It looks like these "new" prefecture designs might actually be his really old obscure ones (only a few of them still exist as files). Look at the black and white sketch on the right, that's Akita! There's one that looks like a prototype of Kalom (of Barjona), he must be Shiga.

He's kept Nagasaki as a twin-tailed girl, but removed her ribbons to lessen her resemblance to Seychelles (who was recycled from her design). Oita is Nomaru from Barjona. It looks like Himaruya's reused a few of his other characters for the prefectures, but the other ones are new-old looks for them. I wonder how the prefecture characters relate to the old -hans he drew?

haha that's actually my headcanon, that Germany has a huge yard so he can take in all the homeless puppies, so he has at least a dozen at any given time. Poor guy's house is like a zoo, with all the dogs, + 2 cats + 1 Gilbird + Prussia himself, and then Italy pops in an just adds more chaos!

No wonder he never smiles...

soo I'll admit to my confusion here. Can someone please explain just what a prefecture is? I don't think I understand. How/why would they have personifications? Are these guys even hetalia characters or is this a separate project?

And anyone who knows more about them, what is the significance of the animals or objects they might have?

Japan is divided up into 47 prefectures, each covering an area of the country. Each prefecture has administrative authority within their boundaries.

How and why prefecture-tans would exist, we don't know; Himaruya's not gone that deep.

A previous prefecture pic has 'Hetalia' beneath it, so as far as we know they're Hetalia characters.
