Himaruya's updated his blog with some information on the artbook, and a picture of Italy! Kitty is there, too! And some chibis of what appear to be Japan's prefectures? They may not be for Hetalia, however, although I see "Hetalia" written in the text beneath them.

He knows a lot more about his own culture and homeland and it's easier to do research on things and draw about things he knows about. When it comes to making characters of other countries, he actually has to research, and some things are not as easily found in Japanese, if findable at all, as they are in English.
