[Cosplay] Help a bro out?

Alright~ Hi there fandom. 8D....

Hnn...I need some help out people. Cosplaying in August for a con and I'd love to cosplay as Denmark. Shouldn't be too hard, I've only really cosplayed, like...three times. My first time was a total fail, but it was still fun. My second time was actually pretty awesome. I worked hard on that one.

I got all my materials at a thrift store and goodwill and had a friend's mom help me out with some of the details. (It was Tenten from Naruto, so pretty easy.)

That isn't really relevant, but, all I'm saying I have sorta experience on these things, very minimal experience. I don't know how to sew for shit either. Me and a sewing machine wouldn't get along, and needles...well that's a whole different story there.

Denmark is who I'm aiming for currently! I got questions though...just below the cut. C:

First off, I got the main outfit sorta figured out, wasn't too hard there, what is getting to me is two things though. How do I make Denmark's little hat and the axe. I really have no idea where I could get an axe and I doubt I could on such short notice. So I thought to myself, I can just create it myself if I only knew how. The axe that is.

So, people, you willing to help me out with the axe? I would really like to go with it seeing as how it would feel like it completes my Denmark cosplay. Not saying I need it completely, but it would be pretty awesome if I did y'know?

The hat is a must...I need to know how to make/get the hat somehow! You know that cute little hat would help me with everything! If no one knows anything on the axe, just help with the hat would be good. So...uh..please, please, I'm begging. 8D HELP! <3 Would be much appreciated.

well, you can go a few different ways with the axe! you could make it out of papier mâché, but i REALLY don't recommend that as your axe could be knocked about quite a bit and it's not that sturdy. costume shops stock plastic axes sometimes (for viking outfits and all that!), so if you don't mind looking a bit ridiculous or funny, you could try that? i'd recommend other materials, but they really do require some experience, so...

and the hat is something called a pillbox hat. you can buy them online and edit them, or you can google a pattern to make one yourself! it's really not that hard :>

hope that helps ♥ good luck!

I guess the axe depends on what you want to do with it and how the rules of the con that you'll attend are.

For actually using it & a con that is okay with weapons made of wood: I'd totally recommend woodwork.
For a con that has banned dangerous materials, I'd recommend a wooden core (like a broomstick or something) and cardboard or styrofoam.

Though, what I really recommend is... check out what your parents have lying around, and what you can get help with.

...and you'll of course have to paint that stuff. durr.

For the axe, I'd recommend making one of wood (I simply think it'll hold pretty good xD)
Otherwise, you could do like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5mC43OjfdI only that you cut it out like his axe is shaped.
Anyhow, good luck with you Denmark cosplay!

I'd recommend cardboard, I've made some extras fr my cosplays with it, and i found it pretty easy to work with.

Paper mache is also good, and pretty resistant! (:

Oh I think I can help you with that hat!
My friend recently linked me to this website which shows how to make a Danish WWII hat which I think his little hat is based off. You probably want to skrink the pattern down because Denmark somehow got his hat to a ridiculous size sooo...
Also another problem I think the website is in Danish (I myself can't even read it) but I find the pictures pretty helpful.

I hope that helps you!

just sayin': you could probably use babelfish for a rough translation of this!

I'm kinda curious, what con are you going to? I'm going to a con in August too, and it'll be my first time cosplaying. :o

True true, but I'm worried some sewing terms might turn into other weird words. (Does help understand some of it though)
But it seems like a pretty easy construction

Lucky for me, I have a friend who was in stagecraft and she made me an awesome axe for my cosplay from just a wooden dowel and plywood, if you have acess to a sander and a bandsaw the process wasn't too hard, you just need patience and a lot of spraypaint. (seen here if you're wondering~ http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l4wvbk7c1w1qa2xemo1_500.jpg ) if you don't, well, I've seen people take like a thick poaster board type material and put it through a similar process with shaping and several coats of paint, it doesn't look half bad...
And um, the little hat I sewed out of a faux leather material and I used a modified version of a garrison cap pattern I scoured the internet to find, If I can find and upload the pdf I'll link it back to you if you want, but if you're not confident in your sewing skills (because thick material+tiny proportions=very messy) I'd be glad to make one for you for a small fee.
I- I hope I helped at least a bit :'3 It took me a while to get everything together for my denmark cosplay but it made the con I went to worthwhile, tons of people taking pictures of you and stuff.

Just a quick note for you with a little info X3;;
Denmark's hat isn't all that small actually, it's a baret like France and Prussia wears. Really, I have no idea why people tend to make it so small. ^^;

The axe might be made from cutting out amore firm type of foam in sections, then glued together and secured/decorated with ducktape?

I actually believe it's a Garrison cap http://www.cosplay.com/showpost.php?p=3276969&postcount=966
