I've never been called "Ma'am" and would be very confused if someone did call me that. I don't really know how often "Sir" or "Ma'am" is used in Canada, if at all, but I know that I rarely have ever heard it being used to address people (though I can't say for the whole country).

I'm not sure how much it applies to the rest of the country, but I can speak for the prairies of Canada! I've worked in retail for a few years and it's fairly common to call someone "Sir" or "Ma'am". "Miss" is usually for younger women.

That's interesting, since I grew up in one of the prairie provinces. I'm sure people in Canada do use it, but I'm never in the right situation to hear it. I guess its depends on what a person is taught and I have never be told to use it.
