Bleat, Howl
On some days, especially warm spring days like this one, Feliciano would lie out on his back in the sunny fields outside the forest and let the breeze ruffle his hair and fleece.
Hm? Dear reader, why are you looking at me like that?
What do you mean Feliciano doesn’t have fleece? Of course he does. It’s white and fluffy and well taken care of, but not out of vanity; when he cuddled with some else, he liked to be as soft and comfortable as possible, so whoever he cuddled with would want to stay longer! People – creatures – like him, somehow human and somehow not, were awfully lonely, especially Feliciano. Full-humans thought they were cursed, and full-animals thought they really were human, so to get any kind of living being other than themselves to keep them company was so very hard.
Luckily for Feliciano, humans were kinder to him, perhaps because he was partly a sheep. Little children from the neighboring villages sometimes came to visit him and would snuggle into his fleece and it tickled and he loved it! So he wanted to keep it clean. He had tried explaining it to his brother, Lovino, but the other sheep-man had just yelled at him for getting close to the humans.
“They’ll grow up and forget you, anyway,” Lovino had huffed, and left his brother alone, presumably to sulk.
This had saddened Feliciano a little, but hey, blue feelings always went away when he went to lay in the field, so that is where we find him, dear reader, watching the clouds pass overhead with a little smile.
Yes, all was quite peaceful…until a loud, pained howl echoed from the forest, mingled with a snap and a rustle of leaves.
“Veee!” The sound made Feliciano jump, and he tensed immediately. That was a wolf’s howl, he knew it! And wolves ate sheep, didn’t they? Even his unruly curl of human hair was shivering as he rolled onto his stomach and hid his face in the grass, hoping that if he stayed still, the wolves would pass…
But, strangely enough, there was no thumping of paws or threatening panting coming his way. Instead, only another anguished howl echoed out…but wait, there were words mixed in, making a sound only creatures like Feliciano could understand.
“HELP…HEEEEELP…!” The words were followed by pained whimpers. It tugged something inside Feliciano, made him look up with wide brown eyes into the forest.
“V-vee…whoever that could be…sounds real hurt…” His arms trembled as he started to get up. “E-even if they sound like a, like a w-wolf…” He gulped. “I c-cant just…let them be hurt…”
And so, with this as his resolve, Feliciano made his way into the woods. The trees were tall, and flush with leaves, blocking out so much light…the shadows and the rustling seemed more sinister with every step, and twice Feliciano stumbled and fell and shrieked in fear, thinking he had fallen into some hunter’s trap. Thank goodness he had only tripped on some roots.
He eventually came to a small clearing where, on the far edge, he saw –
He saw a leg! Oh, from the top of it, there was what looked like lustrous, dark grey fur that tapered off into a more human-looking leg. But what had happened? That leg was caught in steel teeth, some blood staining the fur. Hopefully, the limb could be saved, but this was the wild! No doctor treated their kind when it came to injuries or anything. Worry overtaking fear, Feliciano darted forward, but before he could get more than halfway across the clearing, there came a pained grunt.
Feliciano stopped dead in his tracks, eyes wide.
The injured wolf-man, before hidden by the shadows of the trees, stirred, and sat up. He was rather muscular, and right now his strong chest was heaving, as if the lungs inside were struggling for air. His human hair was yellow, slicked back and only broken by two pert wolf ears, and his eyes were a clear, clear blue…but they were filled with so much pain.
And, after taking in the damage done to his leg, the owner of those eyes turned them on the frightened Feliciano.
They stared at each other for a moment; the wolf’s face showed nothing but pain, and Feliciano was shaking so thoroughly now, fear mixed with horror mixed with something small that he couldn’t name…curiosity, maybe?
“…” The wolf broke his gaze, letting in a ragged breath. “Please.” His voice came out rough. “Please help me.”
And oh, dear reader, even Feliciano, frightened little lamb that he was, couldn’t ignore a request for help. He immediately rushed forward, as if commanded, and kneeled by the wolf.
“I, I…” Even his voice was coming out funny. “I don’t know what y-you’d like me to do, Mister Wolf…” Blue eyes flickered up at him, containing a hint of exasperation.
“I’m, I’m going to…open the trap.” Two strong hands grasped the edges of the contraption. “If, if you could, please…move my leg away from it…” Feliciano nodded eagerly, gently grasping the other creature’s ankle.
“Ve, of course!”
The wolf seemed to steady his nerves before yanking the trap open with his bare hands, letting out a pained gasp as the steel teeth left his leg. Some more blood gushed out, and Feliciano bit his lip, half in disgust and half in wonder at how long the other could last if he kept losing blood. When there was enough room, Feliciano gingerly moved the leg up and out of the trap, setting it to the side in the grass. The wolf had grimaced, but it couldn’t be helped; the leg had to be moved, even if more pain was caused to do so. On instinct, Feliciano started to run his hands through his fleece, grasping onto any piece that might be loose. Since he usually cleaned it all the time, there never was much to be found, but today he was lucky, and pressed a clump of fleece to the worst of the wound, trying to stem the flow of blood. As the wolf closed the trap again, he looked at what Feliciano was doing.
“…Oh…” The sheep-man looked up, giving his companion a smile. “This will help it, right?” He dabbed at the wound, pouting as the fleece became saturated with blood. “It’d be best if it stopped soon, though…”
“…” A hand was placed over Feliciano’s. “That can wait.” Brown eyes looked up at blue, questioning. “There is a stream nearby. If you could help me get there…we could clean it properly…” Nodding, Feliciano scrambled to his feet, helping the other get to his own, and they set off. The wolf really was muscular, and a bit heavier than Feliciano, so he struggled a little, but he was able to follow the other’s instructions and made sure he sat comfortably at the bank of the forest’s stream, letting the injured leg rest in the running water. The excess blood was thick in the water at first, but with Feliciano’s fleece and attention, it soon slowed to thin ribbons of red.
“Ve…does, does it feel broken…?” He asked, when most of the pain had melted away from the wolf’s face. He shook his head.
“The trap was not made well. It did not sink too far in.” He scowled, the tip of a fang peeking over his lower lip. “I should have been more careful in the first place…letting myself get caught like that…” Eyes widening, Feliciano placed a warm hand on the other’s knee.
“But it was an accident! Those happen all the time, and you’re okay, right?” A snarl made Feliciano jump, and he took his hand away.
“An accident like that could get an idiot killed!” The wolf growled, his face immediately in front of Feliciano’s and his eyes cold. “Any injury like this, any at all, could mean the end for one of us…especially for someone as naïve to say what you just said.” The words made Feliciano shake again, and he would have stumbled back, if he could find the strength to move.
“V-v-v-ve…I-I’m sorry…” Oh God, he couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t breathe. “J-just please d-d-don’t eat me, p-please…”
Maybe it was the shaking, or the pathetically obvious fear in Feliciano’s voice, but the wolf’s eyes warmed, and his expression softened.
“…I’m not going to eat you,” He finally said, “I wouldn’t hurt the one who saved me. Besides,” He looked out into the distance, a slight frown on his face. “I am not hungry.”
These words quelled Feliciano’s shakes. Soon, he was able to breathe, to move, and he moved closer to the other, a little smile on his lips. “V-ve…that’s good to hear.” He could feel his little stub of a tail start to wag. “Y-You know, when I heard you howling before, I was real scared…but I’m glad I came to help! You’re nice, Mister Wolf!”
The other coughed, his cheeks pink. “Could, could you not call me that? I have a name.”
“But you haven’t told it to me yet!”
“…It’s Ludwig.”
Ooh! Feliciano liked that name, it was a nice name.
“Vee, and I’m Feliciano!” He leaned forward, trying to catch the wolf’s – no, Ludwig’s – gaze. He got it. “So does this mean we can be friends? Oh, but you have to promise not to ever eat me, even if you’re hungry, okay?” Ludwig looked at him incredulously.
“…God, you really are naïve,” He said, half amazed, and Feliciano laughed and leaned against Ludwig, all his fear gone.
