Thanks so much for this! Germany´s last name still intrigues me, though~

Australia
Roderich Edelstein

I've never seen him, tough.
But thank you so much for all the info <3 !

MAYBE GERMANY DOESN'T HAVE A LAST NAME BECAUSE HE'S HIDING FROM HIS WAR CRIMES. ....Wait, that's probably too realistic.

Kalpei -- what was the original Japanese for that? I always thought "Karpusi," since it's a legitimate Greek surname -- my interest is piqued. 8D

Heh, I think they meant to say 'Austria' :)

Lukaseiwicz? If it were Lukasiewicz, it'd be a real surname and on top of it, the surname of the guy who discovered kerosene and invented the kerosene lamp.

Well, "Zwingli" was a famous Swiss (Lead the reformation of the church in Zurich), so I guess there is, actually, a system behind the last names. =D Which just impresses me even more.

There was a list of the names mentioned in the comments here (http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/1045.html?thread=17173#t17173) but it's good to have a separate post for them I think. Didn't know about the ages or the heights, lol at China being immortal.

Not mine, just copy pasted from the link:
Northern Italy - Feliciano Vargas,
Southern Italy - Lovino Vargas ('Romano' is his 'country nickname', to seperate the north and south without hassle in canon. IIRC N-Italy's nickname is Veneziano. It stuck.)
France - Francis Bonnefoy,
Russia - Ivan Braginsky
Austria - Roderich Edelstein
Hungary - Elizabetha Héderváry
Spain - Antonio Fernandez Cariado
Switzerland - Vash Zwingli
Poland - Felix Łukasiewicz
Lithuania - Toris Lorinaitis
Latvia - Raivis Galante
Estonia - Eduard Fonvock
Korea - Im Yonsu?
Turkey - Sadiq Adnan
Greece - Heracles Karpusi
Sweden - Berwald...er, Oxsensshelna?
Finland - Tino Väinämöinen
Prussia - Gilbert Beilschmidt
Canada - Matthew Williams

Wiem :P But watching a Japanese person try to explain the difference between Ł an a Japanese "wa" sound can be painful.

Mind you, the most famous Polish Feliks I can think of is this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_Dzerzhinsky

Oh, double spiff, then. (no really, I'm impressed every time I see just how much research the author did).
I doubt "Vash" stands for anything Swiss, though. Unless it *is* actually supposed to be spellt "Vache", which would mean 'cow' in french. Which would crack me up. Muchly.
magaru: (tenipuri - ~<3)

[personal profile] magaru 2008-08-01 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
My guess is that author went on wiki, searched for people of particular nationalities and picked names that sounded nice, to avoid snowflake inaccurate names XD;

Well, after seeing this picture from here, I'm sure that they can learn, so there's nothing wrong with sticking to ł :D

Doesn't take away the magic!
And even only if it was just for the "why hello, someone else knows about the dude?"-reaction I had when I first saw the name. 8D

[identity profile] tomoe-daeva.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Lovino" sounds so stupid ;_; And "Valgas"?! It's not Italian D'x

*feels miserable*

--The other names sounds so awfully fitting, instead XD
*giggles at China's stats XD*

[identity profile] konkira.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
My completely baseless reasoning is thus: Vash from Trigun has a big gun. Switzerland likes guns. IT MUST BE FATE.

[identity profile] konkira.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
No problem, happy to help! :)

[identity profile] lemiru.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, cows are important to Switzerland! 8D
Perhaps it's a tribute to Trigun? Seeing how Switzerland always runs around with tons of guns and the like.

Vargas is a Spanish name, which isn't so bad given their close relationship with Spain in the comic but 'Lovino' is a head scratcher, he's mostly called Romano in the fandom though.

Complete stats (with character descriptions) are also included in the character profiles (http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/tag/profiles), in case you want to take a gander.^^/
