4th Of July! (AmericaxBelarus) Help Please?

I posted this also in knifeburger, but the more people know the better! 4th Of July! As everyone is very much aware. That's America's Independence's day and thus Alfred F. Jone's birthday! I do not know if this isn't allowed but I really wish to draw something between the next few days as my own adition to the AlfredxNatalia fandom!

So, now for my reason I posted this little thing for. My head's at a total blank! What would be the best gift for Alfred F. Jones from his would be girlfriend Natalia Arlovskaya? While keeping things in character of course! Either from a little comic idea to an actual big picture! Suggestions are much appreciated! I really need something good, the more ideas the better!

I had the cake idea with the lady, being forced by moi but then I was like, nah the idea is to overdone, so I really wish to give Alfred a very nice gift! He's the hero who needs more lovin' and is greatly misunderstood after all. ~ ღ

[With this I formally introduce myself to this club and hope we can all get along! I hope I didn't mess up with the post]

Alfred☆Natalia~!!!

Your comment frustrates me.

We shippers shouldn't have to defend ourselves. We love what we love. No one should have to answer why they love US/Belarus, Germany/Italy, Austria/Hungary, or any other pairing! Everyone has their own reason for shipping who they ship.

And yes, there are plenty of folks who ship this pairing. [livejournal.com profile] snowchildhero and [livejournal.com profile] knifeburger are communities with an active following dedicated to the pairing.

You, my friend, have excellent taste. :)

[identity profile] tearfulyandere.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
What can I say? I'm British:-P

Living up in the North of Kirkland I've got to have some taste right? :-D

[identity profile] deadsweetheart.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I'm currently residing on Alfred's glasses. The difference between Upper and Lower Arthur is beyond me. XD

But fine taste isn't limited by geography. :)

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
ANY America/Belarus fan that would read your comment would be irritated because you're basically saying our ship is wrong and illogical. Doesn't matter who it's directed at.

[identity profile] choco-bani.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I digress. America/Belarus is one of my favourite straight pairings in Hetalia, and I took no offense in [livejournal.com profile] pastapastapasta's comment, and in fact took it to be a good question. One shouldn't have to be flamed for asking a question, otherwise no one would ask questions at all. And she was asking the basis of the pairing because she didn't initially understand it. And she does explain that she didn't mean to offend anyone in asking such a question.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
idk, but I find it completely inappropriate to bring it up as a completely off topic comment. Also the way she phrased her question was really condescending. "I'm not sure I understand this pairing's primary appeal. Could someone maybe explain please?" would've sufficed without all the "blah blah Belarus only loves Russia" stuff.

[identity profile] snowcoatedblade.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This, exactly this.

I'm glad that in the end things were civil, though, it is why I like this fandom.

[identity profile] choco-bani.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
People have different ways of saying things, and maybe she just wanted to be more direct. I'm not speaking for her, but I'm just saying that everyone really should just back off, since the poster did explain, and she herself did not find it offending, from what I've read.

[identity profile] choco-bani.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
OP* even, whatever. :I

[identity profile] snowcoatedblade.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between being direct and being condescending. The way they worded their first post was not terribly respectful, and easy to misunderstand. But from what I can see, it seems like it is cleared up now anyway, and people are simply giving their reasons.

[identity profile] drmacabre.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The way you phrased your first question is what riled people up, followed by your laughing at the mere idea of it. It does indeed come off as quite condescending.

I don't see chemistry between those two either, but who am I to laugh at others for what they like? If I did that, I'd laugh myself to death. Especially in this fandom.

You say you see Hungary/Belarus based on sexual frustration. What exactly is so funny about applying this idea to America/Belarus?

Yeah, the OP obviously has romantic notions here. That's not the point. My point is that you yourself ship something relatively uncommon in this fandom, which renders your first question invalid.

[identity profile] tearfulyandere.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, if there are two characters in a fandom, and that includes Hetalia, someone somewhere out there is going to ship them, and chances are they won't be alone.

As far as Bela-erica goes this isn't the first I've heard of it (there's an Au Belarus obsessed with Alfred out there in the APH dressing rooms).

As much as it isn't something I ship I can see how it can easily work.

As stated below, it is some what of an opposites attract thing. Alfred is everything that Belarus isn't (loud, chatty, sociable). Belarus brings the more serious parts to the relationships, however that's not the only support (after all, plenty of people are opposites without being partnered).

Alfred himself is shown up for being this carefree, completely unaware of everything, hero obsessed doofus (sorry Alfred!), but his history is dark enough that you have to wonder just how much of that is an act, it must surely be a relief to be able to not have to be all that and more 100% of the time, with Natalia he would be able to just relax and not worry about his hero complex. There would never be an expectation to save her, and if she's a bit cold, well, he's certainly more than man enough to deal with that.

On her side of things, constantly trailing after Ivan can not be an easy task, she quite possibly needs more help than she's willing to admit to, Alfred if he wanted to be with her, would be there however many times she told him to leave or she'd stab him, with perseverance true friendship (however twisted) can be won. Add to the fact that they are indeed viewed in the Brother/Sister relationship, and that we already know how much Natalia actually cares about being related, you have a rather accessible but still challenging (sorry Lithuania, I know you love her to pieces but she's rather obviously not interested in being fawned over), game to play at least while Ivan still refuses to play ball. It is canon for Alfred to not be afraid of Belarus (for whatever reasons), that's got to be quite refreshing in some ways).

As far as Natalia and Ivan go, yes, everyone knows she loves him and wants to marry him, however, this obsession from what I've been able to see is based more upon the idea of being united for ever and strengthening what they used to have. Ivan himself is never going to love her back, if anything she terrifies him, he's always running away, so there could even be an element of using Alfred to get to Ivan in there also.

This has become a lot longer than I thought it would, and if I've repeated some of what the OP put I apologise, I wanted to put forth the opinions of a more unbiased POV.

For me I can see more canon supporting America/Belarus (or with her personality I do wonder if this shouldn't be Belarus/America (I wonder who would top in this relationship...), than I can for Hungary Belarus if only because Belarus doesn't seem all that worried about the sexual side of things from what I can see and also Hungary is from what I can gather actually a girlfriend of Austria and used to be his wife for a while. So there are some arguments against the pairing of Belarus and Hungary also.

tl:dr - fandom will do what fandom will do, if one looks hard enough one will always find support for ones personal preference.

XD! It's a curse of mine to be able to see reasons for pairings even if I can't bring myself to ship them (except post game!Sephiroth and Post game!Aeris... I will -never- understand that one... not ever... but I digress).

you're probably going to get a few flamers for the way you've phrased your question sadly, it does read like you're trying to criticise her choice although I admit I went to check your profile (and userpics, I'm a userpic fan!), so having read through that I can see you're not actually trying to pick an argument but just have trouble with phrasing things sometimes?

Sadly, fans get very defensive about the things they like to the point that they will rise up against anyone who they think might try to quell that, it's in some ways understandable since sometimes we genuinely have to (some people seriously do try to bring across a "my way is right so your way must be wrong" method of things which tends to rile people and put their backs up, it also means they look for that and see it in the simplest of things on occasion even when it wasn't meant that way. I do promise not all fans are like that though so please dont' be scared off from the fandom ok?

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
....Um yeah, sorry but this kind of is a rude comment and is pretty damn out of line IMO. People shouldn't have to defend their ships. People ship a lot of things for very shallow reasons. For example, why do people ship Prussia/Canada? There's not much in way of canon or history to base it on. But if people want to ship it, then that's fine and they aren't required to explain themselves. I ship S. Korea/Ukraine solely because breasts. I shouldn't have to defend myself for it.

There is some history between Belarus and America. Also it's possible that Belarus isn't all "RUSSIA! LET'S GET MARRIED MARRIED MARRIED" all the time. We've only seen her in a few strips from a similar time period. That could've been a phase. And even then, America could potentially change her mind. There ARE reasons for this pair. You don't have to support it, but replying to an America/Belarus thread with "why do you ship this?" is really asinine.

There's no way you're not aware of all the shipwars in this fandom

Why would you even

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
....

If you're fully aware of the shipwars, then it should be kind of obvious that people have their pairings bashed all the time. And that it's worse for people that ship rarer pairings that are "rival" pairings to a hugely popular pair. Which America/Belarus is. Against USUK. The most popular pairing in the fandom. As well as Russia/America. Which is also very popular. Also no het pairings get much love in this fandom compared to guy on guy. And female characters get bashed a lot. So fans of het pairs that "rival" big pairings get it even worse.

Because of the air of "you're wrong for liking this" that your initial comment had. Maybe it was unintentional, idk, but it's pretty easy to get that impression when you say things like "I doubt she'd EVER date him.".

[identity profile] snowcoatedblade.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an silly comment, especially coming from a fandom where 75% of the romantic pairings make ZERO sense except in head canon. Including your own!

Other people have made their case already, but here's a response I wrote for a recent shipper survey about why you think they're compatiable, figured I'd add it to the pile. Just a warning though, this did come out of head canon, however, I feel as if that is how it goes for many pairings!

First off, I am going to say something that will make most people on here want to kill me. I think America is straight. Or at the very least,REALLY REALLY LIKES TITS. He reminds me too much of too many insanely straight guys I know. This does NOT mean I hate yaoi, this does NOT mean I haven't drooled and oogled over Russia/America and England/America fanart, or dappled in the occasional fic and such. I AM open minded! But as far as my personal head canon goes, I see Alfred working best with a woman.

As for Belarus...In my head canon, she is on the outside a seemingly strong, quiet, ice bitch, who would cut your throat in a heartbeat. But on the inside, she is deeply passionate, stubborn, with a need to be desired and a desire to be needed. She believes Ivan can give this to her, but as things go along, she is learning little by little that he is unable to. She survived World War II, and if you know anything about Belarus during that time, a THIRD of the population was slaughtered. Natalia has been through a lot.

Alfred is loud, brash, quick to run his mouth, almost always has a smile...pretty much the opposite of everything she has ever known. He comes from a stable country with happy children who have never known the same kind of devastation that the children from her nation have...and that appeals to her. He is also not afraid of her, and not afraid to show affection, give her compliments, and simply love her. These are not things that she would immediately accept, in fact, she'd down right reject him at first. But she would be curious about him.

Historically speaking, I like to think of it as the story of Belarus breaking away from communism, and following in the footsteps of America. Love story wise, it is just the story of a girl realizing that she had always loved the wrong man, while the right one patiently waited for her to come home.

Beyond this, doujinshi and art by Black Sheep Productions (http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=696759) have gorgeous stories and art that really bring the pairing to life. Even if I didn't ship it, I don't think I could NOT love this artist.

[livejournal.com profile] bielorussia, this is a question you asked on the pairing comm, which is probably where it should have stayed. Pairing questions at large can be touchy subjects because people have different preferences, and Het fans are not the majority in Hetalia. Not that you did anything wrong, but I would recommend keeping pairing discussions to places where you know people won't be "OMG WHY THE FUCK DO YOU SHIP IT!!!!!!one!!!!1" Maybe just post the fic on the main comm when you're done!

*high five* Huzzah for straight America!

Thank you for being open to listening to our thoughts! I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but it seems to have worked out in the end. Yeah, some fandoms get VERY crazy with pairing wars and have fans who feel the need to put fans of other pairings down. It's REALLY ridiculous, and I'm glad I haven't personally experienced it in Hetalia yet. Over all, this fandom is pretty cool! So yeah, thanks for being cool about it!

[identity profile] snowcoatedblade.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Don't think my comment is in any way blaming you! It was in response to [livejournal.com profile] pastapastapasta. Thankfully [livejournal.com profile] pastapastapasta didn't mean to be condescending, and was very open to hearing about why people like the pairing! So in the end it was totally fine!

The reason I suggest leaving it to the pairing communities isn't because it is an official rule, and like I said, you did nothing wrong. However, in my experiences in any fandom, people can get really bitchy about pairings, especially if they "break up" their own. It gets to the point where some forums actually have no pairing discussion rules except on specific threads. Even in places that don't have these rules in place, you always run the risk of having someone wank at you if you open the floor for pairing discussion. Particularly when you ask about a specific one, because then people who don't ship it and feel like being jerks about it can crash the party.

Thankfully from what I've seen of the Hetalia fandom, it's been pretty respectful over all! Even the person above seemed to have just made an honest mistake with their wording. But it's just a piece of advice from someone who has been doing the fandom thing for over a decade, and knows a few things about avoiding wank.

[identity profile] ginnyseta.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything's been said already, but I am going to add that [livejournal.com profile] knifeburger has some translated doujin strips that just totally made me fall in love with the pairing, by the artist mentioned in the comment above (one is F-locked, though.)

I have always been a sucker for love/hate relationships, probably because that's what my own relationship is like (and we're actually married!) My boycreature reminds me TOO MUCH of Alfred, and Nat reminds me a bit of how I was before I met him (sans actual incest and restraining order level stalking >.>) Beyond that though, it just LOOKS cute to me. Hungary/Belarus is pretty fucking sexy too, and I'd be all over the porn for that in two seconds flat. But yeah, AlNata is my OTP, and I'm cool if people don't like, I know it is really fucking weird. As long as they are respectful about it, it's all good.

And as for [livejournal.com profile] bielrussia comment, I'll probably comment on the actual pairing comm...I owe you replies to your comments! You will get them later today! Promise! I want to get some links together for you.

An actual idea for OP!

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
It took me a bit, but I think I have a good idea for you. How about a South Russian Ovtcharka puppy (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/southrussianovtcharka.htm)? Read the description; America would be a perfect owner for one of these, and they're the closest thing to a dog breed of Belorussian origin that I can find.

America seems like the type that loves dogs, and look at the temperament. I could see Belarus stoically giving him the puppy without a word before walking away. It would have a ribbon around its neck and a note attached; "Can protect you. May be necessary one day." Maybe it's to guard him from Russia. Maybe it's to guard him from Belarus herself. Maybe Belarus just really likes a strong man with a cute cuddly puppy.

Re: An actual idea for OP!

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee~ yeah that sounds familiar. I'm just a sucker for cute animals. I like all the other ideas people suggested, too!

[identity profile] suppai.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
why can I picture her like trying to knit him a sweater but it comes out with three arms or something... idk XD

[identity profile] tearfulyandere.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it would have two arms.. it just probably wouldn't have a hole for his head!

[identity profile] choco-bani.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
*ignoring any fandom wank*

I think she should get him something dangerous. Like a new gun, or a finely crafted switchblade. I've read a few BelAmerica fics, and in one, though I cannot remember, I recall them talking about guns and dear god it was hot.

:D I hope it helps~

[identity profile] choco-bani.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
:0 I had it bookmarked on my computer, but that decided to have a dead today, and I can't find it anymore. :< It was a oneshot, and really well written too. //sob

[identity profile] choco-bani.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
>W> Ahaha, don't worry about it. But that fix is hot, isn't it? *U*

[identity profile] tearfulyandere.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
You know, with everything that went down, I completely forgot why I originally went to post in here...

Another idea for you if you like it...

Ukraine gave Ivan a scarf to show her love, I can totally see Natasha giving Alfred one of her hair bows as a show of affection and then holding him at knife point unless he agrees to wear it.

That... or depending on how obsessive you want Bela to be... I can also see her giving him a marriage certificate to sign (countries can totally marry more than one person... bigamy... what's that?).

[identity profile] yourwordspoetic.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have an idea for you, but I just want to say that I can't wait to see the picture.
