Fanfiction - Germany/Italy - Chocolate hearts

Author/Artist: Silvey
Character(s) or Pairing(s): Germany/Italy
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Italy wakes up alone.

Italy woke up late, and by that he meant it was late even for him. The other side of the bed was long since cold and all the pains Italy knew Germany went to every morning to straighten out the sheets before he left the bedroom had already been undone by his thrashing limbs. He could see the clock on Germany’s side table, it was after midday already.

After midday...

With a start he jumped up out of bed, upsetting the sheets even more in a mad rush out of the door and downstairs.

The house was quiet. Germany’s coat and the case he’d meticulously packed the night before were gone from by the door. Everything was neat and orderly and lined up just like Germany liked it and the various post-it-notes he’d watched Germany attach to things the night before were still all meticulously placed.

It wasn’t fair!

With a sigh he fell down to the floor in the hall. He knew he was pouting but, well, this really wasn’t any good. Germany...Germany was gone! It was going to be an entire month before they’d be able to be hone together again, Germany had so many meetings, and he’d promised he’d wake Italy up before he went, but apparently he hadn’t been serious.

Italy knew Germany saw him as an annoyance sometimes. Someone weak. And, of course, if he had been awake he would have clung to Germany and cried and begged him not to go...but Germany would have gone anyway because he was the sensible one. Italy had to try.

Now he didn’t get to try, Germany had already left. His flight had been at 11:42 so he’d be well out of the way by now. And Italy hadn’t even been able to say goodbye.

He hated not saying goodbye. It was that last bit of reassurance, a promise almost that they’d be together again. Not that everyone could keep it, but he believed in Germany. Why would Germany break his promise and leave him in bed?

Dejectedly Italy pulled himself to his feet, ignoring the tears in his eyes. He didn’t want to cry. Romano was right, Germany was stupid. Going of and leaving him behind. It was almost like Germany didn’t want to say goodbye to Italy.

He traipsed back to the bedroom and crawled back under the covers, feeling horribly sorry for himself. After a few seconds he reached over and grabbed Germany’s pillow, pulling it against his chest.

There was a note down the back of the pillow, and a chocolate. Italy wiped his eyes and sat up, looking at them curiously. They’d probably been on top of the pillow and he’d knocked them of in his sleep...probably.

He picked up the chocolate first. A cherry-liquor in the shape of a heart, he’d not seen any round the house so Germany must have bought it specially, it was one of their favourites. He peeled back the foil and bit into the treat, taking a moment to savour the bitter-sweet taste of the cherry and the chocolate, before reaching for the letter.

Dear Italy,

I am sorry that I didn’t wake you this morning, I just couldn’t bring myself to, please don’t hold it against me. If you had been awake there would be nothing you could say that we didn’t say last night. I’m afraid if I wake you that you’ll cry, and I really do need to go.

Remember, while I’m away follow the instructions I’ve left for you. Don’t eat only pasta and chocolate, you need some other foods too. Try not to upset anyone too much, I’m sure the month will be over soon and I’ll be back with you, I look forward to it.

My deepest regards,

Germany.

Italy smiled, folded the letter up and slipped it under his own pillow. He was still mad, of course, but it was just like Germany to do something like that. And he got it, he knew Germany got really upset when they said goodbye...he would forgive him this once. After all, he loved him.

Germany phoned at 9:50 that evening exactly, just as he’d said he would. Italy greeted his call with a smile and a big thank you for the chocolate.
