we had the war.
It's just like... "Oh, if it wasn't for them, our country would have been a republic and we might not've been so poor, and the war would have never happened, and we wouldn't have had to flee our home and blah blah blah." Though, I don't hear my relatives complaining about being there now.

But, there aren't a lot of living revolutionaries anymore, so no one feels the need to harbor any resentment against the French.

I think a similar attitude exists in India and Pakistan about the British..."if it weren't for them, we wouldn't be divided", though not everyone sees it as having been a completely bad thing.
