[Discussion] Muscularity of Characters

Don't know if this is allowed, Mod-sama-kun-senpai-san-dono-tachi, but how muscular does everyone see the characters?

For me, Germany is the most muscular in the weight lifting category, Sweden is the most muscular in the ropey muscles/swimming/wife carrying practice category, Latvia is probably the most slender, and Russia is the bulkiest (by his own admission, no less!)

If you had to put them in order from muscular to slender to bulky, how would you put them?

And for the girls as well. Who's all curves and who's nothing but muscle?

[identity profile] cattiechaos.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
This is such an interesting topic to ponder! (But shouldn't it be under 'discussion' instead of 'fan-art'? Maybe my computer's glitching, but I actually don't see any fan-art...

Anyways, I do think Germany is the most muscular, seeing as he values physical and mental strength so much. I think Sweden, Denmark, and Netherlands would be really fit also, while America, England, and France are more toned. And Spain and the Italies are slender :3 (I rambled a lot.)

I've always pictured Belgium to be really curvy and lovely, Liechtenstein as really slight, and Belarus as more fit/toned. I think we all know about Ukraine already xD

So much ramble.

-HUEG manry muscules: ROME of course, Germany, Turkey, Germania, Sweden
-Muscular-fat: Russia, Cuba, Finland (though not the same way as Russia, hard to explain my mental image I guess but he's not all pudge and no muscle lemme tell you)
-Muscular but not huge or fat: Netherlands, America, Canada, Greece, Denmark
-Toned/in-between: Spain, Prussia, France, China, Korea, Switzerland
-Skinny-fit/wiry: Egypt, England, Norway, Austria, Japan, Lithuania
-Slender: Italy, Poland, Hong Kong, Iceland, Latvia
-...can you call a guy curvy?/not in the above categories: Romano (I CAN'T HELP IT damn you chubbymano fics), Estonia

And the girls-
-Muscular: Hungary, Vietnam
-Toned: Belgium, Belarus, Liechtenstein (she works out with her bro, okay?)
-Slender: Taiwan, Seychelles
-Curvy: Ukraine, Monaco

I... think that's everyone... in order in each category from biggest to smallest. xD

[identity profile] gloomykuma.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
IT'S PARFEKTO PERFECT

Hellz yeah Vietnam is muscular.

[identity profile] darth.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
I just can't imagine her kicking so much military ass and not being muscular, you know? XD

[identity profile] fablespinner.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
This... YES! (With the exception of Finland. I stick him in the Slender Category with Italy. Just my Kink. Cause I like pairing him with oh so MANRY Su-san.) The Dolph Lungren FIT body of the 1980's oh yeah... I'm drooling now. Damn it.

I want to see the MANRY muscle category in an oil slicked body wrestling match now. Greco Roman Style... (Uh oh Grandpa Rome has "we invented it" advantage. Perhaps he should referee.)

[identity profile] darth.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
(Haha, I have head-canon of Finland having a sort of SURPRISE manry physique under those sweater vests. ;D)

Yeeeees.
Hungary can't participate either she'd win 8|

[identity profile] fablespinner.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hungary kicks EVERYONE'S Butts.

She can keep score (Since we all know she is also a NOT SO CLOSET Yaoi fangirl.) If she can put the camera down log enough TO keep score.

;)

(Oh and Yeah Tino is firm in my world. I like my boys... BOYS.) He just didn't get blessed by the height and weight fairy. LOL.

[identity profile] fablespinner.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I know. Poor Tino in Doujinshi is so girly I want to cry. I mean I like TWINK guys, but not girls with penises (And even then it's just glowing cones of light might as well BE a girl at that point.)

I promise never to draw girly Tino, I do solemnly swear on gilbird.

:)

[identity profile] derjmeister.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I free air arm-wrestled a Hungary while cosplaying Sweden at AWA and legitimately lost because I had a bad grip and could feel my arm starting to tear. It was at the "history behind hetalia" panel, because the guy running the panel said that Hungary was the most manly character, so I did my civic duty to prove this wrong. And failed. But I think it made some people laugh, so it's okay.

[identity profile] darth.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I want someone to draw Sweden arm-wrestling Hungary and losing... XD

[identity profile] arctoslupus.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Holy crap, I just looked at your profile and that picture of your ripped arms, just how strong was that Hungary?

[identity profile] derjmeister.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually got slightly more arm mass than that now since that's an old pic. It was more because I had a bad grip and didn't want to tear up my arm (or tear up her arm). Kind of like tapping out... It's more about leverage.

I kind of just came crashing down to my knees and then side in epic defeat. Apparently if I'd stayed down like two seconds longer, my friend who was cosplaying Denmark would have come over and kicked me a few times, which would have been pretty funny, and I'm sad that didn't happen.

[identity profile] arctoslupus.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well at least the Hungary fans out there got something out of it ^.^;

Lol, that would have been pretty amusing.

[identity profile] darth.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
I FORGOT THAILAND AND AUSTRALIA

Australia would go in the regularly-muscular category, and Thailand in the skinny/wiry category for me.

And Cameroon. Brain farts today I guess. He'd go in the regularly-muscular category too. >>

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I agree with all this more or less xD I like the category you put Fin in too-- it kinda bothers me when people think of him as being super slender, when we've seen that he's got a little meat on him, but he's not as delicate as all that either so... yes. I agree xD

manry muscles :Q__

[identity profile] morwen2.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree 100% with you...except maybe for Sweden (I'd put him in the same group as Denmark & Co.) and Finland (with Veneziano & Co.)

btw, epic icon XD

[identity profile] vysnia-cerasus.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Great list!

The Italies might look similar in the comic but I can't help but grow on the idea of Romano not being AS skinny as Veneziano, heh. Which fics?

I think Lithuania would be toned a little indeed, didn't one early profile say he liked martial arts? So hard to remember. But Australia looks like he'd be pretty buff.

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so hard with Finland being there! :)

HUEG manry muscules: ROME of course

I agree that Hima-sensei draws him like that, but it amuses me because it makes no sense. Romans were Latins, they were slender people. Roman accounts of battles usually remarked how bulky and muscular the Germanic tribes were, as opposed to their own constitution. Yet, Rome seems bigger than Germania himself, lol

Muscular but not huge or fat: Netherlands, America, Canada, Greece, Denmark

I think Himaruya draws Netherlands as very tall and muscled. Denmark is really tall too. Greece is drawn immensely muscled and tall as well, which is odd for anyone who's ever been to Greece like myself xD

Slender: Italy, Poland, Hong Kong, Iceland, Latvia

I place Hong Kong with America's group; he's taller and bigger than England, or at least looks like it
then again, everybody looks bigger and musclier than England these days xD

It amuses me that you see Estonia as 'curvy', lol. I picture him as a tall and skinny guy it's all that stress

I agree with you about the girls 100%. What do you think about the Nyotalia versions for everyone? I'm curious ^^

[identity profile] rebelkid18.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hungary IMO is the MOST MUSCULAR one!

FFF, she may not show any biceps or triceps, but she totally has them, only that she doesn't show ANYONE, NOT EVEN Austria!!

[identity profile] goatbit.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Hungary is so muscular that her pecs are literally BULGING!!!

(That's why she wears a bra...?)

[identity profile] raienn.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
So much this, it hurts.

[identity profile] mertseguer.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
How I see their bodies depends on the kind of exercise I see them doing and their type of metabolism.

Trained muscle: Rome- 6 pack. (Endomorph. Tendency to accumulate fat) Germany -8 pack (he'd never forget a group of muscles)(Mesomorph. Medium body type/athletic)
You only get a six pack/8 pack if you specifically train for it. In my head the other muscly character don't seem the type to hoist around weights in order to look strong.

Strong man: Russia, Cuba & Turkey (from stronger to weaker, all endomorphs)
Technically they should be the strongest. People only interested in being strong as opposed to also looking strong always have fat on their bodies since it's necessary to develop new muscle)

Active muscle: they do not specifically aim for having muscles or strength but are quite active physically. As for strength, they may be overall stronger or have certain muscle groups better developed then the people in the upper two groups.
-Sweden(endomorph). Hikes/ skies a lot (extra development of legs and ass)
-America(endomorph). Tries to work out like Germany but lacks the discipline
-Netherlands(mesomorph). Swims a lot so has a swimmers body (broad shoulders, slender hips)
-Denmark(mesomorph). Does a lot of sports to burn all his hyper energy but keeps changing constantly.
-Cameroon(mesomorph). Football. (extra legs, rest of the body not so much)
-Germania(mesomorph). Hunting/fighting/stuff German tribes did in those days. Very strong.
-France(mesomorph). Don't think I have to point out what his physical exercise is...

Stringy muscle: They would go in the previous group but their metabolism favours stringy muscles(ectomorph). Also their activities tend to favor elasticity instead of strength.
-Prussia. Still practices a lot of fight sports.
-Spain. Has the body of a bullfighter. He no longer practices in real corridas but still trains (basically he no longer kills the bulls)
-China. Martial arts, taichi etc...
-Australia. Same as Germania only with much less intensity and different metabolism.
-England. Fencing and fighting/running away from France.
-Switzerland. Military training.

No intensive work out
-Endomorph(tend to fat): Finland, Greece
-Mesomorph(tend to athletic): Canada, both Italies, Estonia, Lithuania,Poland, Korea, Iceland.
-Ectomorph(tend to skinny): Latvia, Norway, Egypt, Japan (used to belong to "Stringy muscle but stopped exercising) & other Asian males.

Females:
Intense exercise Belarus (ectomorph) Hungary (mesomorph)
No intense exercise
-Endomorph: Ukraine, Belgium
-Mesomorph: Seychelles
-Ectomorph: Liechtenstein, Asian girls.

[identity profile] mertseguer.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot Austria! ... he'd go in the "No exercise, endomorph" group (Prussia likes to have something to hold on to...)

[identity profile] twyxted-mind.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I- this- you- I think I might have to agree with this, mostly because you've clearly done your homework on this. I'm still amazed by how much thought you put into this.

[identity profile] vysnia-cerasus.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome! You put quite the thought there.

[identity profile] derjmeister.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, most would fall into either the "slim" category or "fit" category, with a few exceptions. IMO, all the Nordics (except maybe Iceland who is still young and will grow into his viking heritage) are probably more fit than average, even though they might not wear that on their sleeves, necessarily (like I'm sure Finland and Norway are probably more cut than you would think). I'd put Denmark in the "muscular" category, but Sweden might be too long-limbed, IMO, for it to be as obvious. It's harder for taller guys to bulk up.

Germany, Netherlands, Turkey, and Cameroon I would also put in the "muscular" category.

Russia, Cuba - Bear-type. Woof.

Then the rest are varying degrees of either skinny or fit.

I draw everybody "too muscular," though (see: http://belligerent.deviantart.com/art/APH-Excessively-Manly-PolLiet-188510959 for example. Warning, risque pic is risque.). It's probably a hilarious narcissism that I use my own arms for reference.

[identity profile] dicloniuslilium.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think America is definitely muscular, if with some lovehandles going on. Russia is probably the same, except with really broad shoulders so his clothes make him look really big.

And I agree that the Italies and Japan are slender/wiry muscled. Just.... yeah, long as they got arms, I like it x3

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Russia is probably the same, except with really broad shoulders so his clothes make him look really big.

*inappropiate nosebleed*

[identity profile] schizounicorn.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, lets see....

Germany: He's pretty big, like a body builder, but not to the point of being gross and looking like he bathes in steroids.

Sweden: I pretty much agree with what op said. Muscular!Sweden FTW.

Finland: He is short and thin (5'5 is short for a dude), but quite toned. Come on, running around in the snow with a sniper rifle or sword will get you quite fit.

Italy: Just a bit less toned than Finland, more slender, but not too girly.

Russia: He's a bit chubby, but not morbidly obease. He has some hidden muscle under all of that fat.

America: Pretty muscular, though not to the extent of Germany.

[identity profile] franceismyhomie.livejournal.com 2011-01-20 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with a lot of the above ideas, but I think that Canada would be as muscular as America. If you've seen him, he's always wearing baggy sweaters, so he could be probably hiding a lot of muscular underneath that he's gained from playing hockey, lacrosse and basketball [it originated in Canada, after all]. I know a lot of guys who play hockey [which isn't surprising cuz I'm in Canada] and they're all a lot stronger than our friends who doesn't play hockey and other sports. Canada's hockey is America's football, really.

Norway is probably really strong too - I mean, he was a VIKING for crying out loud! I know he looks really uke but vikings are so tough and manly *.* Norway's probably one of those nations who tries not to bring attention to his strength and hides it using his clothing.

I think the Italy brothers have some muscular, but they look frail in comparison to Germany. Honestly, I have this mini-headcanon that Romano does a bit of Jersey Shoresque GTL [gym, tan, laundry]...or at least, he tries to and then gets too lazy to continue.

Russia is probably one of those types, like me, that have hardened muscle underneath a layer of fat. Like Norway and others, Russia probably hides the fact that he's muscular underneath that giant coat. I mean, the guy's already intimidating as it is, imagine how terrified everyone would be when he took off his jacket and everyone saw muscle there? I think he tries to cover up his strength in order to seem friendlier, and because brute strength isn't really his thing. /sees him as cunning strategist

And tbh, I think Belgium is pretty curvy and very feminine, but if she's attacked she can produce a pretty mean right/left hook. Belarus probably trains and is muscular but hides it under that dress. Ukraine is all curves, but she can defend herself if something happens. I think Liechtenstein wants to train to be as strong as her brother [though he probably isn't quite that muscular, depending more on his weaponry to help him win a fight] but she's too young right now. Same goes with Seychelles.

Hungary is probably as muscular as Prussia - considering they were friends as children and probably did boyish things like workout and train together. Austria...Austria and Estonia strike me as men who aren't into the whole bodybuilding thing and prefer doing their own thing rather than fight, and would probably defeat someone in a fight using their wits rather than brute strength. Hungary can probably beat Austria in an arm wrestle, but if it came to a strategized fight, Austria would win.

And of course, England has some muscle. He's the motherloving British Empire after all, and I'm sure he used some brute force while colonizing. Same goes with Spain. They've let themselves go since those imperialistic days, but they're still pretty strong. France seems like the type who wouldn't work out, but he likes to keep himself in shape because he knows he's more attractive to men and women when he has some muscle to show off.

I'd go on about other nations, but I think I've written too much as it is 8D

[identity profile] orchidbreezefc.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Cool that there's a topic about this. I've always had very specific ideas about the muscleature of these specific characters for some reason. Drives me nuts when I try to draw them because I'm just learning how to vary figures and none too good at making it apparent.

Anyway, everyone's basically said everything already, but I do have a couple ideas I haven't seen:

-I see Prussia as really skinny, for some reason. Maybe it's the fact that he had malnutrition as a child, or the fact that my mom's side of the family (Prussian in origin) tends to be super-thin. He's surely all for brute strength, but then again he'd probably have a tough time staying motivated if he doesn't fight very often. Really, I think it's safe to say that no one's quite as strong as he used to be.
-I see fem!Russia as the Big Beautiful Woman type, to the point where I can't stand fanart where she's slender.

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
basically this

Image (http://img375.imageshack.us/i/espaldasq.jpg/)

but with stronger Russia

[identity profile] pip-kin.livejournal.com 2011-02-01 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Extremely muscular:
Rome: He's been doing a lot of fighting, and it's obvious even from early strips that he's gotten quite large muscle-wise from it. Maybe he also looks bigger because he isn't as tall as some of the Germanics.

Germany: He trains a lot for the purpose and is canonly one of the big guys.

Musculer but with padding:
Russia: Of course he's got some fat on him! He needs all the padding for those hard Russian winters <3

Cuba: I think Cuba is quite used to living the life XD

Finland: Even though he doesn't seem to be as large as the other two, it makes perfect sense when you look at his somewhat chubbier face.

Definitely large and muscular, but not huge:
Turkey: Other than putting Turkey in this category, I also can't help but seeing him as a little more than slightly narcissistic XD (all that bathing even before the middle ages! Fffft)

Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark: They have a past that suggest a lot of fighting as well on Sweden and Denmark's part, hunting and even more hand-to-hand combat. Nowadays, they're all nations that hold sports in high regard (with football as the common denominator) so I could imagine them all being packed with muscles but having gained it without deliberate training, therefore there is no such things as six-packs.

Germania: Really, he fits into the same category as above.

Greece: All his athletics should have at least done something, shouldn't it? XD

Toned:
America, Canada: They seem to have largely the same body-structure, although my personal headcanon is that America is just that but more chubby because of his diet.

Prussia, France: I actually view France as being in the upper category of "toned" slightly more than Prussia but with Prussia being a little taller than France. I could blame it on Himaryua's drawing of a manry broad-ish France back in the Christmas Bloodbath, pfft. (idk, it makes sense to me, ok?)

Switzerland, Spain: They're toned, but not overly so.

Norway: He's a Norseman like Sweden and Denmark, and he's been doing quite a lot of fighting of his own. I do think he is naturally a little less bulky than the other two Scandinavians, and thus would fit rather well in this category.

Lithuania: That guys doesn't get nearly enough credit for his body work XD I honestly don't think he's all that skinny.

Skinny or slender (or both):
China, Korea, Egypt, England, Austria, Japan, Italy, Poland, Hong Kong, Iceland, Latvia: They all seem rather skinny to me. Especially China, Egypt and Japan for some reason. Maybe they just all have a high metabolism? Iceland is portrayed as young, so that might be the answer for his figure. Austria to me, borders on being toned, but his lack of physical activity suggests that he belongs here.

Estonia: Being very technical, non-too-warring and quite tall for his age, it's safe to say that Estonia might be fit, but he's definitely slender.

Girls

Toned and/or curvy:
Hungary: Everyone ought to know the explanation to this one?

Ukraine: You can /hear/ her boobs jiggling.

Monaco: Not too much known about her as a character, but I gather that Monaco would be the liezure type.

Belgium: She's both curvy AND I honestly think she's hiding a rather mean right hook.

Taiwan: A hard worker for sure!

Slender:
Belarus: Besides her being the tallest of all the girls, she's also rather slender. It makes sense and seems rather natural.

Liechtenstein: She's slender, but I can entertain the idea of Switzerland getting her to work out, lol.

Seychelles: Nothing else than her just seeming very slender in all her official fanart.
