Clarafication on what might involve Hetalia manga in the U.S.

a quote of the Tokyopop's statement on unfinished titles.

"It's been a while since we've commented on the status of all the titles that are left unfinished or unpublished. Just so you know, we're still reading all of your comments and want to explain a few things".

Let's Break This Down...

I don't understand what all the upset comments are about. This is a good thing. A VERY good thing. Rumors were circulating that Tokyopop might be exercising a Vulcan death grip on its licenses to keep other companies from getting them. Reverting back to the original owners means that they have ample chance to relicense them with another company. And Hetalia sold VERY well for Tokyopop and likely made Gentosha lots of money with that licensing deal so they'd be insane not to try and sell Hetalia's licensing overseas again. Worst case scenario they know how popular it is and decide to raise the licensing cost and the process is slowed down, but rest assured it WILL happen.

That being said, if you are a fan of a title not named "Hetalia", "Fruits Basket", or "Alice in the Country of Hearts", feel free to worry. The rant above was just saying that Hetalia's future in America is pretty safe.

"Thirdly, the unfinished/unpublished titles. What is going to happen to them? To be honest: it's out of our hands now. The licenses belong to the original Japanese creators, so it's up to them what to do with the series. They might pull the plug on some series, or find another publishing company to complete their series. The best thing that you can do is keep supporting the original creators, hoping that they'll here your cries like we did so many years ago."

Ah I hope someone gets the chance to pick it up again. I've already bought volume 1 & 2, but if it gets a rehaul I'll probably end up buying them again tbh.

A smart publisher would do at least a little tweaking and add in a couple of extras to ensure that most fans who bought the first two volumes will snap up their re-issues. I'm looking forward to finding out who picks it up and what their plans are to adjust it and make print Hetalia stand out as theirs.

Hetalia is very popular in America, so I have no doubt that another company will want to snatch it right up.

What I'm worrying most about is who will be picking up the Blu titles. I'm going to be so mad if I can't complete Junjo Romantica.

Ditto on anything by Blu Manga. It was a very good company and it makes me sad that it's gone. ;____;

I just hope that whoever re-licenses Hetalia releases the volumes in quick succession, otherwise we will have to wait up to two years to get vol 3, and for god knows how long to get vol 4. I hope the just keep the original translations and don't go through the palava or retranslating it all again, but somehow I doubt that T_T.

...Well if you guys don't mind me suggestion a company I think Yen Press did a very good job on several of their mangas and I think they would do a good job for Hetalia. Though you can correct me if you think I'm wrong.

Yen press are pretty good and regular with updates.

Plus they often do coloured art, which makes it so much better :3

I'm going to agree with what runciblespork said about extras. The first two volumes have to be rereleased because the new company will not have any rights to the translations, they'll have to redo them themselves. And to get people to buy the second versions, they'll really need to do something special with the format or extras.

What I'm really hoping for is to get rid of all the honourifics if it's not Japan speaking, and to add in way more "other languages". I'm also hoping for some colours and the extra sketches that came with the special editions in Japan~ Because really, the only thing iI didn't like about the TP version was the honourifics. That and the contest being only for Americans and only through Facebook (not everyone has Facebook *grumble*), when they infact had it open to Canadians and others...

I have no idea how this would work, switching companies, but is it possible the new company will release Vol3 before going back and rereleasing Vols 1 and 2?

Stupid Tokyopop going bankrupt... I know at least that the England branch died a long time ago. So Im guessing its only the foreign language branches that are still running.

HOWEVER! Lets be honest, appart from a few amazing series like (duh)Hetalia, Fruits Basket etc, most of their series were a bit shit.

A series like Hetalia won't take too long to be bought up by someone, the fans are reaally big in numbers and it won all sorts of books of the week I think. Still sucks. Soooo close to be getting vol. 3.

[identity profile] loremaula.livejournal.com 2011-05-25 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope another better publisher will take Hetalia and Petshop of Horrors. Tokyopop editions are awful, really bad quality.

YEN PRESS PLZ.

Forever crying since most of my favorite series are from them.
Also happily crying for the reason behind it.
