[Question] RevolutionaryWar!England Cosplay

Hello, I'm quite new to LJ and I hope, I'm doing this right. ^^;

I am planning on doing RevolutionaryWar!England for a con. I was wondering what kind of materials for the fabric can be used? How about those lines thingy [I don't know what they're called .. ] on the sleeves and linings? Also, I saw that they were white, but I also saw a costume with gold lines.  I'm also want to hear some details [i.e. buttons, etc, etc. ] on the costume since I want the costume to be really nice. To those who have cosplayed RevolutionaryWar!England, how did you make your costumes?

Also, I have finished my England cosplay , yet the only thing that is inaccurate is his chest-belt thingy. Where can I find those?

 

Help me, I'm kinda confused. X_X And pardon my English. *is not from the US*

The coat would be wool -- Melton wool if you can get it, for period accuracy, though it's often expensive to find in the lengths you'd need. If wool is too pricey or hard to find in the colour you want, gabardine plus some kind of lining can be a decent substitute. (I've heard of people using fleece to replicate the wool look, but that would seem to be a recipe for death by heat stroke depending on where you wear it.)

For other period details, I'd suggest looking at websites for American Revolution re-enactments. They often have links to sites where you can purchase equipment or see detailed pictures for crafting your own.

I haven't roleplayed, but...for the "chest belt thingy" - I'm working on making one for myself for everyday type wear. (I wear a lot of...strange, sometimes steampunk outfits, so...yeah.) It's called a Sam Browne belt, and if you look online you can find sometimes find patterns (I found one on Instructables.com.)

I agree with the above poster for using gabardine for substitute for the wool. It also prevents you from dying from the heat and looks very nice.

The belt was used to hold cartridges and your bayonet; in fact, two were worn across the chest (like in America's uniform).

You can make one yourself fairly easily. I didn't do Revolutionary War England but I made Austrian Succession England and he wears a cartridge belt with his uniform. Mine was made from white vinyl, just two long strips sewn together at the shoulder and at the hip (like a beauty queen sash).

For the same cosplay, I used bias tape for the details. Just fold, press and sew. I suppose you can use ribbon too, but bias tape is already folded, which makes things easier.

If you can go to a fashion/garment district, you will be able to find much better buttons than a craft store. I was able to find pewter-silver dome buttons, though I suppose flat round gold or brass buttons would look just fine as well.

I tried making it from two belts but the results wasn't that good, so thanks for the tip. ^^;

The trick is to first fit it to yourself by pinning. At least one of the seams will have to slant, in order for it to rest flat across your body.
