Discussion- Sports and Nations

Sorry if this type of thing has already been discussed.

Alright, we all know sports are very serious business, so which sports would be nation's favourite to play or/and watch? Like their top three? (Because I know a ton of Europe would just rate football/soccer as their favourite XD) You can have team and individual sports...

And if you want, what position would they play in? Like goal keeper or wing?

I saw a video where Red Bull hosted a mini skateboarding event in Sealand (http://www.redbullskateboarding.com/articles/2008/10/red-bull-access-all-areas-meet.php). I'd say he could be into that, but he was probably more interested in getting exposure and "street cred". (That, and a Canadian martial artist won several silver metals in Sealand's name at a Quebec tournament!)

He's probably already made Dambolis his national sport, though. 0=)

Canada is definitely hockey and so is Sweden and Finland and Russia if it's not soccer.

USA is baseball or American football but he likes any sport as long as America wins and he can lord it over the other countries.

[identity profile] iamelegentmess.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Lithuania - basketball

And yeah... I just imagine the nations getting together for a 'friendly' game of football (soccer) and it just going crazy.

[identity profile] swimmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually thought about this quiet a bit as well...

Soccer- Almost all the world loves this one. I don't see Asia, Canada, or America really getting into this sport though (See Colbert's def. of soccer)

Material Arts-Asia dominates. However, the different Asian nations each dominate at their own kinds of material arts (Japan at kendo, karate, SUMO WRESTLING!!!! XD korea at tai-kwan-do...etc)

Hockey-Canada. srsly?

Eating Contests: JAPAN.

Football: Only one nation really plays/understands it.

Ice skating-Russia dominates at this. Reason: THIS.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx-ualuq45E

Gymnastics: China's very good (Asia's overall pretty good at this)...I can see Eastern Europe doing well at this as well...America's up there too tho...

Baseball: America and Japan dominate. England and Australia and idk what other countries have cricket, which is similar to baseball, right?

Basketball: America, Russia, Easter Europe, Africa...China! oh, and I don't know how accurate this is, but for some reason, I see denmark having fun with this sport...

Track and Field: Sorry, Africa and Southern/Latin American dominates at this.

LaCrosse: ? I actually have no idea.

Swimming: America (No. 1 swimming nation in the world: Men's 4X100 Freestyle relay in Beijing. HECK YES) and Australia.

Ping pong: ASIA.

Tennis: Not sure for this one either.

And since I'm an ignorant American, I really don't know any other sports that Western Europe might really dominate at. England could win at archery, and France at fencing...

[identity profile] lai-choi-san.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
You're right about France. I think that fencing is the most popular sport here along with judo.

[identity profile] kiniski.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
LaCrosse is actually Canada's national sport, so I think Canada might be into it. :)

[identity profile] daihua.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
South Korea kicks ass at archery.
It's practically their national sport and they DOMINATE during the Olympics (all but 1 gold metal in archery went to Korea)
As for pingpong, 4000 year old Yao is basically unbeatable.

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Here is one for help!

Rugby!!!

it is a fun sport (and bloodthirsty) sometimes, it is played in most nations across the world and has a wide appeal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_football) and has been selected be one of the new sports played in the Summer Olympics 2016.

Most nations have their own leagues (RU which plays 15 on a team or Rugby Sevens, which plays Seven on a team) and its one of the sports that has been around in multiple forms for a couple of centuries. Modern Rugby was found in the late 19th century in United Kingdom.

[identity profile] swimmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
XD i forgot about that! but the only problem is that, beyond Australia and the UK, I don't know any other nation that plays it.....*fails*

and then when ppl try to describe it to me, they always compare it to football...and i hate football...so it kills any appeal for me to go watch it.*fails again*

altho once i saw a game of underwater rugby. it was hella intense. do you play?

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know that NZ, US, and most of Europe, Middle East and several Island nations have team but the ones you predominantly hear about are the Isle's teams (Ireland, Wales, Scotland, UK) and Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

I basically explain it like this "Its a non pussified version of american football because there is a sad lack of padding and physical excess is allowed and is kinda fun like football"

And yes I play, but not on any team or league or intramural, i just play with friends on either our beach or in one of our parks because its kinda more fun.

[identity profile] swimmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
XD yea...those are the only ones i kno..

so it is like football...? i really don't like that sport tho....i mean, it makes no sense, and it's just boring....unless your watching your school's football team fail on such a level it becomes EPIC (srsly, the whole season and ONE touchdown. FAIL) ehehe~u called football a "pussy" sport? i love you.

atill, it sounds kinda fun to play...so mebbe it's like basball? in that, it's AWESOME to play, but not so much to watch? idk...personally, my fav. team sports to watch are water polo and basketball...but maybe i'll start watching rugby...i have no idea where to tho..bbc?

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i called it a pussy sport because i believe it to be so but its the closest I get to seeing fighting in sports. and love you too!

Rugby is a full contact sport and even though as with football you need to get a score, its more entertaining and can keep your attention because, they play injured and in foul weather and the best thing about it is that you focus more on people killing each other than the scoring.

its fun to play and if you're into it very fun to watch. if you're living in the UK or anything like that, than you can find it on any sports channel, or if you are in the states, they sometimes have it on ESPN, ESPN2, PPV or Setanta Sports channel (its on DirectTV) and via internet streams as well.

[identity profile] swimmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
XD i swim, and i have a freind who has this one shirt that says: "Swimming: if it were easy, they'd call it football". he wore it to school one day, and yea....XD luckily, our swimming guys are in much better shape than our football players so we didn't get killed.

i suddenly get the image of one of those epic gatorade ads...rugby does sound kinda awesome...like water polo, but on land! :D if it involves killing ppl, i'm in!

yea...i live in america...the net's probably the best bet for me...i swear, half the time on ESPN they have poker or college basketball/football/etc...-3- HOW IS POKER A SPORT!?!?

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
here, awesome! Swimming, that is a sport I can enjoy and watch and not wanna rip out my hair.
poker is not a fucking sport, its a hobby/playtime recreational enjoyment.

this a youtube link to some hits and crashes of Rugby, just to check it out and see if you like it.,

[identity profile] swimmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
.....HOLY FUCK. DOES THAT SPORT NOT HAVE ANY RULES!?!? wao...i thought that half those ppl had broken their necks...THEY PICKED THEM UP AND THREW THEM ON THE GROUND AND ELBOWED THEM IN THE FACE AND SPUN THEM AROUND AND....WTF. yea. ok i agree with you. that is much better than football. They have more elaborate and painful ways of hurting each other than just tackling...wow. that's all i can say. that was fucking crazy. i mean wow. yeea...ehehe~do u kno that sports quote by Orwell? imma suddenly reminded of it when i watch this....

it was also better in that it didn't have all the bulky saftey gear...the players were much more flexible..ehehe~i love how my dad described rugby: "It's a very bloody and physical sport, but they still play like goddamn gentlemen"

suddenly, i am very scared of you. XD

thanks! swimming is awesome! and i kno...i hate poker...all my guyfriends are obsessed with it tho...

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
yes the sport does have strict set of roles, although there are several differences depending if your playing sevens or not.

You mean Orwell's "I loathed the game, and since I could see no pleasure or usefulness in it, it was very difficult for me to show courage at it. Football, it seemed to me, is not really played for the pleasure of kicking a ball about, but is a species of fighting." or Henry Bhala's "Rugby is a beastly game played by gentlemen; soccer is a gentlemen's game played by beasts; football is a beastly game played by beasts." or even the most famous said in rugby "He who sheds blood with me today, will be my brother forever"

aww, don't be, i only use my rugby skills in friendly games only, i am too chicken to every play in a league or intramural league even! I don't see the amusement in poker anyway, but Swimming is just fun to cheer.

[identity profile] swimmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
sevens...?

no, the "Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence. In other words, it is war minus the shooting." those videos srsly looked like some sort of war was going on....-3- i like the last quote tho~

XD ok....i kno. i mean, i've tried to play texas hold 'em and 21, but it's just boring...and watching it? thanks! swimming never gets any attention...i mean, our swim team finished second in state, and what do they talk about on the announcements? football. it's really frustrating, b/c if you're a good football player, you can get into any college in the US, for free...plus the schools spend all their mony on you...grrrr...i hate it. it's such an overrated sport... do they have rugby as a high school sport?

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
sevens is a smaller version of rugby, instead of 15 players on the field you play 7 men on the field.

Aww that is a good quote as well and definitely could be put to rugby, but yes some high schools have rugby as a high school sport, two high schools in my district have popular programs, traveling abroad for tournaments and such, but other schools have it and do colleges.

congrats on the finishing second though, and football dominates horribly, went to an all girl school so our dominating sport was basketball and softball so, i can't really say comment on the football thing, at least for the playing thing.

[identity profile] leriacossato.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I reckon Russia is actually a ballerina. Ding pirouettes when he thinks he's alone... trying on tight, pink spandex leotards...
YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT. >D

England would be all into archery, clay pigeon shooting, duelling and all that gentlemanly stuff, but secretly underneath he loves watching the rugby. Big manly men pushing and shoving and groping each other on the field. 8D

Does running around half naked count as a sport for France? XD

[identity profile] leriacossato.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
*DOING

LOL I FAIL AT SPELLING. THE IMAGE OF RUSSIA IN SPANDEX HAS WIPED MY MIND CLEAN OF MY KNOWLEDGE OF SPELLING.

DO WANT.

Does running around half naked count as a sport for France? XD

My best friend's bro is studying in Paris. In a fratwernity. All men. And he said this is definitely a national sportXD

[identity profile] sweetfragrance9.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really much into sports but I only know that Korea is Taekwondo, Japan is kendo, judo and many others, and Canada is absolutely Hockey. :D

For Sweden and Finland I think its:

1. ICEHOCKEYHOCKEYHOCKEYHOCKEY!

2. Football

3. Either athletics, or whatever they excell in right then. Like when Sweden had the ski athlete Stenmark, I'm sure he followed that very carefully and then maybe he switches to another sport when someone appeared who was very prominent there.

As for what they do, I'm sure there's a lot of outdoorsy things with Sealand, the simple "home baseball" that all kids play here, ice-skating and so on =)

In hockey, Finland would have an offensive position and Sweden would probably be a goalie.

For Germany, I think it is

1. Football
2. Motorsports (especially after Schumacher)
3. Is walking in the mountains considered a sport? It's definitely the recreational activity I could most easily see Germany do.
And of course, football with Italy

Although according to the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_in_Germany), the country totally dominates in bobsleigh and luge... Maybe Germany and Prussia have mad, death-defying luge races against each other XD

England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, N.Ireland, Australia, N. Zealand = RUGBY. Rugby and FOOTBALL.

England is no longer allowed to play cricket against Australia - always gets to competitive when he starts to lose and breaks the bat in anger.

America loves himself some baseball and football - he's just starting to get back into soccer.

Canada's all about the hockey - nobody messes with Canada and his hockey, not even Russia.

The Asians like their martial arts and really into baseball as well - and whenever they beat America, it's a huge deal and they raid the baseball field to steal home-plate as a victory trophy.

China is also good at any gynmnastics - Russia is also good at this, although he usually ends up having to give in because he's too "big boned".

France is good a figure skating - he probably could be good at hockey if it weren't for his fear of bruising his "delicate sensibilities" - that, and getting over the fact that Russia actually can keep up with him.

The Italy Brothers are great at any sports that require you to be fast, Germany likes football but only becomes a crazed fan anytime they play England (Prussia always roots for England just to piss Germany off - that's Prussia's sport, pissing people off and being the fastest person to ever run to a deli a mile away and back to their house before the commercial break was over).

But, I think Greece would be capable at all sports because *ahem* The Olympics and he would be the greatest if it weren't for his laziness and America being so damn good.

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
RUGBY! (I love it but we Americans just happen to suck at it)

Your summarization, I love it! but Americans seem to be decent at gymnastics but Chinese are better and Russians have scarier female gymnasts.

[identity profile] it-has-been.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
OMG! I love rugby too (Wales! Wales! Wales!) and I wish America was better at it, but alas - we are much too into the NFL (which I am not a fan of).

Wish they'd actually show rugby on television, at least - sucks having to watch it on the net some days.

[identity profile] hazel-belle.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I do wish Americans were better at it! And the fact that I cannot get Setanta Sports on my Direct TV is killing me but thank god for the internet though and being able to watch it you know.

As much as i love Wales and they are the number two team in my heart, with the All Blacks and Wallabies and the Springboks as 2,3,4 and 5 respectively, my heart belongs to ♥Rob Kearney♥ and the Irish because they are smoking hot and i saw them play

[identity profile] tallmoosyfate.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking of sports... Anyone else watched the World Hockey Juniors, in December? They were great. Switzerland kicked Russia out of the medal round. >=)

Oh, Austria was playing this year too, as was Latvia. Austria can't play hockey, and Latvia was a little demon on the ice. He only won against Austria though.

As for other sports. Canada plays curling in winter, when he's not playing hockey. And when he can't play those, it's lacrosse in the summer.

The Nordics and Russia play hockey as well. I'll agree with drcalvin, about Sweden being goalie. With that stare, and his high, plus the hockey equipment on, I bet it'd be hard to get a puck into his net. Russia would play center, I think, because he'd like to get into everything. Not sure about Finny though. I think he'd switch position depending on who he was playing.

[identity profile] jjblue1.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Italy = Calcio (football)

It's kind of the national sport. You either play it or are a fan of it and, even if you do neither (like me), in the end you can't help but follow at least the world cup.
Then come Cycle racing, Formula 1 & Basketball.
At least for the male side.

Girls instead favours Volleyball, Water Polo, Fencing...

Anyway other sports are also loved (skying, Motorcycle sport, Rhythmic gymnastics, Tennis, Skating, swimming, Track and field athletics) but the othermentioned are the top ones...
Oh, and another 'national sport' is following sport matches... ^_- but I don't know if this can count...

Not too sure how this would translate with the Hetalia characters, since they're boys but they're supposed to represent the whole Italy...

[identity profile] kerimaxwell.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason I see America secretly liking hockey and Canada secretly liking (American) football, mostly because there really are a lot of ice hockey teams in the States (like in Florida, omg wut) and Canada has it's own football league (with the uprights in a really dumb spot, what were you thinking, Mattie?).

As for the Europe, soccer is pretty much a given for everyone. I heard from someone that wrestling (as in the WWE goofy characters wrestling) is big with kids in Italy. I have no idea if this is true, but the mental image is hilarious.

[identity profile] rabbi-ata.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Already a lot of people said that, I'm just repeat it...Germany is for football (soccer)!!! 8D

And Austria is for wintersports, like skiing and ski jumping, etc.
Though, he also likes football, but he actually fails...but he doesn't want to face the truth 8'D
(He even lost against the Faroe Islands, since that he is scared of...them/him/her...whatever) XD

And Lithuania loves basketball :3

[identity profile] norels.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Canada = Hockey like every say =3= Live in Quebec, you'll understand the meaning of: hockey and Les canadadiens de Montreal.

Tenis, I don't remember wich country always win, wasn't there some Russian or american out there?

America: football, basketball and baseball, really XD
France: bicycle with his Tour de France XD or soccer too

I agree for F1 in germany though

I still wonder for Norway, is this really Hockey? Hmm

[identity profile] mikka26.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
For France it's football (sorry soccer) and after the most favorite(by licencied members):
2=Tennis
3=Equestrianism
4=Judo
5=Basket-ball

Rugby, handball, bicycle and pétanque(very popular in my place)are popular too.

I think Francis is attacking midfielder like Zinedine Zidane

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
For Spain, it's BASKETBALL, since we have a bazillion players in NBA and our own league is awesome (ACB)

-And football (soccer), with Real Madrid and Barcleona (the last one is considered the best team in the world at the moment).
-And tennis (Rafael Nadal, everyone?).
-And Formula 1 and any motor sports, where we always place 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
-And ciclism, we always rule there.
-And syncronized swimming, if that's even a sport LOL
-Oh, and sailing!
hey, we rule in sports nowadays ^^

And then, the regional sports, like Pelota Vasca and other weird shitXD

[identity profile] daihua.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
In China, Ping Pong and badminton is pretty much everyone's choice of sport. We also kick ass in gymnastics and diving, along with weightlifting (poor Yao, his back must hurt a lot)and shooting.
Though we enjoy soccer, we are probably Asia's worst soccer players. Even Google translator won't properly translate "I think China will win the World Cup' from Chinese into English. It comes out 'I think China WON'T win the World Cup.'
And another interesting fact, women is nearly ALWAYS better than men in team sports. Maybe that's why Yao isn't exactly male...

[identity profile] shantari.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweden - Hockey, but also Bandy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandy) which is also played on ice with sticks and a couple of goals. (Actually I'm pretty sure bandy ranks above hockey.) And well yeah, fotboll (soccer).

Finland - Biathlon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biathlon). (That's what it's called in English? Good thing I didn't go with my own translation of skishooting, you'd have looked at me funny.)

England - Fotball and cricket, gentleman's sports. (And rugby, but don't tell America, it might give him funny ideas.)

America - I find myself greatly educated with this swimming tidbit brought to my attention. I would have just said baseball, since growing up on American movies have given me the impression that's all you do besides hunting dinosaurs and killing nazis.
