I had no idea that Asterix was actually a Belgian cartoon until someone told me, and then I looked it up and found it to be true. And Tin-Tin, too! Have I never read a French comic book?! WOE!Okay, so I was actually correct and it is French and not really Belgian at all. Or something. *flails* I SUCK. But Tin-Tin is still Belgian and that shocks me


Shortly after this took place, a scene Most Definitely Not Suitable For Children occurred. If someone fics it, I will love them.
Some of you now have that Madeline song stuck in your head now, don't you.

And yes, as you can see, I like beating up on France. Oh, but France, it could be worse--you could be portrayed as a destitute immigrant, like what England did with Peru *cough*PADDINGTONBEAR*cough--or just imagine, you could have ended up like England envisioned by Japan:

That's right, folks--Though Hello Kitty is indeed a Japanese creation, she is CANONICALLY ENGLISHthough I think she's technically "from the UK", but I'm pretty sure that she was intended to be British because of Japan's fascination with English culture at the time she was conceived. You didn't know that? YOU KNOW IT NOW.

Where do you have the info from Asterix was Belgian? AFAIK it IS French... at least both creators where/are from France and the magazine where it was published first is French, too. Or did you mean Franco-Belgian? That would be something else...

Ahem. Right now it is not quiet clear to me, if you know what Franco-Belgian means - so if not: It simply means that a comic is from France or from Belgium. I looked up some pages and I can't find any info on Asterix being from Belgium. Well, I don't know where people got that from but I don't know anything about this, too. I still remember when Uderzo obtained the Max und Moritz Prize for his lifework at the Comicsalon in Erlangen 2004 (at that time I still lived in this city)....

...but this is Hetalia, ne?

Well, They both had/have French nationality. Uderzo does have Italian roots, And Goscinny had other roots as well, he also lived in America for quite a long time, since he was Jewish (so because of the second world war).

Asterix is so absolutely a French product, first published in Pilote, a French childrens magazine. But Uderzo and Goscinny were from the franco-belgian school, which was essentially a collection of authors who strived for more respect for comics. It was not-done to read comics in the early sixties, and they were also victim to censure, could not draw what they wanted, had a lot of constraints from publishers.

Uderzo, Goscinny and Hergé (from Tin Tin) certainly knew each other well, and I believe Goscinny worked with some belgian comic artists as well, so the line is pretty vague, but it is certainly a french comic (many the inside jokes in the French originals are referring to french culture and politics)

So maybe this is a geekish comment, but I'm from Belgium, and I adore Asterix. He is very popular in Belgium, and the last album even sorted a day earlier in Belgium than in France...which gave us time to inform them that Aliens had invaded the Asterix realm...:s
