NY Times coverage of NYCC/AF

Just thought this was funny:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/14/fashion/14COMICON.html?_r=1&scp=4&sq=lolita&st=cse

"...wore a unicorn corsage on her khaki outfit, the
uniform of the character Hetalia in “Axis Powers,” a popular video
game."

Character named Hetalia.

Video game.

Oh, NYTimes... /limphand.gif

Wow. Just wow. I love it when that happens.

I never understand why it is so hard for news writers to report accurately on these kinds of things.

[identity profile] omgimsuchadork.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG New York Times, why?! You're supposed to be reputable!

Buying the newspaper today (augh, so long two dollars ;A;) and writing in about it. And e-mailing.

Also, not that I'm complaining, but I wonder why the article focused on females cosplaying female characters?

Melanie Farnsworth wore a unicorn corsage on her khaki outfit, the uniform of the character Hetalia in “Axis Powers,” a popular video game. “Dressing up as the character allows you to walk in her shoes,” said Ms. Farnsworth, 20. “That gives you a great sense of freedom.”

Please tell me I understood that sentence wrong because I'm a foreigner. HER shoes? So apparently there's a video game named "Axis Powers", where the female main character is named Hetalia. Did I get that right, yes? Never heard of that game.

But somehow it's great to see news writers around the world are all equally stupid uninformed and fail to research what they are writing about.

No, unfortunetly, you did not understand the sentece wrong.

England = Useless Italy. WUT.
Where is this "Axis Powers" video game, NY Times, and why do I not own it?

[identity profile] narutosgrrl13.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
PFFFT.

I lol'd.

I want this "Axis Powers" video game. >:|

[identity profile] kenichi-bokushi.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hetalia is the coolest video game character ever. I especially like making him drink his "tea" and seeing him run naked through Miracle Train and Starry Sky's houses.

This is right up there with TIME's report on anime conventions where they called it "Access Powers Hitalia" (with FUNimation's correctly-spelt cover clearly shown on-screen)!

Oh, New York Times. You're just not with the kids, are you?

[identity profile] awww-applesauce.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This is prolly on the same level as CNN doing a report[with pictures] on NYCC and they talked about cosplay...but showed Lolita's. Lolita is a type of fashion... and not too many anime/manga have lolita characters.[the style not little girls. lol]

Is it so hard to do a little bit of research? =/

But where is this Axis Powers game they speak of. I must play the character called Hetalia.

[identity profile] mogumogu.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of cosplayers don't know the difference either.

One thing you have to keep in mind is the reporters are getting the information from the fans themselves. I hate to say it, but sometimes fangirls are not always very clear with their language. If they happened to be talking to an unclear person, a mistake like this does not surprise me.

......See, this is why people think we're weird. 8|

....Although the NYTimes might have been censoring the "England" thing because it might get people as controversial or something. IDFK.

This reminds me of the Hebrew dub of YYH where they changed Yusuke Urameshi's name to Yu Yu Hakusho.

Although less official. And slightly stupider. SLIGHTLY.

because I used to be a yyh nerd

...Well, this certainley says a lot the NYTimes.

I need this lovely "Axis Powers" Game. I really do hope it's on the DS.

[identity profile] mizabee.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, there's a part of me that wants to troll a mainstream reporter covering a con if I ever get the opportunity to be interviewed just to see what I could get away with telling them before they started questioning and researching on their own.

This sort of things always happens whenever they or anyone else reports on anything remotely "nerdy" or "otaku"-oriented :V

Maybe if they got their facts straight things wouldn't always sound so "wtf"ery for dem normies OTL

Oh well, at least it's kinda amusing to imagine Fem!England using Hetalia as an Alias in the video game Axis Powers. Flying Mint Bunny is clearly her guide and helps her transform into the magical pretty soldier Britania Angel Peach
