Title: Taiwan-kun & Hong Kong-san in colour? xD
Author/Artist: Original by Himaruya, colouring by [livejournal.com profile] kagamimi ~
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Male Taiwan + Hong Kong
Rating: E for everyone? orz
Warnings: None. owob
Summary:

Uhm, again my Asian bias shows. |D Instead of homework, I ended up colouring the chibi Taiwan-kun from a while back, and then also the Hong Kong from recent. owob

Both are somewhat resized because I was just comparing the eyebrows at first (OTL), but then just decided to colour it. :'D Also my first time attempting to imitate Himaruya's colouring style, so I apologize for mistakes or inaccuracies. OTL

Full version~

I was really stuck on how to colour Taiwan-kun's clothes, so I'm sorry if they look bad. ;u; I just kind of picked the colours on his flag |D

I don't know what that thing beside Hong Kong is, so I just coloured it. If anyone knows, please tell me and I can fix it.

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] dotted_tofu for telling me it was a mooncake. XD All I did was adjust hue though OTL

xD Also I cannot colour dragons lions (ty [livejournal.com profile] jamminbison :'D) right orz I apologize. Hong may look somewhat different, because I coloured Taiwan first and kind of forgot exactly what I did. |D Fail memory is fail.

Feel free to use for any graphics and stuff \owo/

Oh wow, wonderful coloring!
I love how you did the highlights in the clothes & hair and the general shading style reminds me of Himaruya's in a way.

Keep up the good work! 8Db

Also I cannot colour dragons right orz I apologize.

It's not a dragon, it's a fut san style lion...for lion dancing. :]

[identity profile] jamminbison.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people get it confused! The 'lions' are based off this mythological creature, Nian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nian) and is about 2,000 years old, flourishing more so in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and other Chinese enclaves than it's actual home. XD

[identity profile] jamminbison.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they are guardian lions, commonly known as fu/foo lions, but have many different catergories of lions or are sometimes an early form/misinterpretation of the Qilin. The lions for lion dance have a different origin, but also have Buddhist connections. There's also a theory that the Asiatic lion did exist in China when it was originally thought not to.

[identity profile] jamminbison.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Lions have a rather large signifigance in the three continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa - as you can probably tell by how often they appear in signs of hierarchy and power. There's even a lion dance and references to lions in Japanese/Tibet/Korean culture.

I'm happy to share the info! It's also good to note that the Chinese dragon is not a dragon, but a lung, just as the Chinese phoenix is not a phoenix, but fenghuang - which bring up both a conceptual and language difference in the two figures.

[identity profile] jamminbison.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! Dragons in the west as symbols of greed (Scandanavia, etc.) and evil, mostly stemming from the use of it as a symbol of the Devil in the Holy Bible. They are also associated with fire. However, in most of Asia, they are symbols of a healing nature, associated with water and are benevolent opposed to the evil figures that knights chased after in Europe. Phoenix in the west is seen as an eagle type figure, while in the east it is a combo of a rooster and other creatures. Fenghuang also is associated with yang, as you may have seen the dragon/phoenix combo likely (it's modern yin yang comparison and used traditionally to show union between a man and a woman in marriage).

So nice! Did you use sai?

[identity profile] attashi.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's so good! May I ask what brushes you used? I have been trying to colour like that for a while but it is so hard, especially with skin and hair DX

[identity profile] attashi.livejournal.com 2010-08-30 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
